I had also thought the sword would come into play somehow when the little girl in the last episode picked up a broken half.

His sword is not normal right???? Maybe it has some abilities even Future Trunks doesn't know ??

How is he going to seal him in the sword when he doesn't have a seal? Otherwise he'd just use the jar? He can't use the mafuba.

Trunks' blade is broken so he's just replacing it with ki I think.

I really like that idea. More satisfying than seal him in the jar and It would be a good parallel to the Z Sword.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Mafuba requires a container. A sword is not a container. And requires a paper seal. They forgot it in the past.

We do not know which technique Beerus used to seal Old Kaioshin in the Z sword (which had no paper seal)... but I'm pretty sure it's not the Mafuba.

That blue sword probably was generated by the blue aura part of Trunks's Super form, much like how Goku Black's ki sword was generated by his aura.
