Many places in the US have experienced the Ah-Aw Merger, tho I don't know which areas exactly. In the Pacific Northwest at least, we pronounce them identically. And beside that, the Japanese vowels are pronounced somewhat lazily, with little mouth movement, so AW is probably more accurate anyway.

Unless you just meant their AWs sounds weird even for what they are, which might be becuz the voice actors have a Texan accent. Try as they might, they can't always hide their twang.

So I was just thinking...since Baba says that "Uranai Baba" is merely a nickname, I think a great English adaptation of this would be "Granny Fortuneteller." Snappy and concise, no?

I was thinking her name could have been translated as "Udders", keeping with the cow theme of her father. However, I wonder if it would have been just as bad if not worse than bluntly calling her "Boobies"

Maybe something simple like 'Milk'

"Granny Fortuneteller" is grammatically fine.

Actually, what about Moobies? Moo+Boobies. Sounds cute but retains the boob pun and the cow pun. Also, Kuririn could have become Chester (retaining the chestnut pun), Chaozu could have become Dumplin, the Saiyans could have become Produshans (pun of Produce), with the Tsufuls as Truffles, Marron (Krillin's daughter, not the girlfriend from filler) could become Hazel, etc etc. So the names would be different, but the puns would be faithfully translated into something understandable in the English area.

I'd probably translate it as Fortunetelling Witch (Witch being an impolite word to refer to an old lady, and also fitting in with her getup.)

Would "Calci" work as a name for ChiChi? It's makes reference to the the milk pun without looking like something that would offend some over protective parent watching DBZ with their kid.

If I wanted to be really cheeky I'd go with Ti-Ti but that's probably pushing it for a children's cartoon :P

"Hag" might fit better than "witch," since Baba's not remotely evil, and you're relying on the negative connotation of a word to make sense with the name.

Don't we (and maybe Viz?) usually just go with "Fortuneteller Crone" as a translation?

I don't know if that name is ever specifically used by Viz, but I think "All-Seeing Crone" and "Uranai Baba" both are.

I love this review. It's certainly persuading me to convert some of my names to the Japanese ones. I hope you can find time to do more of these! :D

In regards to that conversation from August, I don't understand how "Go-hawn", "Yawm-cha", or "Shin-hawn" are incorrect. Are those not how they're pronounced in Japanese? :?:

"Go han"
"Ya muu cha"
"Ten sheen han"

Of course, you aren't enunciating it slowly as it's written. Read it as if you're fluent and the intended pronunciation is heard. It's important to note furigana usually guides the intended reading. That's how everyone knows whether to use Chinese or Japanese pronunciations or not.

"Titi" is actually how her name would be romanized in the Kunrei-shiki system of romanization. Hepburn "chi" is written as "ti."

I desperately want Krillin to become "Chester" now.
