BtM's Review of Funi's Spanish DVD

Post by Bardock the Mexican » Fri May 18, 2007 11:52 pm

Ok folks let's get ready to rumble. This was like as they say somewhere, painful. Compounding this is the fact that I knew what it would be like even before I began this. I knew about the widescreen thing on the Season boxsets (Big Orange Brick 1 and 2) and about some of the more basic mistakes and gaffes in the video quality. The surprising thing was that the biggest blow was the widescreen format. I hated it more than I did the fact that Funimation didn't do shit about the problems from the UUE's they had quite obviously dropped in favor of this DVD. The lack of menus was another thing I didn't like at all. None at all, not just no Spanish menus but no menu at all. Just played from "Aperece Gohan" to "Una Alianza Poderosa" in episode order and without stopping. In order to veiw one like the last one you have to fast forward or use chapter ahead function. It sucks and it's another thing I don't like about this and this is why I am making this review. I want to get the word out about how this is not a good product and perhaps shed light on what Funi may do in the future. I have a good feeling that they might suddenly stop and discontinue this one too like the UUEs. I mean, do they have any masters beyond a certain point (like the Cell saga?) or what? Whatever it may be, I really don't care. I will be the few who aren't surprised when they hear that it's been discontinued (The Spanish DVDs, of course is what I mean by 'it') Enough of that, on with the other show:
==Saga de Vegeta «El Encuentro de Los Saiyajins» Ratings==
I. Video Quality:7
The video quality was as it was in the UUE's and was just as bad in the same places as them. Solemente Dios sabe (Only God knows) how many times this has been brought up. You probably can envision what I mean so I will not go into greater detail.
II. Audio: 8/9
The audio was the excellent Mexican dub. 'Nuf said here.
III. Price: This is just my personal opinion here just because I couldn't put a rating on price. All I can say is that it wasn't too much that I will return it now.
Now, if you have thought about buying this I won't stop you. You can make decisions on your own and use good judgement as you see fit. If reading my review has made you not want to buy it then that might be a smart thing to do. So, that's it. Mexico ha chingado por Funimation. (Mexico has been ****ed by Funimation) In retrospect, meditate on this: Your UUEs are now collector's items.

I was hoping for this release to not be bad. But alas you showed me the light. I really wanted to get one just so I would remember the awesome mexican dub from the days of yore. But, it looks like I would have to either go to my country and watch it there in TV and they are not even transmitting DBZ in Peru anymore. I guess I would have to get the Box set of the Spaniards releases. I guess I will have to get used to "Son Goanda" and to hear "vale" from time to time.
Damn you Funimation that is why I am not buying anything from you, since you mess up one of my favorite shows ever in a very despicable way.
I am going back to my raw ep. of Kotetsushin Jeeg and to peace my mind with the lasted volume of Buddha :P

Now, I don't want people to misunderstand me. All I am saying is that the Spanish DVDs released by Funimation are a spit in the face of the Mexican dub. The thing to do is to get the Ultimate Uncut Editions of what exist already. If you live outside of the areas where this has been sold, then you still have one other option. Buy them online if you have the ability to do so. All I wanted to do with this was help people to make intellegent decisions regarding the DVDs. If I helped one person, I know I have done somthing right.

I just got this today, I was going to put up some kind of dissection but it seems pretty useless.

Usually I put pics up of the menus but on this release there are no menu's. Yea... I guess it makes sense being there is only the Spanish dub, no subtitles and no other audio track. Also, the box art is like 97% the same as the UUC versions so theres nothing really new there. The quality of the video is the same as the season sets so nothing new there either.

So yea, it would be a pretty dull dissection. And also the Mexican over here pretty much said everything. Well, maybe not everything...
The video quality was as it was in the UUE's
Its actually how it was in the season sets. Here are 2 screen shots from the Spanish DVD...

I picked that picture of Goku falling off the cliff, cause whenever I see a still of that scene it looks as if Gohan was like "Fuck this" and just chucked Goku off the cliff.

Another failure to add to the list of FUNimation's Dragonball-related releases... :/

Question: does another company (besides FUNimation) release Dragonball Z in Spanish in Region 4?

Nope. From this review, this release is an extreme hack job. And here I thought FUNimation had hit rock-bottom.

I could swear I've heard that quote on your avatar somewhere before. Not sure where.

I really wish they hadn't put their fake widescreen on this release as well.
On hiatus.

VGCats. It's from a comic about MMORPG's (and a t-shirt, afterwards, that my avatar is from).

Jeez, you guys are perpetually unhappy, aren't you. It's not like they were marketing these Spanish DVDs to the people who read this message board.... If you don't like it, then don't buy it. Nobody is forcing you to get these DVDs. Does it really matter that you *have* to have every single first volume of DBZ on DVD? (And isn't this already covered in the forum rules?)

I repeat my question: are there any other publishers besides FUNimation that have the DBZ series on DVD in Region 4? I ask because maybe that company "did it right" and you can buy from them instead.

Oh, so they weren't marketing it to Spanish speaking fans, like our friend Bardock the Mexican? :P

Sure! There's Madman in Australia, who simply distributes FUNimation's version :P

No company has done an English-language version 'right' henceforth we're perpetually unhappy, because FUNimation and others seem completely incapable of breaking the cycle.

You nor I should have to pay for garbage if it's our only option.

I believe the one's BtM reviewed are the US releases of the Spanish language release. There was a different thread before this one that focused on the actual Mexican release. That one actually had English, Spanish, and Japanese with English subs. [not to mention menus...] It did however still use the Widescreen "remastered" transfer. I'd hardly call that "doing it right".
