Celipa, Serippa, Fasha, and Pasha

Post by Xyex » Sat May 08, 2004 4:36 am

Alright, I've seen all four names used for the female member of Bardock's team. The first two as Toei original and the last two as FUNi's names. I'm pretty sure I heard 'Pasha' when I saw the special but not sure. Anyone here know what is really used?

Her real name is Seripa or I guess Celipa. It's supposed to be a play on "celery" if I'm not mistaken. The other two, Fasha and Pasha are nothing more than lame dub names.

Seripa is a switcharound of paaseri, with the long a omitted:
[pa][-][se][ri] -> [se][ri][pa]

Paaseri is "parsley", so it's probably best spelled as something like Selypa. :)

Oh, so it's parsley then? I used to think that's what it was a play on, but then I was told that it was celery. Thanks for clearing that up for me Rach. 8)

Fascha and Pascha are from fanfictions like crazy for some reason. ...Though I can't think of an example off the top of my head, or why they took that as her name. :P

Eh, for some reason I prefer the name Pasha, which isn't just from Fanfics Dayspring, that's the name Funi gave her.

Hmm... well, if nothing else I've added to my dbz Knowledge and gain some new Saiya-jin names for my fanfics. :D

FUNi gave her a name? Why? Her name's never said in the special. O_o

Why do you even need to ask? Isn't it generally accepted that FUNimation will do whatever the hell it wants, for no reason? :?

**Remembers how French version of anime takes it a step further**

"HOOOOWAAAAAAIIIN SANE VURAAAAAAYYY!!! SANE LUH MEESTER FUREEEEEEEZERRRRRR!!!"

Translates to: "HHHYYEEAAAAAAAAAHHHSSS TATZ TRRRRUUUUUUUU!!! TATZ DAH MEESTER FUREEEEEEEEEZERRRRR!!!"

As opposed to: "F-Furiiza-sama!" (this is said by the second alien after Freeza comes out of his ship to blow up planet Vegeta)

NONONO Even better! (Android saga-Krillin talking to Piccolo before Kami fusion)
"Tu peux nous le dire, Petit Coeur! Nous sommes tous des amis ici!"
"Amis?! DEPUIS QUAND EST-CE QUE JE SUIS DEVENU TON AMI?! JE SUIS LE DEMON PETIT COEUR!!!"

Translates to:
"You can tell us, Little Heart! We're all friends here!"
"FRIENDS?! SINCE WHEN HAVE WE BEEN FRIENDS?! I AM THE DEMON LITTLE HEART!"

No wonder Krillin told Tenshinhan not to worry about Piccolo! It's just so damn hard to take a threat from a demon named "Little Heart" seriously.

On a somewhat related note... not quite on the level of Bardock being a scientist, but one of my favorite FUNimation writing fuck-ups...

Dub DBZ, episode 4

Kuririn: Wh... who's Kami?

... YOU KNOW WHO HE IS, ASSHOLE. YOU'VE MET HIM. Then again, the FUNimation writers didn't have a clue, at that point :P.

I think they did that because of their skipping most of DB and their audience wouldn't know who Kami was. Hopefully if they're not too lazy, they'll fix that in the redub.

In Japanese, "Seripa." (I usually anglicize the spelling to "Selypa.")

Okay, I get Kakarrot being carrot, Raditz being Radish, and hell, even Bardock being Brocolli. But Selypa being a pun on parsely? Not seeing it.

Um.... Bardock isn't Brocolli (Brolly is by the way). Bardock is, believe, Burdock. Or, at least something similar.

Anyway, look at it this way. Par-Sely, Sely-Pa(r)

That makes sense.

But I thought it was Bar-dock = Bur-ock-oli. What on earth sort of vegetable is "burdock"?

I'll just use Selypa, then. Let's give it a test run:

"OMG SELYPA IS GOKU'S MOM WTF!"

Yeah, that'll do nicely. :)

No thanks. I'll use Pasha, sounds better IMO.

As for the exact pun for Bardock's name... eh, not to sure. I KNOW I saw it somewhere before (DaizeEX needs a complete name pun's section!) but most sites I go to now don't have him listed. However, I do remember the word was either Japanese or Chinese.

The pun is, indeed, "Burdock." According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, it is:
n. Any of a genus (Arctium) of coarse composite herbs bearing globular flower heads with prickly bracts.

So, there you are. 8)
