A re-release for the Dragon Ball manga
If anyone keeps up to date with Kanzenshuu news, they post about the Dragon Ball: Digest Edition, published in the same format as it was back in Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan from the 1980s-90s. It would be awesome if we could have something like that in the US, a re-release of the Dragon Ball manga (like what Viz is doing now with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) with the original color pages, completely uncut, high quality paper, and best of all, a hardcover with a dust jacket. Almost like a deluxe version of the VIZBIG printings, but unedited. So, what do you think?

There's no need, yes Viz made mistakes but its not significant enough to make the vast majority of Dragon Ball fans many of which have bought the manga more than once.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

No, I'd say it's necessary. Their last completed release advertised keeping the pages uncensored and they failed to do so. I'm not content with mistakes, but that's my personal standards. Limited as they were, if the Dragon Box release can happen once in a lifetime, a release for a completely uncensored manga run with Weekly Shonen Jump marks should be okay. For the thread proper, it's a wonderful idea, but I don't see it happening in the future, or ever. The "definite" releases for Viz's Dragon Ball publication occurred twice, with the second run ending recently. I doubt they'll make another special edition, especially when they've hardly updated from their old transcriptions. There's the color manga to consider, too. They were convinced to bring it back to North America and they wouldn't want anything interfering with that, competing with their own work. Frankly, it would be miraculous if anything changed the status quo.

Yup, in the 3-in-1s (the ones with the really thin paper) that were recently released, they were advertised as being uncensored, but when I read one page with Mr. Popo, his lips were thinner. The only way to truly see what else Viz censored is to buy the Japanese editions and compare.Nejishiki wrote:No, I'd say it's necessary. Re: A re-release for the Dragon Ball manga
I'm fine with the mildly censored Viz version. The translations can be awkward, but they aren't technically bad. The censorship and re-drawings usually aren't jarring, it's relatively cheap to buy the whole series. I see no reason for a re-release, and I certainly won't buy the whole manga again.

Re: A re-release for the Dragon Ball manga
After all this time and so many releases, another Dragon Ball re-release from Viz would have to be damned near perfect for me to re-collect the whole thing and replace my VizBigs. I'm talking Kanzenban-quality printing with ALL the color pages this time, some translation and name revisions, unedited artwork, and so forth... which is almost certainly impossible at this point.
I would be collecting the full-color volumes if I had the income for it, but that would be more as a novelty on the side.

Re: A re-release for the Dragon Ball manga
I've never been a fan of the full color manga, it takes away the impact of the pencil shading and unessecarily adds detail to backgrounds that were supposed to be vague. I'm absolutely fine with the VIZBIGs.Kaboom wrote:I would be collecting the full-color volumes if I had the income for it, but that would be more as a novelty on the side.

Re: A re-release for the Dragon Ball manga
Oh, you americans are happy. Here, in Brazil, we have only the regular tanko, besides the "half-tanko" (a format that publishers used to use here, when the media came to the country). I'm always in Panini's Facebook page, asking for the kanzenban or the full color edition. I think I'm going to import someday, 'cause they don't seem to have any plan to bring it. The problem is that our economy sucks, so the Dollar is very expensive :'D
Sorry for bad english. I'm not fluent in your language, so, if you want to correct some mistake of mine, please do it. I'll be grateful
Re: A re-release for the Dragon Ball manga
As some others have said, the next Dragon Ball release by Viz would have to be nearly perfect in all aspects to get me to purchase it once again. Unedited artwork including speech bubbles and SFX, no visual censorship whatsoever, includes all of the color pages, and a heavily touched up translation.
At this point I don't see that happening, so I don't even bother getting my hopes up. Viz has made it clear time and time again that the releases they want to put out will (probably) never coincide with what I consider to be a "perfect" release, and that's fine. I'm aware of the changes they've made well enough that I can get by with their old releases.
