FUNimation Future Plans (+ OVA Thoughts)

Post by JesseD » Mon Apr 16, 2007 6:31 pm

Funimation said they will be doing all of Dragon Ball Z. These releases are rubbish. I don't even own the first set yet. They're going to be released in July here. In their technical trailer they clearly showed DBZ Moive 8. And it was "re-mastered". But will they do a 16:9 re-do of the Gaiden game footage? It would be godly if they could do just a 4:3 release of it. And mixed the audio properly. But beggars can't be choosers. If I can't get the Dragon Boxes, then they gonna have to do it. I've seen snipets of it, and there's is some good fighting. It would make damn good music video footage.

But does anyone know if Funimation will do it? They said the'll be doing ALL of Z. If they don't do it, then it's false advertising. But didn't they already do that with this "frame by frame" re-mastering? They are liars.

If I can't get the Dragon Boxes, then this would be my only chance to get it. I refuse to get bootlegs. So yeah... it would mean a lot to me if anyone has an answer to this. Thank you.

I seriously doubt it.

Let's face it; while it's become (in)famous amongst DragonBall fans, the Playdia game footage thingie is really just... well, a visual guide for an obscure Japanese game which will likely never see any sort of release outside of Japan. There's really no reason for FUNimation to do anything with it.

They already did all of Z. Z consists of 291 episodes, 13 movies and two television specials. As far as I know, FUNimation has done exactly that.

You can't count that weird walkthrough game footage as part of Z, as it's not. I mean, by your logic FUNimation would have to dub every DBZ commercial ever made because "it's part of the series."

It'd be cool, though, to see the walkthrough footage get a touch up and re-release over here. I doubt it'll ever happen though.

Am I the only one that thinks the OVA sucks?

Anyways... There is no reason for FUNi to bring over the footage. A very small fraction of the mainstream DB fans will actually understand the ... uh... Significance of what there watching. Maybe if they were doing to remaster stuff back in 2002 or something, but there isn't really a reason to bring it over. In other words, look for it on Youtube, or something like that.

That's a confusing sentence...
The Playdia game recycled animation from the visual guide/OVA. The OVA was released before the Playdia game.

Oh, well, see? It's so obscure, I'm not even sure what the hell it is...

By my logic it's a movie/special. So they should dub it. BUt who am I to tell them to?

They can't dub it. There is no IT.

IT = International Track. :)

The track, or actually there are two tracks. The BGM and the SFX. ;)
I doubt that TOEI (or which company would give the license) produced a real IT for the dubbing in other languages.

No other company which licensed the DB/DBZ/DBGT series, has released the PlayDia footage and there are no dubs of it.

No. I agree. I tried watching it once and I thought it was boring. That footage of them going through time and using that phone that you hook up to your TV was more interesting than that. The only reason I even watched that is because I was testing my skills with Japanese.

I doubt it would ever happen. If they released it, it would probably sell bad. There would be so much confusion for fans who have never heard about it and every body who has heard of it has most likely watched on youtube or what not.

Oh, and by the way, that's a pretty cool avatar Timo.

Funimation should dub and sell the OVA so all their 9 year old fans can waste their money.

I can already see what would happen if Funimation ever did release it. Naturally being Funimation they'd market it as a "lost movie"

I'd like to see it be dubbed or if not have it as a bonus feature on one of the DVD boxsets.

The "OVA" was horrible.

I was bored to tears when I first saw it, but I managed to entertain myself by naming the odd-looking villain "Pink Dildo Man". Take a look at him and you'll realize that the name works.

As for FUNimation's future with Dragonball, I don't think there is one. All I can see happening is re-release upon re-release. Unless, of course they were to produce their own new DB series or something.
Hi, I'm WeeklyTubeShow. Innagadadavida and I like to make videos.

Perhaps you'd like to see one.

Hell no, most people think it blows. I personally love it, but that's just me being an oddball.

Their future lies with One Piece now, and hopefully they'll treat it like Yuyu Hakusho. Dragonball...is over. It died a horrible death in which horrible season sets were released and sold because of crappy price, and hardly a fan raised a finger to stop it.

The OVA really does suck, too. I never even bothered watching all of it after seeing a couple tidbits. So utterly overrated for it's "mystique".

Wow Duo. Glass half empty be damned!

Well in a way that is true... I mean there will be no more new chapters of the manga, episodes or movies (I mean GT ended what... 1998? ). As for the American fandom... sadly we are probably a minority. Hell this forum is not completley unified as to what is good or not good concerning the series. I sincerely hope that this widescreen release isin't the final release of the series here in North America... :x

As for the "OVA".... what was the big deal anyway? It was just animated cutscenes for a video game that's it! Nothing really spectacular. Once I found out about it I lost complete interest... and really the story is not that interesting anyway. :? I doubt it will be released as some "hot new product" considering it's for an old console. If the footage was rehashed as a marketing scheme then FUNi would sink to a new low.

I would say that the "big deal" is a desire to be as complete as possible. Granted, no one is saying it's a masterpiece or anything, but it might be nice to see it avalible at the store.

Is it worse than the stories of the "Dragon Ball Z" movies though?
