Funi got One Piece
Funi got One Piece
Didn't see the news posted elsewhere, so thought I'd post it.
Starting with episode 144, Funi's in house cast and crew, will go back later to the first 143, possibly sooner rather than later.
15 episode boxsets for 50 bucks 2 to 3 times a year. (dubbed and subbed)
Sounds better then 4kids...
Thoughts?
'relates to DBZ in some fashion'
err...I'm sure a DBZ cast member will be there in some fashion...plus Funimation is doing it.

That new website Funi was funding, animeOnline ( http://animeonline.com/index.php?page=n ... _id=101234 )
Cartoon Network isn't letting them have smoking or alcohol? Aren't both of those things present in the Naruto dub?I get FUNi not wanting to argue with their given guidelines, but it doesn't make sense to me why Cartoon Network would give diffrent shows within the same general timeblock diffrent standards.

Glorious happy day! I will whore my seven bajillion dollars out into buying the DVD's if I have to...and then another seven bajillion dollars for the Ultimate Super Sexy Awesome Platnium Gold Remastered editions with all episodes up to 1-143...
It's a vicious and terrible cycle...Oh, FUNimation...why do you tease us so with your sugary treats of Uncutness?
Oh well, I hope it's just a matter of time before 4Kids cracks and gives up the rest of the properties they screwed up.

All they really have now is Yu-Gi-Oh, YGO GX, and... I guess Shaman King, but two of those are done, and GX's dub is actually ok. They got rid of Pokemon, so unless your talking about stuff like TMNT, there isn't much left for them to get rid of... Wait... Did they ever wrap up Sonix X?Tatsunoboshi Horoko wrote:Oh well, I hope it's just a matter of time before 4Kids cracks and gives up the rest of the properties they screwed up.
Anyways... Does anyone have any idea as to what episode the dub is currently on?

OH THANK GOD!!The interview wrote:And it’ll still be totally uncut on DVD.
COOK: Yes.
I am soooo happy about this news I could almost cry! Thank you FUNimation!!!!!
There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

I'm reading the interview right now. I don't mind some slight censoring for TV broadcast, since now, thanks to 4Krap, One Piece's target age demographic has kinda already been set. But at least we know with FUNimation, we'll get good, uncut DVD releases and the like.
Anyhoo, opinions on the interview...
Thank God, no retarded accents for Sanji and Robin.
Oh, F***, Sanji's lolipop is still gonna be there, and Smoker's cigars won't be lit. But that's not FUNimation's fault. Stupid FCC douchebags.
Name changes are gonna be fixed. Hooray!
Original music! No more retarded rap opening! Huzzah!

Mr. Sabat will do a good job no matter who he gets (and yeah, he's probably gonna be in it). He'd probably be a good Zoro or Sanji, or maybe Enel. Or Franky? He's likely gonna be one of the more masculine of the male Straw Hats, I'll betcha that.bkev wrote:I'm worried about Mr. Sabat getting 9/10 roles in the show...
but can't be picky when they fix everything else!
and as for the similar to DBZ... "ZOMFG WIDESCREEN LOL"
I heard that now it's broadcast in widescreen... but I'm not sure. And hopefully FUNi won't try that crap.
Like most recent anime, and unlike DragonBall, the later season of One Piece are done in HD widescreen, starting with the arc after the one FUNi's picking up at. Hopefully, they WILL put it in widescreen when appropriate.

The YGO and Shaman King properties were the two I were actually referring to. (Besides the others like Kinnikuman) I can't stand line after line of bad 80's taglines and poop and fart jokes.Hao_Kaiser wrote:I guess Shaman King, but two of those are done, and GX's dub is actually ok.Tatsunoboshi Horoko wrote:Oh well, I hope it's just a matter of time before 4Kids cracks and gives up the rest of the properties they screwed up.

Thank God One Piece has finally gone to worthy and caring (as long as the letter Z isn't separate in the show title) hands. I do think it kinda sucks that FUNi's basically whipped in every manner of dub treatment except their actual DVD releases, I mean Cartoon Network's basically saying to abide by a few ridiculous standards that Naruto and Bobo can get away with, not to mention Toei insisting they keep names consistent with 4Kids' dub and video games (Zolo for all to see). But at least FUNi will be giving this thing proper uncut DVD releases, this is what we've all been literally praying for, and I hope they'll start it from episode 1 rather than episode 144 (have had enough issues with DBZ/GT and Case Closed, thank ya' very much). I really thought FUNi had no chance at this due to Viz having DVD distribution rights, but my God am I glad they got it! No screw-job DVD releases, an uncut dub with the Japanese music, and NO MORE insane butchering (39 episodes of content lost, 4Kids >_>) or disrespectful dialogue/plot/character developing changes. Free at last, free at last; after 2 1/2 years of pure torture and torment, One Piece is free at last!
14 years later
I had a good feeling that FUNi was going to get One Piece. It is going to be a good dub. I pray that they don't treat it the same way that Dragon Ball Z was treated. Original music please! For the love of Kami, no fucking rap intros!
Also, something interesting I found over at the AP Forums:
EDIT: After reading the interview, all I can say is...this is going to be the biggest "Dragon Ball Z" ever. The first 144 episodes are edited with different voice actors, and from there on, its all uncut. Remind anyone of anything? Expect some Ultimate Uncut Editions of the first 144 episodes in the future
Also, something interesting I found over at the AP Forums:
Apparently, a FUNimation representative responded with:1: Any idea how the Episode titles will be handled? Can we expect good, long titles that carry a sense of excitement, or will they be pun-ridden snippets of doom?
2: Zoro. It HAS to be Zoro, please!:
- VIZ started out with Zoro in the beginning, and was only switched around to confirm to 4KIDS changing it.
- It has been written in english MANY times as the official romanization. In the wanted posters, T-Shirts, Video Games, posters, etc.
- The name "Zolo" is also used by a toy store, a technoloy manufacturer, a WINE, among other things.
3: Can we expect powerful words to be used? No more of this "Darn", "Shucks", "I-Strongly-Dislike-Your-Demeanor-But-Still-Respect-You-As-A-Person" stuff? Could you sneak in a "Damn" or two?
I'm happy that they are going to keep some cursing, but I am very unhappy about the whole "Zolo" thing.1. Do you mean with the subs or the dub? The subs will have the directly-translated titles. The dub titles are up to the dub writers, so I'm not sure what they want to do.
2. The translation team's been pushing for "Zoro" this whole time. The official list says to use Zolo, but we've been vocal about trying to get it changed. I don't think it's going to get approved though, personally I guess that's just how Toei wanted it.
3. Yep, the subs have swearing (though nothing like the f word) when it should, but without going too overboard with it. I presume that since the TV version is being tamed down a bit that the language might be too, but I also assume that the uncut DVDs will include swearing in the dub. This is all just an educated guess, so please don't take it as fact. The amount of swearing allowed is one of the very first things the translation team asked about, and luckily we don't have to use things like "dagnabbit" and "gosh dang it to heck"

Well, at least we can't POSSIBLY blame FUNI for that. I'm sure that if it hadn't been for CN, they would propably start at episode 1.fps_anth wrote:EDIT: After reading the interview, all I can say is...this is going to be the biggest "Dragon Ball Z" ever. It would seem so. "Zoro" is just to close for comfort to the copyrighted named of a certain black-masked swordsman, apparently.bkev wrote:So, it's still gonna be zolo?
"Zoro" to "Zolo" isn't that big a deal, IMO, since there's at least a good reason for the slight change. Better than "Smoker" to "Chaser."

I wouldn't count on it, with them actually going back and censoring there old manga like Dragonball along with Dragonball Z it seems like they can only get worse from here.bkev wrote:I'd be happier if it was ZoRo, as then maybe PIZ (oh wow, I'm sooo original with my insults) might change it back.

As great as this probably is, I can't have a double-standard and have an off-topic thread just because it's of importance to us here at the site and we have lots of things to say about it. But... I'll put in my own two-cents before I close it, anyway
.
(01) What happened the last time FUNimation's in-house voice actors took control of a cast of characters previously done by another cast and tried to make it their own? Oh, right. Let's not forget 1999, as much as we want to, and as much as we probably should.
(02) Let's not jump to conclusions about ANYTHING regarding ANYTHING until full-on, legitimate, public, compliance-approved statements start coming out of various camps.
(03) Put your money where your mouth is and buy the fucking sets when they come out. For the love of god, show them what we want.
(04) I'm never going to watch the dub. It's not for me. It will never be for me. However, let's remember one of the biggest lessons we learned from DBZ... the original Japanese version is always going to be there, and I want to thank FUNimation for bringing it to us in the future. Just make sure you give it to Steve...
