FUNi's official subs for Super, vs their subs in general.

Post by huzaifa_ahmed » Sun Dec 25, 2016 11:07 am

So as a general thing, FUNi, like most other anime studios, is much more of a licensor than they are a dubber. The shows are supposed to be & stay Japanese, from a business perspective, & unlike say games, dubs come extra. Now as a dub fan, maybe not for DB but still, Toei especially has taken ages to get this out, & it rather surprised me that FUNi has subs for this. If it's on CR, why is it also on FUNi's site? Aren't they a dub site at this point? Also, they're using names like "Krillin", "Shenron", & their entirely invented mistranslations-that-shall-not-be-named for the attack names. Steve Simmons' official subs on the discs have the actual names.

Now with something like Pokemon, which started out "localized" post-production when it first came over, then was produced with us in mind from the start...names dont bother me all that much. But DB's localization is for money, pretty much, & the old terms were really awful & misrepresentative. Anyhow, why this major discrepancy in their subs?

EDIT: As an example, WTF is *this*? Image

My guess is that Crunchyroll hired their own translator(s) for Super and came up with their own conventions for the terms that's mainly based on the dub. Funi probably just uses CR's translations to save time. The DVD subs will probably be updated with Steve's translation. At least I hope so.

None of you are right ; Toei is behind these subs.

Yeah, these translations were done in-house by Toei themselves. When FUNi releases the show on DVD and BD, it'll probably contain a redone subtitle track done by Steve Simmons. Though honestly, compared to a lot of Toei's other in-house translations, their Super subs are really not bad at all. I mean, okay, the dub-terms annoy me to no end, but at least they've got generally good English, unlike say, Sailor Moon Crystal, which bordered on unreadable at times.
