The 'Demon World'?

Post by caejones » Fri May 04, 2007 1:55 pm

It's hard to decide if this goes in questions or general discussion...

So, what do we know about the Demon World of the DB-verse? The place from which Dab'ra originates and all of that.
I believe in mid DB there was a (filler?) episode where Goku traveled to the Demon World and fought the then Demon Lord... or something.

It seems like it was brought up in the Buu saga because there was a need for villains that could stand up to the power of the SSJ fighters, and since none in our universe would have much luck at going unnoticed (Well, unless it's Rild...o... person... >.<), what better to do than say "This is an anti-verse with equally powerful people... but they're evil!".

Which brings us to the next point... is the demon world just a place where evil reigns supreme, separate from our world for the most part, with some powerful folks independent of the things in the regular world? Or does it have something similar to an anti-everyone (almost)? Meh... And... whatever else is interesting. ^^

I always thought of it as that same demon realm that exists in Yu Yu Hakusho where they go to fight demons all the time.

Whenever it was mentioned in the series (don't forget Devil-- one of Baba's fighters) I always assumed they were referring to hell.

It's not hell, and it doesn't appear to be a parallel dimension either. According to the Daizenshuu map, it's located in the "lower portion" of the Universe.

But the portal in DB could be also a portal to Dabara's world... All we know is that he came from a Demonic World and the DB demon world seems also alike.

Many series have a 'Makai', or Demon World, but that doesn't automatically mean it's hell (jigoku). Also keep in mind that if the Makai was hell then it's plausible that King Yama could have sent Dabura back when he was sentenced(of course he didn't).

The one series that does try to pass off Makai as hell is Ah! My Goddess with Hild as the Daimakaicho (Great Demon World Leader/Boss), though I've heard her also referred to as the Queen of Hell. It does get confusing as her place puts her in line with Dabura and Raizen from Yu Yu Hakusho
It's the show that brings you in, but it's the fandom that wears you out.

Do you have to be like that with every response?

I think his point was that referring to something as 'filler', whether it is or not, isn't really an answer to the question.

Here's a few terms to note from the daizenshuu:

Akuma (Devil):
Being from Hell. This term designates only one of the races among those who live in Hell. Akkuman, who fought confronted Songoku at the Demon's Washroom (DB 9) is part of this race.
[Note] The demons from Hell like Akkuman and those of the Demon Realm are not part of the same race.

Akumakai (The Devil Realm):
The realm situated beneath the World of the Living. It's also called the World of Shadows. Also see "Maikai."

Ankokumakai (The World of Shadows):
Realm located beneath the World of the Living. It's also called The Demon Realm. Also see "Maikai."

Uchuu (The Universe):
The infinite space containing all the celestial bodies that exist in the Lower World. Along with the Demon Realm, it's only one part of the great world of DragonBall. The Universe is situated underneath the afterlife and is hermetically sealed by a wall engraved with mysterious drawings. The interior of the universe contains four galaxies. Each of these galaxies is under the charge of a god (Note: Gloss translation. Probably supposed to say "a god of the Kaios," meaning a Kaioshin). The Earth is found in a solar systeme of the Northern Galaxy.
[Note] There existes a universal police force. However, they had no power in the face of Freeza and the Saiyans.

Maikai (The Demon Realm):
World situated beneath the universe. It consists of a place different than Hell. An irrational world, it's sorcery that reigns supreme here. As the universe is seperated into four zones, North, South, East, and West, the Demon Realm is also divided into numerous parts. But the uncontested king of this realm is Dabura.

Maikai No Mon (The Doorway to the Realm of the Dead)*:
The doorway is found between the afterlife and the world of the living. Goku, while training for the 22nd budokai, found this doorway. In using it, he was forced to face the martial arts expert of the demon realm, Shura. The doorway to this realm is found at the entrance of a cave.

EDIT: [Note] is a note from the daizenshuu, whereas parenthetical notes are comments from me. The asterisk is the method the daizenshuu used to point something out as existing only in the anime.

...
Sounds like the filler scene simply used the terms "Demon Realm" and Hell interchangeably since the Buu saga hadn't debuted yet. Clearly the filler created portal leads to Hell, and that Hell and the Demon Realm are two seperate places.

Well, considering it's early filler, I wouldn't really expect a connection with Darbra, who appears toward the end of the manga...

Now, sure, my message was more like an opinion, not an actual answer to the question, but so were the previous messages in the thread.
Heck, I'm "always like that with every response"? What about the one where I tried to provide some facts?
The words "uncalled for" come to mind...
