I believe it's because the spelling with ie was made up by Funimation even though the ee spelling had already been used before in fandom (such as on merchandise, etc).

Because Freeza is a pun on the word Freezer, just like Coola is a pun on the word Cooler. Frieza looks like it's a pun on french fries.

Again, (IMO) either spelling should be correct since they both refer to the same thing and are pronounced the same. However, I got the pun correctly from the I-E spelling (that it's a pun on "Freezer" like his family, King Cold and Cooler). I mean, if F-R-I-E-Z-A were a pun on French fries, wouldn't it have been pronounced "FRY-zuh"?

I get the vibe from Mike that he freaks out (or is it "frieks" out) when he sees it spelled with an I-E, even on a Japanese game. Didn't Jump Ultimate Stars spell it with an I-E? I distinctly remember Mike briefly bemoaning the I-E spelling on the Jump Ultimate Stars review episode....

He did, he just didn't complain too much about it. The reason I hate the Frieza spelling is because Freeza works just fine, so why spell it Frieza?

I was refering to the human characters rather than the Pokemon themselves, the anime only human characters.

That's a very good point. But in this case, I think it's common sense to spell it Freeza in order to make the pun more visible. The Dragon Ball terminology is filled with puns & for some reason FUNi has a nab of shying away from it by either butchering the spelling of changing the name so it's not there anyone, like in Kuririn's (Krillin) case.

Oh, ok. Thought you were referring more to guys like Misty and Brock, or the Pokemon who had English word names in Japanese that would've been kind of corny in the English version.

Eh, FUNimation isn't the best at pronounciation. Look at their flubs with "Kamehameha" and "Kaioken" for further information.

Eh, I taught myself to keep saying "Saiyajin" and now I kinda regret it because it's...well, wrong in my book. Unless you wanna run around saying "Namekseijin" and so forth.

Still, I'd just go with "Saiyan" pronounced properly (SIGH-an). Thankfully, I've brought others into the series who've picked this up quickly. It's kinda refreshing

My deranged theory is that they wanted it too seem like a really badass move say its pronounced as "K.O.-ken", like a knockout.
As corny as it sounds, its possible…I'm too used to saying saiyan as "say-in", but that isn't as bad, I think..

To (try, at least to) get off of the topic of spelling, here's a couple more show comments:

-- I love episodes that delve into the fandom aspect. The discussions are a lot more free-form and relateable, like the fandom discussion back in October. I've listened to this week's episode several times already, whereas usually I listen to an episode once or twice if it wasn't too memorable.... but this week was very much fun.

-- Isn't that chip-tune arrangement of "Romantic Ageru Yo" the cutest thing ever? All together now: Awwwww!

I use the japanese names for the pkmn characters (Satoshi, Kasumi, Takeshi, Kenji, Shigeru, etc) but it's been many, MANY years since I've left that fandom so it never comes up anymore. '_';;

Ah, comments on YouTube are usually brutal no matter what's been posted. I generally avoid reading people's comments (which usually degenerate into arguements inside the comments section o_O ) on that site altogether.

I have to admit that I still say "Saiyan". I know the correct term is "Saiya-jin" but thats not what I grew up hearing. Even now when I watch only the Japanese version and refuse to watch the dub, I say and think "Saiyan" because thats what I grew up hearing. It just rolls off the english tongue better. I could try to start saying "Saiya-jin" but I'de feel like someone thats trying to be all "High and Mighty" as Meri said.

I agree that Funimation didn't have a hard time trying to Americanize Dragonball since there's barely any Japanese culture in the show compared to other animes. I didn't even know DB was originally japanese until after the Cell Saga!(Wow I just realized thats a really long time). I didn't even know what anime was. The first DBZ DVD I ever bought was movie 7 and on the cover it said "Includes Edited English Version Only!" I was really confused as to what that meant, (I didnt know what edited meant nor did I give it much thought) but it was in an "exploding" bubble so I thought that was the best version.

I went to my friends house who had the same movie. I looked at it and it said it had 2 versions, original japanese and english. I was like "What!?!?" I did some research online and thus, a new Anime fan was born...

I first saw the dubbed version of DBZ, but I would never get upset at someone just because they use the Japanese names/terms & not the ones from the dub. But if there is anything I know about the internet, it's that there are always plenty of people who can't do anything but complain. Also, I do think that Goku sounds odd in the sub, but I still can watch the subbed version. It doesn't bother me enough to avoid the original version.

People in the US seem to often think that "ai" at the end of something makes a sound like "Gay", "Pay" etc. while "ei" at the end of something makes a sound like the letter "I". For the Japanese, as well as several other languages, it's the opposite.

Geez... I mean I'm a Canadian and even I think you should cut your own country, the U.S. of A some slack. I understand that proper pronounciation is important but you cannot expect people to prnounce another language's words right off the bat.

Then again.... yeah FUNI should have known better.

Still I have been saying the word "Saiyan" wrong this entire time!

It's not like they're complex words. Break the word "saiyan" down.
"Sai", I've been pronouncing that word since I was little because it's the weapon of Raphael from Ninja Turtles. So we can say “Sai“. and I know we can all say "yin" as in Yin-Yang. Sai...yin. put those together and we have a pretty simple "proper" translation of Saiya-jin.
Then of course Kaioken. We can say “Kai” because we say “King Kai“. So there's no excuse for saying “Kayoken“.
So remember. Sai-yin, not say-in. Know what I’m sayin‘?

I'm not an English or grammar teacher so pardon me if that doesn't sound all professional and such. I'm just trying to get a point across.

That's the one that always amused me the most. I mean, it's almost as if the early translators and directors just completely missed the obvious correlation between "King Kai" and "Kaio-Ken".

In version 1.0 of my DBZ RPG (which is in a completely screwy format and was abandoned after I put in pretty much all of the stories), if you set the language to Japanese, various character names would change, along with the word "Saiyan" in English being "Saiya-jin" in the Japanese. But what really made me decide to mention that isn't the change so much as the fact that the variable I use to keep track of the word is "sai".
Ur... yeah. The sai/kai explanation is the awesome. XD.

And let's see what Jaws says about different spellings...

Saiya-jin=Sai ya dash jin (Because I have it set to read - aloud... but that doesn't bother me.).
Saiyan=Say yin. Only the emphasis is on the 'saiy', just like the funi pronunciation. The iy tends to make a somewhat longer 'y' sound in the middle, but it's typically ignorable. Ignorible? Meh.
Kaioken=k-uh-k'n. Jaws has this bad habbit of saying words that end in <consonant><vowel><n, r and sometimes t> with a schwa. So Goten, gotan and Goton all sound the same. At least, they did until I got tired of not being able to tell Goten and Goton apart while reading fanfics and added a dictionary entry. The same applies to Gohan, though it's harder to notice.
Freeza=Pronounced right.
Fr'ieza=Hee, it's got two long "ee" sounds. So it basically says free-ee-zuh.
Interestingly, words like "Goku" and "T'ien" were pronounced wrong in older versions (pre-4.0) (Gahckyoo and Teen), but now are pronounced in the funi way (Go-koo and Tyen... Ur... except neither of my attempts at getting T'ien past the filter are pronounced the same... XD).
Another thing of interest... the Daizex spelling of Chiao-tzu is pronounced right, while the other common Chaozu is pronounced "Chay-o-zoo".
Actually I'm having too much fun with this to stop.

Vegeta=Actually, this was pronounced right in versions of Jaws prior to 5.0, but now it says "vuh-jeh-ta". Vegita is always pronounced right. Same goes for Vegeto and Vegito.
Gotenks=Gaht-'nks. Somehow I'm too used to that one (maybe because of a certain member of a certain forum with 19,108 posts...).
Buu=Byoo-oo. For some reason that's fun.
Kamehameha=Kuh-meh-huh-mee-huh. I don't know... it seems ok to me.

And I tried to do a fandub of Toyble's DBAF fanmanga, and tried to use the 'sai-yan' pronunciation... For some reason that's much harder than either Say-yin or Saiya-jin.

*considers taking clips from podcasts (especially ep.70) and setting them as the windows sounds*
