Re: Super Animation Catalogue 2.0 - Episode 72
One Piece Film Gold was a monster. Like Ajay said, Watanabe and Hayashi stole the show. Not to forget the 4 minute Shida scene was absolutely amazing. Probably my favorite in terms of production values after Hosoda Mamoru's Movie 6 and Film Z.
If any Dragon Ball project, whether it's movies or OVAs or specials whatever, it needs a change in the core staff. The main mostly old and people who are out of touch need to go or not be involved with the project at all. Then only Dragon Ball can hope of reaching One Piece's level.

I agree. It wasn't nothing like you could say "Wow this is spectacular!". But even though I'm not a OP fan, it was enjoyable.Mazingerdestro wrote:Hate to ruin it but the animation was nothing special. It felt like an amazing episode in terms of animation. -Episode 73-
I enjoyed everything except the transition of Gohan/Cocoa scene in the backstage to the roof, in the end. That was badly done.
I have to say I like how the dark outlines in characters designs are used like it was in this episode.
I hate Toma's style on going over the top, like he did in episode 4 and Fusion Reborn with Goten/Trunks scenes in Earth. Looks like cheap photoshop composition, because it doesn't fit with the background and the character stands out a lot.
However, the way they are used like in this episode are perfect for me.
Smooth, the character fits with the background and the style does it's job on showing character expressions just right.
As for the ending, I'm surprised its the same director from Yoka Yoka Dance ending, since I consider the visuals of that one to be the most original thing we ever got in a DB ending.
This time while I like the idea too, the execution was just lazy and they couldn't even bother to make the drawings look good. Looks like rough Tate.
Maybe it's because they have a new opening to worry about and/or they are just focused in the new arc, but I'm don't like what we got.
I also didn't like much the new song.
NEP looks fantastic. This probably is one of my favourite Great Saiyaman shots ever:

I agree, Gohan's expressions when bulma was explaining to the crew about the Great Saiyaman incident was amazing. They nailed it.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

Re: Super Animation Catalogue 2.0 - Episode 72
I wonder if the difference in quality for the 41 storyboard and the 54 storyboard are due to production improvements or if it just comes down to the individuals putting different amounts of detail in their storyboards. I know some of Z's storyboards were pretty much stick figures, while others were very detailed.
Re: Super Animation Catalogue 2.0 - Episode 72
I think it's because that episode had much better production time than #41. The final product was much better in #54.
Re: Super Animation Catalogue 2.0 - Episode 72
It's probably a little bit of both, but I think in 41's case, it really is a production issue. As RJ said, it's almost incomprehensible. It's like the poor guy had to scribble it out in an afternoon.ArchedThunder wrote:I wonder if the difference in quality for the 41 storyboard and the 54 storyboard are due to production improvements or if it just comes down to the individuals putting different amounts of detail in their storyboards. I mean, we only get to see four pages, and there are certainly similar pages to these in my storyboard for #16, but they're never usually used for auction preview images. They tend to pick the best ones. If this is all they could offer, then perhaps the rest is similarly messy.

Watching Film Gold got me angry. If Toei are capable of making something look THAT good then why hasn't Dragon Ball ever gotten that kind of treatment for a film?
I want a Dragon Ball movie to look that good. I would die from happiness if it were to happen.
That Shida cut at the start of the film blew my fucking mind.

Re: Super Animation Catalogue 2.0 - Episode 72
It's not that DB films do not get that kind of treatment from Toei, it's the staff(Yamamuro) who take away anything interesting from the film. ROF had couple of talented KA working on it, but they were all yamamuroed and some even complained about it.

Luckily Yamamuro's role in the series has been seemingly lessening, so hopefully the inevitable next movie is better. I remember one of the big wigs on the franchise said his dream was to do a CG movie, I wouldn't be surprised if they use the technology and staff from Kado to do that, which could be a good or a bad thing, but at least it wouldn't take any 2d animators from Super.
I wonder who is supervising the new opening, I hope it's someone unexpected.

I took a gander over t the Booru, and yeah the movie seems to be nothing but sakuga on sakuga. Definitely not on the "nothing special" you called it. I was just linked the shida sequence, hori ballsMazingerdestro wrote:

I was more impressed by the amount of lore and information gaining from that movie and the island.'
The car race, the villain's story, the presentation etc. were quite impressive.
However, animation was the last thing that I paid attention.
Maybe is due to the fact that op movies come so often and the animation feels the same that I wasn't impressed.
As for the toei is a machine comment
Not even close. they're actually really great at being unconventional and revolutionizing stuff. keep in mind you dont see a lot of the weird action we have now until people like Hosoda are made to direct Digimon which spreads to One Piece which creates the one, the only, NAOKI TATE!

Re: Super Animation Catalogue 2.0 - Episode 72
Going back to Toyotaro's interview, he did say that he was reliant on Toei for info when it came to the FT arc, and for the next arc it was going to be the other way around, and I think he was correct. Because at Jump Festa they showed his manga panels for the promotion of the next arc. Even though his manga is monthly and is still in the FT arc, I think he is already working on the next arc and taking notes from Toriyama.
Toei referenced his manga panels at the beginning of the U6 arc and it must have definitely helped them out during the storyboarding process. I think its going to be the same this time around, plus the 10 week filler episodes gap is definitely going to be beneficial as well. But the irony is that we are possibly going to see the events unfold in the anime first despite them being referenced from his manga panels.

As much as I love to praise people for their hard work in the animation industry, I still fail to find an excuse for the Tate hype. None of his work impresses me. I feel like he wants to innovate but lacks professionalism, leading to mixed reviews in his work. I consider animation as an illusion that turns some figures on a paper into living things. Animation should be capable of making you feel something for drawings by masking the fact that you watch drawings. In Tate's case that hasn't happened for me yet. I understand though why some enjoy his workA Man named RJ wrote:keep in mind you dont see a lot of the weird action we have now until people like Hosoda are made to direct Digimon which spreads to One Piece which creates the one, the only, NAOKI TATE!

Getting One Punch Man vibes from the episode 74 preview. Looks like they got some good animators too.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

It was more than disappointing, why didn't they even try to animate the ending? Not that other endings were animated a lot, but they still were okay, this one sounds bad and looks badBaggie_Saiyan wrote:This new ED was massively over hyped. Was kind of disappointed, sounds ayt. I don't like the new ED visuals either but you guys are overreacting . The song is actually good, try listening to it without the boring visuals. Also, they clearly rushed through this because this is just an ED they're busy with the next arc and its opening song. It's the DBS curse.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:I understand the notion of preserving animation but this was kind of ridiculous.Ki Breaker wrote:It was more than disappointing, why didn't they even try to animate the ending? Re: Super Animation Catalogue 2.0 - Episode 72
I think Tate is good at Supervising an episode than doing a Key Animation. Also if the schedule is good, maybe his work is better than he did on episode 2.Mazingerdestro wrote:As much as I love to praise people for their hard work in the animation industry, I still fail to find an excuse for the Tate hype. Episode 5 was rushed, but Naoki Tate was the only supervisor (considering that the episode had good moments other than Ken Otsuka). Now, that the schedule is (approximately) better than before. Maybe he can give us some nice stuff.
Example:
Episode 5

Episode 72

If the schedule of Super still incompatible with Tate key animations, then the best solution is just to correct them (just like Manabe did).
EDIT: Sorry, if the post just got edited several times. I didn't know there's a Preview button there. I'm still learning.
