I grew up on the dub, and I never gave the Japanese version a chance. That is, until Super came out a while back. I now actually prefer the Japanese VA's now. So ironic, but that's just how I feel.

"Superman" is simply used in this case because it seems to be the point of reference that most people use to point out moments in the dub where Goku cares more about others than himself.

Ah, I see. I don't really use the term the same way that most do. Personally, I usually use that term for the really corny and overly heroic lines they gave him and only those. Stuff like "sword of injustice" and "hope of the universe". Things like that. Him not showing all of his selfishness in the dub doesn't necessarily make him "Superman". It's just a less faithful version of the character. My bad, I was using the term a different way than what you meant.

One line doesn't make it Kai level? Come on man that's harsh it was a pretty insignificant line too he was talking to Goten. Hell in Kai his sacrifice to Cell was more "heroic" than the JPN so again saying it is below Kai is pretty harsh. These moments will happen time to time but nothing will be as significant as "I am hope".

Yeah, I agree. It really was only that one line that was an tick for me. Unlike others, I actually didn't mind Chi-Chi and Goten's voices.

That said, I did enjoy the Buu Kai dub tons more. Kyle Hebert's Gohan is my favorite now (besides Nozawa).

27 more weeks until the retelling is over! If episode 1 is ant indication the dub cast will at least make it enjoyable, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Ep 1 despite seeing the episode numerous times in JPN. Plus we get to hear Ayres again so there's that!

That's more than half a year. But it won't stop me from enjoying the dub, since I was planning to rewatch the show anyways.

Just rewatched the dub few more comments, finally hearing Doc in a non Kai setting was another his "Last time on Dragon Ball Z" showed us what could have been back then. As Geekdom101 mentioned in his review the mixing of the audio was pretty great too. Even in that mini training montage Sean's scream and grunting sounded it pretty impressive can't wait for when we get to the big fights. Tipton was pretty great, Goten sounded fine he sounds as young as Nowaza makes him. Of course Rager killed it as Satan. Sabat's time next week! He got one heck of a follow up after impressive performances but I'm sure he'll deliver.

No major issues with the dub or it painting Goku in a more "Superman" style, I'm used to those happening in the English dub.

I am worried about Cynthi Cranz's Chi-Chi voice, though. I think age has taken its toll on her voice and she can't scream like she used to. Thankfully Chi-Chi doesn't do too much screaming in DBS.

I wish they did the next episode previews after the end of the dub. Hearing next time after the episode was over did get a lot of people hype up for the next episode.

Personally, I don't mind the lack of NEPs because all they do for me is spoil the next episode, but I do find it a tad odd that Toonami decided not to include them. It's not like they were taking up that much time.

Usually, if things get cut it's the company that cuts them, not Toonami

In this case it's definitely Toonami as they've cut NEPs and OP/EDs on other shows not an isolated incident for them.

Has Future Trunk's voice actor improved in Xenoverse 2? I remember people saying his voice sounded pretty bad in the previous game.

I hope his performance isn't too bad once they get to the Goku Black arc.

Trust me, Eric Vale is a completely capable voice actor. Watch the latest One Piece releases if you need proof.

I'm not seeing how that's Superman-like If you wanna pin that to anything, it'd be a stereotypical shonen hero line.

The most common point of criticism regarding FUNimation's earlier interpretation of the character was that they wrote him as somebody who cared about protecting other people, and not fighting for the sake of fighting. In other words, the common beef was that he needed to sound more selfish in the dub. Whenever he didn't sound selfish and voiced concern about protecting others (or lecturing about morality) in the dub, it seems that people called those moments "Superman moments."

So, if we want to forgo the use of the name Superman, I would re-phrase what I said earlier to simply indicate that Goku is not entirely selfish, not even in the Japanese version.

I think a lot of people are just triggered by anything that makes Goku seem like a good guy who cares about people, even though he literally is exactly that in every single version of the story! I understand, though, it gives them flashbacks of the old Z Dub.

Agreed completely. I think, because FUNimation re-wrote Goku as more of a "selfless superhero"-type character for the DBZ dub, some fans have gotten overzealous in an attempt to "course-correct" the wrong image of Goku that some people have, and go overboard in trying to portray him as completely selfish. This in turn makes them twitch with bad flashbacks whenever he says something in the newer dubs that's even remotely virtuous. The truth of the matter is that, while he's closer to being selfish, the character really is in between these two extremes. He doesn't completely fall over to either side.

You guys do know that Super on Toonami only has the 1st 27 episodes only. Once that's done, there's probably gonna be a break or some time before Toonami gets the Universe 6 Tournament & the Future Trunks / Zamasu arc.

Why do you thin that? It wasn't the case for Kai, and we know we didn't have that beforehand. There's literally no reason they should have to wait. Also, this is the first time I'm hearing about them supposedly only having the first 2 arcs, and I'm skeptical. Although I didn't like the dub anyway, so no skin off my back.
