I've never heard of Lychee in my life. I've only heard of Raichi.

Raichi is the Japanese word for lychee.fadeddreams5 wrote:I've never heard of Lychee in my life. I've only heard of Raichi.
Didn't the RB2 sub say Lychee?

It's too on the nose. It would be like calling Vegeta "Vegetable".Bansho64 wrote:How? I'm still not seeing what's wrong with it.Sailor Haumea wrote: Because it's making the pun too obvious...?

The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Whether you think it sounds fine, it is on the nose. Why not call Kakorotto "Carrot"?Bansho64 wrote:How though? Sounds perfectly fine to me.ABED wrote: It's too on the nose.

You say that like it's a known fact. And I don't see the similarity between calling Kakarotto "Carrot" and the current case at hand.ABED wrote:Whether you think it sounds fine, it is on the nose. Why not call Kakorotto "Carrot"?

It is a fact. That's not a knock but call a spade a spade. Naming the Saiyans "Vegetable", "Carrot", or "Radish" would be on the nose because there's no subtlety. That would simply be naming characters after Vegetables and doing nothing more. Saiya-jin is an anagram, so it's less on the nose.Bansho64 wrote:You say that like it's a known fact. I'm not sure what to tell you if you can't see the similarity of naming Kakarotto "Carrot" and calling Bulma "Blooma" in order to get closer to Bloomers.

Fine, sure. I still don't see the problem with it. We aren't calling her straight up "Bloomers", just Blooma. Like I said before, there ain't a thing wrong with it in my book.ABED wrote: It is a fact. That's not a knock but call a spade a spade. Re: Things that grind your gears
It's a matter of taste, but I'd rather things not be so on the nose when naming characters after food or undergarments. It's a tad too silly, especially if you ever try to give a character any sort of gravitas. The Ginyu Special Corps. are named after food, but I'd rather them be named Reacoom, Jeice, and Bahta than Cream, Cheese, and Butter.

Re: Things that grind your gears
The "Blooma" and "Bluma" transcriptions are fine to use. They both reflect how her name would be written in English, too (ブルマ). "Bulma" neglects to reference anything, be it in pronunciation or pun retention. "Bloomers", I'd hesitate assigning validation, seeing as that isn't the real source. Her name is based on the source spelling. Subtlety cannot exist without reference. Where did you receive the notion that official name puns weren't faithful? I've never witnessed TheDevilsCorpse refer to Artificial Humans as "Jinzo-ningen". However, even if he did, it's not appropriate to indirectly attack other members. We're capable of understanding who everyone is referring to here. The context is normally present and that's why all of us can interchange terms among each other. Chances are that nobody will change their habits and that we have a grasp on how the names work if we're here, so it's fruitless to preach. Let's focus our ki on the heart of the conversation instead of condemning each other (spoken in a general sense).
It's a valid spelling alongside "Litchi". I suspect the nature of "L" and "R" being interchangeable led to conflicting accounts. They're both pronounced similarly (ライチ) and reference the name pun. The idea that they're somehow different from each other is baseless, to be frank.fadeddreams5 wrote:I've never heard of Lychee in my life. I've only heard of Raichi.
You wouldn't translate them with those names in the first place. With the exception of Butta, their Japanese characters are not the source words. You wouldn't read the manga in its original language and get "Cow Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese" directly. It would roughly become Ginyu, Ghurd, and Jheese in English. The exception, Butta, lies within a strange realm where you could get away with leaving it as-is. It reflects the tone of a twisted proper noun for us, unlike its original counterpart which doesn't attempt to hide the source.ABED wrote:It's a matter of taste, but I'd rather things not be so on the nose when naming characters after food or undergarments. Oh, I wasn't being rude to TheDevilsCorpse.
I was merely pointing out a case of someone using it. Nothing more.

Some people think of it as racist, which is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who's offended by calling something or someone Black goes straight on my block list.Kitten Anime wrote:It's called a preference. I used to use it. My brother uses it (well, he just says "Black" now). Why is it so wrong?ManMajin wrote:"Black Goku."
I would have thought that people who have the ability to go on the internet could read. I like to imagine them reading Goku Black somewhere and for some unexplainable reason, their brain processes it as "Black Goku." Come on people.
As for me, it's just annoying. I don't call you Kitten Anime, you don't call me MULE Jinzoningen, it doesn't make any sense.

I don't like it when people refer to the horrid Orange Brick colors as the "90s colors".

Re: Things that grind your gears
Are you specifically referring to the people who re-color DBS shots to look like the Orange Bricks? With those, what annoys me more is the people who don't know any better who "ooh" and "ahh" just because it looks older.Bansho64 wrote:I don't like it when people refer to the horrid Orange Brick colors as the "90s colors".

It's equivalent to Freeza.ABED wrote:It's too on the nose. It would be like calling Vegeta "Vegetable".Bansho64 wrote:How? I'm still not seeing what's wrong with it.Sailor Haumea wrote: Because it's making the pun too obvious...?
Bloomers - Blooma
Freezer - Freeza
You say Blooma is too on the nose, but I say Bulma is too obscure.

At least Freeza isn't silly. I put it up there with Mr. Freeze. Bulma may be obscure, but I prefer that to something as blatant as Bra.You say Blooma is too on the nose, but I say Bulma is too obscure.
