Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
Let's be honest many people hated and thought that the retellings were completely pointless, at that time many people said how they felt as if DBS does not look or feel as a successor to Z. Then U6 arc happened which many people thought it was okay at best:
-Horrible underdeveloped characters
-Vegeta and Goku pretty much did everything
- Why was Champa looking for the Super dragon balls in the first place?
- Animation was meh until the last fight
- fake tension throughout until the Hit fight.
- No stakes
- the 5 vs 5 idea was not explored Majin Buu falling asleep wtf?
So at the end of the day until now, there has been but one good arc. So my question is , is the existence of Super justifiable?

It's still too early to say that. If next arc is good too, then yes, DBS existence would be justifiable in my opinion

Well lets concider shall we....
I've enjoyed Super for the most part. The Beerus arc was in some ways better then its movie counter part, the Frieza arc was a bit of a let down but it was fun to see Ginyu again, the Champa arc was a fun little tournament arc with some cool throw away characters (all the others have had) and cool one's who will hopefully come back and finally the Goku Black arc as been really good all round.
So in my opinion yes there is.

Re: Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
Well yeah, u6 was enjoyable and it has it moments but at the end of the day those the plot was really weak... it just did not justify 27/28 weeks of waiting
Re: Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
I think it's existence is justifiable. Atleast, the Black arc us. For me, it's mainly because of these two points.
1. Toyotaro
Super's manga has given Toyotaro a platform. He's developing his art style and becoming a better story teller. It's nice to see his artwork sometimes and it's cool to have a younger apprentice for Toriyama.
2. The Happiness Of The Fans.
While I may not like Super, specifically the anime version, it's amazing to see people who do. Seeing people my age
and older enjoying the series, makes me happy.

Is the existence of Super justifiable ?
We didn't need the 1st 27 episodes, the Champa arc was short enough to be a movie and the filler arc was just that, filler.
The current story is the only one that feels like it needs episodes so its ending will determine weathr or not it was worth stitting through 46 episodes to get to it and weather or not it was worth getting a new series for it.

July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

I appreciate character moments, and seeing my old ship get some fuel (and it's actually a subdivision of a bigger ship which makes it all the more impressive these things happened). I enjoyed finally getting a modern-style battle animated back in ep 56 after being jealous of the cool battle animation last year's Toei's Go!Pri had.
I dunno, I'm having fun watching week to week. Rarely do I hit an ep where I'm truly bored.

Universe 6 arc to me is not serious to take it was more a building up for the future with Characters like Hit & Cabba etc...The Trunks arc is great so far and Super will not end
soon becuase of the Dragonball department there is more going on after the trunks Arc possible over 200 episodes....So if the next arc's will be good as the trunks arc
than is great let's wait and see...

It's making money and many fans are enjoying it.
Sounds justifiable to me.

Justifiable.
- It's making money.
- Opened the minds of a lot of people that hadn't watch the japanese version, and complained about everything subbed.
It did at least two great things for this franchise, as far I'm concerned.

To stablish continuity in the plot these episodes were needed. From an anime Perspective you would be loss if they jumped directly to Beerus, Whis, SSGod, God of Destruction and more without first getting an explanation.sintzu wrote:Is the existence of Super justifiable ?

Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Re: Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
I don't like it, but of course its existence is justifiable. From a business perspective, it's doing well. It's doing well in ratings. And have you seen the views the youtube clips get? Several in the millions. The series hasn't even been released internationally yet.
Sure, the series may be half-assed and a piss poor sequel with so, so much to be desired, but it's an official sequel to DBZ, and the familiarity with the characters is enough for some fans. Not to mention, Toriyama's involvement seems to attract certain fans who hate GT just cause it's "non-canon". Lastly, it's not a terrible show. It's average/okay on its own. Pretty fun if you don't compare it to its predecessor or try to make logic of its contradictions.

"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

Is it making a lot money and generating interesting in the product worldwide? Yes. So of course the existence of Super is justifiable.

It's justifiable from a financial point of view but what about an artistic point ? I think the question is, what has Super done for DB artistically ? is Dragon Ball's reputation among fans and anime viewers getting better or worse thanks to Super ? is Super improving or making the lore worse with its stories ?Yomi wrote:Toei move units, they make money. To me, DB wouldn't be complete without BOG, I feel like that movie is just as important to the DB franchise as the manga but the next 2 stories ? I'm happy they're here but I wouldn't lose any sleep if they were taken away.
Bringing back Freeza and introducing an alternate universe Freeza was a great financial idea but it hurt the character artistically.
They could've just shown the movies before starting with the Champa arc.Neo-Makaiōshin wrote:To stablish continuity in the plot these episodes were needed.

Re: Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
The movies needed fixing. The fight between Goku and Beerus in the movie was lame and short. The one in Super was a breath of fresh air. And the ssg transformation was way better. Plus ssj3 goku vs Beerus was better in super.sintzu wrote:Lord Beerus wrote:Is it making a lot money and generating interesting in the product worldwide? Yes. And ROF, well they fixed the laser thing, extended the z fighters fight, explained how Freeza and Tagoma got so strong, and ep 27 was just amazing. Plus those slice of life ep.
Re: Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
The movie adaptations are so concerned about viewers understanding the story without seeing the films that they leave out an explanation for the Pilaf gang and assume viewers have seen the films.Neo-Makaiōshin wrote:To stablish continuity in the plot these episodes were needed. It's really quite brilliant.

Super is making decent amount of money, so yes it's justifiable. As long as it makes profit keep milking the cow
Toyotarō: … I get the feeling I’ve just heard something amazing (laughs). Lord Beerus and Whis turn up in Dragon Ball Super, and have become an unsurpassable wall for Goku and the gang. What do the two of them mean to you?
Toriyama: Well… First off, right now I don’t have any plans for Goku and Vegeta to surpass Beerus and Whis.

Re: Existence of Super and pleasing the fanbase
It's making money and that's what it was created for in the first place. The merchandise sales from what I've heard are better than ever. So, mission accomplished.
Now from storytelling standpoint, yes the retellings were kind of pointless, but I can understand why they went for that approach.
The Universe 6 stuff was an average plot but thoroughly enjoyable and that's what matters. The animation improved and so did the direction, especially from the Vegeta Cabba fight to the final fight. #38 in particular by Tate Naoki was fantastic from start to finish. It was quite an accomplishment considering how bad the schedule was.
Now the Gokuu Black arc is already an above average arc. Most of the arcs in the original series were average or above average, with the only exceptions being the RRA and Saiyan arcs which were very good. As far as I am concerned the Gokuu Black stuff is already better than the trash Cell and messy Majin Boo arc in the writing department.
The animation has been good for the most part with #47 and #57 being really good quality animated eps. Scenario writer Tomioka Atsuhiro has delivered some wonderful eps so far and I hope he writes the finale of this arc and makes it memorable.
So, yeah Super makes the production committee tons of money, can come up with an above average plot with serviceable animation and provide entertainment to the target audience. What more can it possibly do to justify its existence?
