So based on the official subs, Funimation's going with Evil Containment Wave.....

Damn, I was really hoping they'd be faithful with this technique and just call it the Mafuba because that sounds more badass and fits better to say alongside the Kamehameha. Oh well, like one fan pointed out - I guess it's better for them to keep with their established names for the English dub.

Has there been confirmation that Funimation has involvement in this translation?

Well, no - But I just assumed because it's a Funimation term.UpFromTheSkies wrote:Has there been confirmation that Funimation has involvement in this translation?

You are a prettty interesting fan Mecha! I have always liked you, because of the way we agree on most things.
I'm glad you like Mafuba. I hope they go with that.

Why wouldn't they? Even when dubbing Kai, BoG, and RoF, they stuck with their pre-established dub terms. Krillin, Launch, Hyperbolic Time Chamber, King Kai. even "Freeza" is still spelled "Frieza" in the new material. I hope no one was expecting otherwise.mecha3000 wrote:Damn, I was really hoping they'd be faithful with this technique and just call it the Mafuba because that sounds more badass and fits better to say alongside the Kamehameha. I'm fairly certain the subs are Toei, not FUNimation. Even so, I'd have to agree. Mafuba is short and to the point, like Masenko.

They use Funimation's terms, so they're at least indirectly influenced by them.Anime Kitten wrote:I'm fairly certain the subs are Toei, not FUNimation. Even so, I'd have to agree. Mafuba is short and to the point, like Masenko.

Likewise, various other dubs of Kai and beyond, like the European Portuguese and the Catalan, and to a lesser extent Galligo (which I heard made a couple corrections to their old terms) and Latino Spanish (apparently.they are using a couple Funi terms now?) kept their old terms (Not 100% sure of German and Brazilian Portuguese). I find it amusing how France is like "We're going to translate the show like nothing AB Groupe dubbed before we got Kai ever happened", abandoning the old dub names and increasing accuracy and clarity as a result.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:Why wouldn't they? "Evil Containment Wave" is a perfectly servicable translation. Sure, it takes a lot longer to say than Mafuuba, but at least it conveys what the technique is. To a Japanese viewer (or at least reader), 魔封波 is instantly understandable. To an English-speaking viewer it's a couple of random syllables that mean nothing.
