Was Broly really evil?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Was Broly really evil?

Post by Sailor Haumea » Sat Oct 15, 2016 12:29 pm

I recently noticed that the only person Broly killed of his own free will in Movie 8 was Paragus.

Everyone else that he killed was a victim during Paragus's control of Broly. Throughout it all, Broly didn't have a say in the matter. Paragus was the one manipulating him, forcing him to kill.

So was Broly actually evil? It reminds me of 17 and 18 killing Gero. Gero was a despicable person who abducted teenagers to make them into cyborgs, and built, or left mechanisms in place to build, 9 androids/cyborgs designed to kill Goku. The only person 17 and 18 killed was Gero.

In my opinion, on his own, Broly wasn't evil.

What do you think?

Yes. He killed his father, destroyed a planet, and attempted to kill the Z-Fighters without ceasing.

All due to him being the Legendary Super Saiyan of the modern era.

And he is sane enough to recognise him.

Though the power did something to his brain...

King Vegeta ordering his death and Frieza blowing up Planet Vegeta was what really drove Broly into insanity.

When I rewatched the movie, this is what I got.

Broly would rage uncontrollable and would be difficult to 'control'.

There is one scene where Broly wakes up and casually talks his dad as if they have almost normal relationship.

So I think it's really the power Broly that drove him to insanity.

While that might be true to an extent, you have to recall that Broly as an infant had been forced to watch and witness himself being almost murdered by both a fellow Saiyan and when Frieza had launched his Supernova to destroy Planet Vegeta.

I don't think he would remember that far back as an infant other than the cries of Kakarot that embedded in his brain which soon triggered his Saiyajin instincts to fight him when they meet.

Though that's my interpretation of the movie.

He acts normal and restrained when Paragus uses his device but then runs totally amuck when breaking it's influence, getting incredibly angry and then sadistically choosing targets to torture and then kill.
The best case you could make for Broly is that he is too psychotic to know better thus he wouldn't count as evil...however he does resent his father for putting him under control and then breaks from hurting the Z-Senshi just to go kill his father, this indicates to me that he is consciously aware enough of his actions to follow up on his desires while under control so I would say he is evil to an extent.

Oh he was definitely evil. It seems the reason why Paragus felt the need to stick a mind-control device on his son was because he was so chaotically violent and would've killed him otherwise. Broli's basically the Saiyan version of Pure Boo.
