16:9 is a good thing for the movies. As long as it's just the DBZ movies that is. I assume the DB movies were originally full screen?SSj Kaboom wrote:@_@sangofe wrote:Update again: In addition to the price drop (wich is now 57.00 EUR~77.4430 USD, NOT 130), it seems like the movies will be in 16:9, not 4:3, like previously stated.

All the DragonBall/DragonBall Z movies were animated in 4:3 but framed for widescreen. So, while having the 4:3 version is interesting because you gain a little footage, it's almost the same as FUNimation's 16:9 versions in that it's peripheral details (only, with 4:3 versions of the movies you don't lose anything unlike FUNimation's 16:9 sets). Plus, there are occasional animation goofs if you watch the films in 4:3 (ala Gohan's Masenko against...whatever the hell that midget alien's name is in DBZ movie 3).Kula wrote:16:9 is a good thing for the movies. Yeah, I know that. My frustration was from the fact that we never got 16:9 movies from FUNimation. At least, not yet. I'm hoping a widescreen MovieBox will be forthcoming as one good thing from FUNi's sets.Kula wrote:16:9 is a good thing for the movies.

I'll bet £10 right now that the TV specials will be included in FUNI's movie boxset, but cropped to 16:9.SSj Kaboom wrote:Yeah, I know that. Just wait until Mexico has them. Intertrack makes a good one or Funi makes a good one or some dark horse candidate makes one. Yeah...this is pretty noteworthy and a good find overall. Although, it just makes my hope for a domestic release of the Mexican dub with Dragonbox footage all the more strong. Yeah ALL the movies would be sweet, even just the movies. There are some I haven't seen and it would be nice to see them in the format that they were "meant to be seen". I just don't understand any French, that's all.

"All right. We understand that the fans of Dragon Ball Z do not appreciate the Widescreen presentation that we have released. So, with the up coming Movie box, 4:3 format WILL be used! No need to thank us. We just wanna keep the fans happy."
Regarding the French release, sounds really nice.

Or, even worse, they WILL be in 16:9, but cropped from their normal 4:3 versions.fps_anth wrote:"All right. To be more clear, the movies *are* animated in 4:3. They're simply matted to make them 16:9. FUNimation has released the movies in open-matte, so if they cropped it...we'd get the same aspect ratio as the original presentation. Nothing would be lost that wasn't animated with the intention of being lost in the first place.MajinVejitaXV wrote:All the DragonBall/DragonBall Z movies were animated in 4:3 but framed for widescreen.

Ah.
You learn something new every day.

I believe some live-action movies, minus special effect shots (which are pan-and-scanned), also have back-up open matte full-screen prints. The Back to the Future trilogy's DVD release, for example, apparently utilizes these prints, as the movies don't look like they have an obvious pan-and-scan effect through out. Similar to the DBZ movies, footage on the sides of the screen is meant to be viewed, while that on the top and bottom is expendable (apparently that's FUNi's philosophy with the season sets of DBZ >_>;; ). Class dismissed?MajinVejitaXV wrote: To be more clear, the movies *are* animated in 4:3. They're simply matted to make them 16:9. Yep, although the reason for the full-frame animation is simply so that they wouldn't have to change anything from making the TV series. Using the exact same film and the exact same process (just framed a little differently) is the cheapest and easiest solution. Thanks to the natural ratio of the 16mm film, the transition from 4:3 to 16:9 is quite simple. However, unlike BttF which was typically released in full-screen back in the VHS days, thus benefitting from the film ratio, DBZ was never actually intended to be seen like this, based on the matted Japanese VHS's.Conan the SSJ wrote:I believe some live-action movies, minus special effect shots (which are pan-and-scanned), also have back-up open matte full-screen prints. Same idea in both, but for very different reasons.

For the love of Kami, don't give them ideas. I wouldn't put it past them.
