Masako Nozawa has nailed the voice of Goku Black
Re: Masako Nozawa has nailed the voice of Goku Black
What I find really interesting is that there are many dub only fans who watch Super and don't necessarily like Nozawa's Goku, but actually prefer her take on Black compared to what we heard from Schemmel in XV2. It seems like the majority prefers Nozawa because she "captures" the character better. It makes you wonder what people would think of the actual Goku if they saw DB/Z in Japanese first and heard Schemmel's Goku after...

Re: Masako Nozawa has nailed the voice of Goku Black
Honestly, I'd have a problem with this voice either way. Sean makes for a great Goku now, but the game's voice for Black sounds vaguely like he's channeling Old Snake from MGS4. A little more fitting for a withered, already somewhat grizzled voiced soldier...less so for Black.
I believe they'll fix it when it comes time to actually do the anime. Or at least make it less rough.

I wasn't expecting anything less from Masako Nozawa. She's truly a one of kind seiyuu and her performance as Goku Black is truly remarkable.

I watched Saitama's Japanese voice first, but am just fine with his English one. Saw the HxH dub first, but like the sub voices just the same or more. I generally don't like the high-pitch thing on a muscular male lead. It's pretty grating and awkward to me.
Black sounds deeper and very imposing in the Japanese version. The tone of his voice really fits his character. Idk how to explain it. Her performance is very impressive. In XV2, he sounds like your average run of the mill grunt. Very unfitting, imo.

You can say that again. I've commented on this before in the Xenoverse 2 thread, and my comment still stands:fadeddreams5 wrote:Don't even. Sean, you can really do better than this.Sean's Goku Black voice sounds... unfitting, to say the very least. I did wonder if he would take the gruff, baritone direction that he took with SSJ4 in GT, and it seems like he did with Goku Black. Hate to say it, but it really doesn't mesh with the character's persona presented in the show. It sounds like he's angry and frustrated 24/7, when it's actuality, Goku Black is far more calm and sophisticated even if he's in a situation that may seem to threaten his well being. I hope Sean takes a different direction with how he voices Goku Black in Super because I really wouldn't prefer for Goku Black to sound like this when Super eventually gets dubbed. Because if Goku Black does sound like this gruff, baritone and grizzled hardman that always seem annoyed, then I may be tempted to watch the Future Trunks arc in its entirety subbed considering how much screen-time Goku Black gets, especially in key moments in the arc.

Not to cast aspersions on your experience as an individual, but I do imagine this is a little vindicating for fans of the original version who shouted into a void for years that the very popular dub cast didn't match the characterizations in the original. This is the very reason we've seen e-debates over, say, the first two English-language Freeza voices for years, with many who grew up with them defending their approach, while plenty argued they were far, far off from Ryusei Nakao.fadeddreams5 wrote:Don't even. This is the first time a large swathe of more casual fans have spent a lot of time with the Japanese cast prior to the material, or entirely new characters, being dubbed, and lo and behold we're seeing the same reactions from them.
It's going to be hard for certain people to not be a little (fairly) smug, even if it's over the smallest, pettiest thing in the world at the end of the day.
Also, Nozawa's been a little higher pitched on average in new material than in the original run of Z, but Black's register isn't that far off from the one she often went to during her first portrayal of adult Goku, a performance that has historically been one of the biggest sticking points for dub-only fans told they'll easily get used to it and that it fits.

Honest question, how long after you first saw the dub did you hear Nozawa as Goku ? Don't get me wrong, I hate the whole "you only like cuz ya saw it first" excuse, but I am pretty interested.

Interestingly, I heard Nozawa's Goku before Schemmel's. I watched bootleg Japanese VHS tapes while the Namek saga first aired on Toonami.Soppa Saia People wrote: Honest question, how long after you first saw the dub did you hear Nozawa as Goku ? Don't get me wrong, I think Nozawa's acting is great. Just never been a fan of the sound of Goku's voice. Though when Nozawa does that deeper tone for SSJ in the Namek arc and SSJ4 in GT, it's pretty neat--the anger seaps through.

That's cool. I'm also not a huge fan of Nozawa's default adult Goku voice. I don't dislike it, but she's capable of doing better. But even that is a voice director problem.fadeddreams5 wrote:Interestingly, I heard Nozawa's Goku before Schemmel's. All Sean Schemmel needs is just a little bit of sass and his Goku Black would be better. He just sounds angry here.

I picture Goku Black sounding more like Aizen from the Bleach dub than what Schemmel did in XV2.

She voices Goku, Gohan, Goten, Bardock, Turles and Black. Why wasn't Raditz voiced by her? Why does he have to be left out of the family?
