There was a Pilot?

Post by DB1984 » Fri Sep 16, 2016 3:08 pm

And I'm not talking about the first five edited episodes of the Harmony Gold dub from 1989, or the 1995 dub of DB Movie 1. I've heard a couple of mentions of there being a Pilot for the original Japanese version of the show. If there was a Pilot, what could it have been about?

I'm thinking it may have been something of a short Presentation Reel, with a brief introduction of the characters and a brief description of the plot outline, not a full-length episode, which is what most Pilots are typically.

This early promo for the show (video below) featured clips that do not appear anywhere during the series. Could they be from this so-called "Pilot"?

I can't say I've heard of such a thing, but it's not unheard of for commercials to have original animation which isn't actually from the show itself.

And here I was thinking the title of the thread was referring to the plane Nappa blew up.

I think that clip may be an ad/nep from the end of Dr. Slump, and I guess you could consider "Dragon Boy" a pilot.

I have seen Kei17 mention a "Pilot" a few times, and I have to wonder if this was what he was referring to. I know it's hard to get a hold of him right now, though.
