Dragon Ball and TV Media Classifications.

Post by Cure Dragon 255 » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:26 pm

Dragon Ball has aired via countless channels and reached millions of kids and adults in the USA. But its interesting to note that one thing has remained consistent, the TV Y7-FV it gets on Kids networks. And even then they have changed over time and over different broadcasters sensibilities. Compare TV Y7 FV Syndication(This even mutated through the run itself! Early episodes were allowed to be more violent and edgy), Cartoon Network(Blood, Death and so on all remained albeit toned down. And even then A formerly TV Y7 FV episode mutated into PG V for the Toonami Revival on April Fools), Kids WB,(Cant Comment),Nicktoons (Death was fine, but gore and over the top violence was not) and Toonzai/Vortexx(I know I'm biased, but I still think they got away with a lot, like the death of Planet Vegeta in the first episode. since that was all fantasy violence. Nonetheless its the most strict broadcaster, They also got to stab Krillin(Not Impale, but stab), albeit bloodlessly)

Now, the uncut version has varied between PG V and so on but some like Krillin getting impaled uncut must have warranted a TV MA rating...at least on Z where it was extended and REALLY gory.

I know its not kosher to 1-Revive such an old thread 2-Double Post. But I would love to see if there ARE people willing to discuss this and I think making a new thread would be wrong, so here it is one more final attempt at discussing this.

Do you think Y7 is a good shot to aim for, being the intended audience and all?

I think it is, yes, after all its the most universal of the ratings, in that Dragon Ball is aimed towards children of such age no matter where you go, not that its the definite demographic, but its indeed the most "Universal" one. Sure there's sexual jokes and scenes that wouldnt make it pass the censors, but the important stuff does make it through.

I had this terrific article I wanted to share, in that some analysts actually feel there is MORE violence on any given TV Y7 FV than in any given MA show. Sure there is more stuff like Game of Thrones that would never fly on kids tv...but kids TV itself is hardly all that innocent either. People in Dragon Ball are, and I quote Chris Psaros who was quite adamant in Dragon Ball keeping its intelligence in the english version, "constantly being stabbed, crushed, blasted, pummelled, vaporized, blown up, decapitated, or otherwise brutalized, and I'm surprised that so many of these scenes have stayed intact."

But do not take this to mean I support the infantilization of children, I think they can stomach Dragon Ball just fine.

Anyway, I thank you with all my heard huzaifa ahmed, for taking interest in this topic and posting in this thread. I really wanted to discuss this with everone.

How have Japanese TV media classifications changed over the years, how do they adapt to Dragon Ball, & how Dragon Ball adapt to them?

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

They used the uncut DVD version from the singles with the blood, which was PG already, and since it was on adult swim, it was fine. The weird thing, I've seen Cartoon Network air PG shows and even Disney Channel did about four years ago.
