That awkward moment when you wonder..."Was that the awesomest thing ever? Or the STUPIDEST thing ever?"?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

That awkward moment when you wonder..."Was that the awesomest thing ever? Or the STUPIDEST thing ever?"?

Post by Fionordequester » Tue Dec 06, 2016 1:36 am

Remember Dragon Ball Super Episode 66? The way there was so much that was awesome about it, and yet, so much that was STUPID about it at the same time? Well, this is the megathread for that! List all those moments in ANY DBZ media where you just could not form an opinion. It's not that the moment was bland, it's just...you legitimately could not tell if you enjoyed it or hated it? It's left you speechless...you just don't know what to do.

So for my first contribution, here's the original demo version of FUNI's "History of Trunks Movie Theme"!

The History of Trunks (as sung by Captain Ginyu Dale Kelly)

Like, dang man; the instrumental itself is amazing, and it's awesome that Dave Kelly loved the franchise THAT much. That he loved it so much that he voiced Captain Ginyu AND was the music and soundtrack producer for both of the T.V. specials; his passion is clearly there for all to see...

...

But those lyrics man...those lyrics. I KNOW what he was going for, his narration is memorable, and he clearly had fun doing it, but they're so...CORNY! And yet, that's half the charm! So is it corny in a good way, or corny in a bad way? I just cannot tell   !
Kataphrut wrote:It's a bit of a Boy Who Cried Wolf situation to me...Basically, the boy shouldn't have cried wolf when the wolves just wanted to Go See Yamcha. If not, they might have gotten some help when the wolves came back to Make the Donuts.
Chuquita wrote:I liken Gokû Black to "guy can't stand his job, so instead of quitting and finding a job he likes, he instead sets fire not only to his workplace so he doesn't have to work there, but tries setting fire to every store in the franchise of that company".

Honestly, nothing even comes close to Episode 66's stupid for me.

I feel like everything about Future Trunks's first appearance qualifies. He shows up by cutting Freeza's henchmen with his sword, adamantly saying he's going to kill him, going Super Saiyan...somehow, then slicing Freeza in half, cutting him into pieces, and blowing those pieces to bits. Then King Cold attacks him, and he kills him even without using his sword.

Like...what?
I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.

Goku apparently breaking time itself and outspeeding Hit's timeskip with his Kaioken was awesome and retarded.

I feel like the show is brimming with moments like these. Maybe it's just Toriyama's wacky, exaggerated style.

It hasn't been historically, at least not back when he was writing Dragon Ball. Even the Boo Arc didn't doo anything as blatantly stupid, and it doesn't come through in Toyotaro's work, so it's probably not Toriyama. More likely, the staff don't know how to handle Dragon Ball without making things groundbreakingly, unintentionally nonsensical. I hate to bring up time travel again, but need I remind everyone how the anime violated time travel rules a shit-load of times? Whereas Toyotaro's manga has made an incorrect implication once. Toriyama definitely doesn't help matters with his vagueness, but more often it's the adapters that are inflaming the nonsense.

I think OP is talking more about moments that are simultaneously badass and stupid or so stupid they become badass, not just things which are stupid.

Such as Vegeta turning into a Super Saiyan, and Krillin pointing out that it's impossible because he needs to be pure of heart like Goku, and Vegeta's brilliant reply of "Oh, I can assure you that I am in fact pure of heart... pure evil!"

That's badass, but equally stupid.

Another example off the top of my head is the various massive powerups characters pull out of their asses. Freeza starts off at least 10 times stronger than every single one of his subordinates besides Ginyu, only to reveal he can transform and grow immensely in power, only to reveal he has two more transformations on top of that, forcing the heroes to work together, fight to their limits and pull out insane powerups of their own just to keep up, but after all that he reveals he still isn't using more than 3% of his true power. That's badass, but pretty retarded. I also like Goku at the 22nd tournament having such a heated battle with Krillin, only to get manhandled by Tenshinhan. Goku however immediately hops up and says "Wow! You're different than the others! You won't die if I hit you hard!" and he proceeds to deal Tenshinhan a beating equal to if not surpassing Ten's former blitz, leaving both Krillin and Roshi with their jaws dropped.

A lot of the dub songs also qualify as good examples of what OP is asking for. Heavy metal in the Broli movie is strangely fitting although still hilarious, and everyone loves Rock the Dragon, but not for the reasons FUNi intended.

Another funny example comes from a One Piece theory I read recently. If you're not familiar, there was a timeskip, and the character Zoro returned missing an eye. An explanation has not been given yet, so people come up with theories, and one theory is that Zoro actually has both eyes, but intentionally kept one of his eyes closed for two years straight to further his training. The idea is that keeping one eye closed would certainly make fighting a lot harder, and when Zoro finally opens his other eye, he's going to receive a huge boost. Keeping one eye closed for two years straight in order to make fighting harder seems like the right balance of badass and moronic for the character.

I get what the point was, what I was talking is closely related to that. I was directly referencing one of those events, I was pointing out the incompetency of the adapters that makes that shit happen all the time.

Goku is a Time Breaker confirmed
But seriously, I didn't find that stupid so much as "Goku is so amazing he can outsmart the laws of time." :P

Come on, it was pretty stupid. In the anime, there had been no prior implication that immense power can override time skips.

Well time travel plotholes are definitely stupid, but I don't understand how they also qualify as awesome. I don't think I understood what you were getting at.

I interpreted it as a JJBA King Crimson style time skip rather than time stop, which makes the scene make more sense.

Nothing will top the "My Bulma". More specifically, Super's take on it. It's some fucking dumb but cool at the same time. Especially if you're a Vegeta fan.

Goku being "faster than time" against Hit. Lol

Future Trunks is just flat out stupid to me.

I know it is a bit off topic... but tied to the original post, what happened to Dale Kelly? He was so involved in the product, creating music, I guess did some sound direction, and was actually one of the better voice actors in Season 3. Funimation completely erased him from existence and why? Falling out perhaps?

On topic: Rock the Dragon. It's lyrics are not thought provoking at all, but it's still fantastic. It has that adrenaline rush atmosphere to it
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Nothing tops Super 66 for the most awesome stupidest shit ever. The whole Kaio-Ken Blue thing takes second though. But I guess you can say the Shadow Dragons fit this as their idea is so awesome but they're mostly not that good.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

It makes a good moniker for Dragon Ball as a whole, though, doesn't it?

Oolong saves the world, Jackie Chun's various close calls, wonderful filler like trenchcoated Giran asking for milk at the bar like it ain't no thing, Commander Red's secret agenda... Beerus the petulant child you love anyway?
