I do that too. You do a sketch, scan, and use some sort of art program. I used to use Photoshop, but it has no stabilizer (made for really scratchy lines), so now I use Krita. If you're interested, Krita is free.

You can open the scanned image in Krita and add a layer over it (it might take some time and practice to learn it, but it's quite easy). In the new layer, trace the outline and get rid of the layer with the original sketch and you're left with a nice, crisp outline. I use a Microsoft Surface, so it's really easy but you can also use a drawing tablet for the computer (they could go for like $100). Then color it in (I use different layers under the outline layer for this).

...which involves Japanese wordplay, because *shrug* that's how I roll And because "メリークリザマス" looks and sounds infinitely better than the awkward English equivalent of "Merry Chrizamasu".

Decided to put Zamasu in an elf outfit because of his pointy elfish ears...he's clearly not satisfied with that decision

I used to use the pen tool in Photoshop, but quite honestly, I find that to be extremely time-consuming. I like Krita with the brush stabilizer because I ca just draw and not worry about doing lines and stuff. It saves me a ton of time. I know that it's grueling when you don't have a drawing tablet or touch screen with a pen.

I used to use the pen tool in Photoshop, but quite honestly, I find that to be extremely time-consuming. So far i like it, i've already painted Pikachu and the Dragon ball and it looks allright.
But i still have to improve, i can't wait to use different styles and effects, so again, thanks for the info.

Just FYI, Clip Studio/Manga Studio is better than SAI and Photoshop (and is a Japanese company who created this tool which is geared for this kind of work). It's kinda like both those programs combined and much more. Plus, recent updates allow for animation (which apparently anime companies have been using Clip Studio Industrial versions of the software to do so; I believe Space Dandy and Attack on Titan have used the program). One cool feature is the use of 3D models. If you are familiar with Paint Man--the program nearly all anime have used to colourize their works--is the same company who make Clip Studio.

Not to try to sound like a shill, but it's my favourite program thus far and they have 60-70% off deals every now and then.

I have the damndest time drawing hands and feet. It always gets me when someone just nails it. If I have reference, I get it, but without reference, it's terrible.

For the Pro, it's the normal price.

It's funny because the EX version is the full version and pro is really the standard. The EX version has been on sale for as low as 80 dollars due to the sale they had. But the Pro version is good enough if just doing illustrations and if you're a beginner.

I believe they have the differences between EX and Pro on their site.

Also, they might have a 60-70% off sale in the new year. People on Deviantart tend to have threads for the community as heads up. So you can buy the Pro version, and when the sale comes on, you can always upgrade later.

Their site also has tons of resources for free brushes and stuff like that. They also have tons of free downloads (from brushes, to files that you can explore done by professional artists to see how they did what they did) and lots of video tutorials as well.

But the program has everything you need. Good set of brushes from g-pen to water colours (plus all their free extra brushes they update nearly every week), 3D object references, perspective rulers/pens that can help you create landscapes to abstract designs. You can work in vector and raster (Photoshop is raster only; Flash/Animate pro is all vector). So, I suggest doing line work in vector because you can change the size, the smoothness, straighten the lines etc and then paint using a raster layer. Seriously, for the price, the pro and even the EX version at full price is a fantastic deal compared to its competitors. But if you pay attention you can purchase it for under 100 dollars.
