Remastered or Redone?

Post by Mr.Piccolo » Thu May 10, 2007 11:45 am

Looking at how all the trouble we'd have to go through to get DB/Z/GT's anime complete the way we want it I was thinking. What would you rather have: Remastered anime like the DragonBox (hella expensive) or would you like to see the series redone with new animation? I know a lot of people like the classic feel of the series but looking at it now, especially when I compare it to newer anime, it feels dated IMO.

Maybe a new series that retold the events of Dragonball (Z included) could be done to tell the entire story week by week. If it was done this way, maybe it'd bring a new level of fandom. On the other hand, remastered could be better. Shows take time and money and I don't know if people are willing to sacrifice those...So what're your thoughts: would you want it remastered or redone? I need to know! (Not really, but I'd be nice to hear from other fans).

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

If they were feature-length movies I'd like to see it redone in current animation styles.

But if it comes to releasing the series itself I'd rather see a remastered version.

Like that Dragonball movie. Path to power I think it is called.

I would rather have a proper Dragonbox quality release of the old series that I've loved and been a fan of for years, than new animation. Of course it's going to look outdated if you compare it to something made recently, but you know, there's plenty of newer, "pretty" looking anime series out there that are crap. If I went by judging an anime based on how dated it looked or just looked in general, I'd have missed out on a lot of really good and/or unique series over the years.

I would actualy be very happy if they just re-animated the many episodes of Dragonball Z that look like crap. And I don't mean the re-animation to look like GT art but just look like the well drawn Dragonball Z episodes.

I always hated these episodes. After every 3 episodes they would have one episode that looked like a kid drew it.

I would love them to re-draw these episodes to look like the other 3 episodes.

Of the two, I'd rather have a good remastered release. But I wouldn't mind at all if Toei were to reproduce one or more parts of the series as either Path to Power-style specials, or miniseries.

Remastered is my choice, even as a DragonBox owner. The show is good enough as is.

HOWEVER, I would gladly welcome a new OVA/Movie retelling as well. Still, the aged appearance doesn't bug me at all. Then again, I'm not a 9 year old ;p

Funny thing is I think Path to Power might be my favourite movie they've done.

Anything new: current styles, like the did for DB Movie 4.

Anything re-released: just remaster what currently exists.

Is an OVA even possible at this point? Hasn't Toriyama-san stated that he was going to do one more anime and than call it quits? I would love to see some new stuff, it's only been 10 years, but what's the likelyhood?

I agree 100%. It would feel too odd seeing the series re-done with new animation. I'd prefer little chunks here and there as in Movies. It's more appreciatable in my opinion. I mean if they re-did 200+ episodes in New Animation...after about 10-20 we'd be like..."

Oh yeah, new animation...cool *yawn*...let's pop in the old series...classic stuff".

But with a movie, we'd have about 45-70 Minutes to be a total fanboy nerd and bask in the glory of the animation.

It would really depend on HOW the series would be redone. We've seen the original series, Funimation's releases before the current boxsets should be good enough for most people.

However, a redone version of the series would only work if either it diverged from the manga, creating an alternate version of events or if it was completely fillerless. Otherwise, we would be better off just getting a remastered version of what we have (preferrably with the entire screen intact).

Toriyama had little to do with the anime(other than designs), so his level of involment wouldn't make much of a difference, if that what you were thinking.

Anyway, like the majority is saying; I prefer to see the series remastered, but a new movie/ova would be nice.

Hmmm... some of the movies were kind of retellings of certain stories...

Movie 3 - Saiyans
Movies 5 and 6 - Freeza
Movie 7 - Androids/Cell
Movie 12 - Buu

Movie 13 was a nice and mythical departure from the standard DBZ formula, although the mythical stuff was a tad out of place. I would prefer a new story that still has a simple, yet outrageous DBZ feel to it like movie 1.

Out of those two options, a new show animated from the ground-up would be a LOT more expensive than simply remastering a show that's already finished.

Dogasu! Hey! Long time no see! Fancy meeting you here!

...Errr, I guess you don't remember me. I was the pesky guy who kept sending in little translations and this and that about five years ago, back before your site became Dogasu's Backpack. I've been wanting to get back into Pocket Monsters, since I'm still in love with the BGM, but I just can't seem to bring myself to do it.
Uhh... *ahem* so anyway, I guess I'd better add to the topic at hand if I'm gonna post here. I would have just sent you a PM, but that would be the creepy stalker thing to do. :)

It doesn't bother me that DragonBall is animated in the old style. What bothers me are the episodes that are animated by Triangle Crap Guy and the lot. Much more than anything, that seems to be what DragonBall lacks in spades. There are about five animation styles that just give me a headache due to the complete and total lack of knowledge of proportion and the fact that it looks like the animators' hearts just weren't in it. It seems like they're the idiots who pull off the majority of the episodes, as the rotation constantly seems to fall on their shoulders! What the crap was Toei DOING at the time? Why couldn't it be the better studios and substudios?
That said, there are about three styles that really make me love the episode so much, I don't even care if it's mindless filler material, just so long as it looks sexy. One is undeniably Toei themselves (my favorite); and then there's the style that comes in somewhere around the Android arc, which gives the characters a really sleek look and tends to give a drawl to their mouths. The third one I really like does have its flaws, but what it does right totally makes up for what it does wrong. It animates the characters with smaller, more compact faces (this is highly apparent whenever a character has their mouth wide open in a scream), but the style fits well enough, and I just LOVE how they always make big, sweeping motions whenever a character turns around.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
