Dragon Ball Super toys to hit US retail summer 2017

License Mag:
Toei Animation has tapped licensee Bandai to launch a new toy line inspired by its animated series “Dragon Ball Super.”

The new range will include a host of 3.5-inch, 6.5-inch and 7-inch action figures, collectible sets and role play items including the Deluxe Scouter and Deluxe Kamehameha Shooter.

“Bandai’s creative ambition is at full force with the release of their exciting ‘Dragon Ball Super’ catalogue,” says Masayuki Endo, president, Toei Animation. “The toys recognized the ‘Dragon Ball’ franchise’s long history and appeal to a wide variety of audiences and we look forward to aggressively building out the licensing component of this franchise.”

“Dragon Ball Super” reunites the franchise’s characters and follows the aftermath of Goku’s battle with Majin Buu as he attempts to maintain Earth’s fragile peace.

Bandai’s new toy line is slated to launch in the U.S. in summer 2017.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Yeah it's infuriating that they have the cheek to announce a toy line before the show. But hey ho no toyline without a show but I guess this all confirms we'll have Super summer 17 or before.

Also they don't look good at all... Obviously not the target audience but still can't see may children being excited by these...

I completely agree. They look terrible, but I think these may be the 3.5in ones (I hope lol) if not, then these just aren't going to do particularly well.

I'd rather have some of the cooler products I've seen in photos in Japan (or some of the silly ones like the sausages). I agree these look low quality.

So Super dub in summer 17? Two years behind...wild in this day and age.

I don't really watch the dub anymore, but hopefully part of this deal is official subs like they do an hour later with One Piece.
On hiatus.

Woof. Those toys looks awful. Those toys look like the kind of shit you would see in a happy meal from a McDonals in Vietnam. And announcing a toyline before announcing the show that the toyline represents? Total. Horse. Shite.

God awful toys to show off for this big announcement but this is great news. I had always assumed it be next year given the Manga release happening in the spring. I'm sure come the next two months we will get the big announcement for it. I just hope its on a good network and at a good time too.

So I guess this is a good sign we won't have to wait till Kai finishes for the Super dub to start? I sure hope we'll get that announcement soon, with the manga getting an English release, now this toyline and possibly the dub 2017 could be the year Super takes off (hopefully with a bang) in the western world.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Two years is not bad seeing it allows Funimation to produced a good dub without rushing it to catch up with Japan. Not to mention America has been known to behind with Dragon Ball. Two years is nothing compare to 7-11 years that we had with the old DBZ movies and GT.

If Super is getting a toyline that are toys for kids to play with, there is a good chance that a kids network pick it up. Kai didn't even have a toyline and it was pretty successful on Nick Toons (But not on the same level as DBZ was on Toonami in 1998-2003). I guess we will probably get a uncut home video releases too, but I feel like we are going to get another "I hate how they edit out all of the blood and cruising" again from the older fans.

So far Super hasn't had too much blood...it seems like it took a few dozen episodes to see any at all! Though I feel like the current arc has been a bit more graphic than the previous ones...whether they tone down the violence or not would probably depend on which network/time slot it airs in. And we'd have to wait and see if we get any instances in Super of infamous edits like Blue Popo  What would even warrant that in the already toned down Super, I have no clue...

And I'm sure Funimation will do like they did with Kai and have altered scripts between the TV and home release versions, allowing light swearing in the latter. Maybe the airing schedule will even repeat what happened with Kai, with the edited version airing on a kid's network first, and the unedited version airing at a later date on Adult Swim (if they go through airing all of Boo Kai before taking on Super, a much later date!)

Wow, they look worse than those crappy Irwin figures they sold back when I was a kid.

Looks aside, this may be is a necessary move for Toei to get the show broadcast on kids TV. Merch seems to be a prerequisite for kids anime getting a place on television these days, unless we're talking Toonami.

I guess this might also a good indicator that Super is coming to US shores next year.

Yeah they look like mini figurats and each one comes with a piece of Shenron to make you complete the set! Pretty clever strategy believe the old Z toys done the same too.

Wow, looks like they've got quite a lineup planned, with items for both kids to play with and adults to collect. Certainly they're planning to capture both the kids seeing any Dragon Ball for the first time, plus older fans who grew up watching the show.

This description made me laugh:
With “powering up” action, kids will be able to recreate some of Dragon Ball’s most intense scenes as their favorite characters burst into super battle form by blasting off their shirt or armor.
I have a feeling more people besides just kids will get a kick out of making the characters explode out of their clothes

Dodged a bullet there. If any Beerus figure, somehow or someway, come to the UK, I would buy those in a heartbeat. But we Brits don't get shit.

So basically Goku and Vegeta in 4 different sizes.

They should have the characters that they are selling in all sizes eventually as if they don't then the sales for these won't last long.
