Pretty sure that most Germans only say that because they think certain English lines are true. Like you say, there is some subjectivity involved when judging a dub. Everyone has their own opinion about them. I'm a bit mixed on the German one though.
Even those more "freely" translated things or really changed things in German are very often made to be fitting for the character. As said, much is summarized, sometimes unfortunately some things are left out a bit but overall with two so skilled translators as Mr. and Mrs. Seebeck, with one of them being a Japanese native speaker, we really can be glad (not that GT was translated by them, I don't think so - it was just another example for how people might rate things). I do agree though that Germany was not strict enough with certain Battle of Gods lines. When it comes to the quality of how the voice actors do their work - that one is fantastic, I must say.
