Vegeta thinking Goku was a SSJ during Recoome battle

Nope. You only get the zenkai from a brush with death, ie., surviving it.

I think what Mac's getting at is we only learn Saiyans get a zenkai if they're beaten to near-death/recover from serious fatigue/etc., we're never actually told or hinted that they get more powerful after being killed. When taking some filler in the anime within consideration, Vegeta looks to be at the same power level he was at when battling Freeza during his short confrontation with Gohan on Earth (after Namek's explosion) and when Goku has kept his body in Otherworld, he appears to probably be at the same level he was when he died during his battle with Pikuhan. Just my assumptions.
