Let me put it this way, If they were going to have someone draw quality new DB manga, it was either going to be Toyble or Jijii. For whatever reason, Toyble was chosen.Ki Breaker wrote:Never heard of Jijii, but from what I saw from my research, he seems pretty capable.

Like I said in another thread, Jiji did hentai and traces. They probably didn't want to associate with someone like that.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:Let me put it this way, If they were going to have someone draw quality new DB manga, it was either going to be Toyble or Jijii. Though the hentai thing shouldn't be a big deal right now, since Jiji has deleted all of it and Ooishi also did hentai before she was hired. I'm guessing the reason he hasn't been picked to do any official work yet is the tracing.

Toyotaro traces out the ass, I doubt they'd have a problem if Jijii used the same techniques. It's likely that Jijii would have gone by a different name, just like Toyble. Obviously, none of us know the details of how Toei found Toyotaro, but I doubt getting Jijii on board would have been impossible.Doctor. wrote:Though the hentai thing shouldn't be a big deal right now, since Jiji has deleted all of it and Ooishi also did hentai before she was hired. Toyotaro does homages. Most of the scenes that he steals from the manga are drawn in a different angle and the anatomy is drawn in his own style. Jiji completely traces over them.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:Toyotaro traces out the ass, I doubt they'd have a problem if Jijii used the same techniques. Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
Young Jijii's art style is certainly quite refined and far more detailed, making what he draws all the more aesthetically appealing and pleasing. But at the same token Toyotaro art style has come a long way and feels representative of how Toriyama's art style evolved from the Majin Boo arc to what it is now. I think the main issue with Young Jijii's art style is that it feels very stuck in how characters were drawn from the Namek/Freeza arc to the Android/Cell arc. But to be fair, the art-style during that period was great, and arguably Toriyama at his very finest during his run with Dragon Ball.

I love the way he draws ssb aura is so detailed and I got a question does Toyo have a Twitter like jijimicah007 wrote:I like the manga but I wish it had more detailed art. Toyo is doing his job well but I'd pay to see this style for a chapter or two by the below artist.

It's based off of the Super Saiyan aura of the early Android Arc, which was my favorite iteration, although it is a bit more curvy. Maybe once they toss Toyotaro aside, we'll get some interesting official material from Jijii. Not that I want Toyotaro gone yet, because I like the work he's doing for now.The gr wrote:I love the way he draws ssb aura is so detailedmicah007 wrote:I like the manga but I wish it had more detailed art. Maybe they showed Toriyama both Toyotaro and Young Jijii work and he chose Toyotaro?

-Viz Volume 1 cover-
- I don't like the new logo. What's the problem of using a japanese word on the cover of a japanese product?!
- The back cover look cool, but if that means we don't get the rest of Toyotaro's cover art it's a no from me. Unless they put it inside.
- While this one is not Viz fault, I'm still disappointed they didn't bother to ask Toyotaro to draw one final chapter to wrap up his ROF version and include it here. One monthly size chapter was enough to do the job and with that the transition between arcs would be much better.
-Japanese sales-
I was curious about Volume 2 sales, so I just made a quick research and looks like Volume 2 sold more than Volume 1.
Volume 1
Estimate total copies: 30,361
Volume 2
Estimate total copies: 96,274
The numbers are low, but since this is just a promotional manga it would be more fair comparing to other promotional mangas.
Skip arcs, rush stuff, and sometimes have the anime ahead won't do anything good for the sales.
Let's see if Volume 3 breaks the 100k barrier. FT Trunks and Black are the hype!

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
I think Jiji is incredibly overrated. While I do like Jiji's art, I can't stand how people constantly express that they wish he was doing the manga instead of Toyotaro. Jiji wouldn't even be my second choice to work on Super...I'd prefer dragongarowlee. There's something about the facial expressions in Jiji's characters that seems off...it's partially that he draws noses too close to mouths, but there's something else that turns me off. Maybe it's something in the eyes. Also, his original characters are hideous.
I am extremely happy with everything Toyotaro has put out regarding the Super manga. His art style is simple and clean; it's a nice compromise between Toriyama's Boo era, Toriyama's modern style, and something new. His fights are interesting while still being easy to follow. Not only does he represent Goku better than any fan artist (in terms of personality and physical expressions), he draws Beerus and Whis in a more expressive and distinctive way than anyone who's taken up the task. While it seems implied that Toriyama may have chosen Toyotaro because he "might be the closest to my style" (or whatever Tori said), there's more to being the successor to the Dragon Ball manga than being copy the way characters look. Characters need to emote properly. Comedic and dramatic timing and framing are important. You need to be able to express action in a clean and straightforward manner. You need to keep things interesting with minimal "fat". It's just as Toriyama says: "Well, maybe there are people who can imitate my pictures, but not many artists can pull off an entire chapter the way you can! Your storyboards are really tight!"
Aside form his artistic ability, I'm convinced that Toyotaro was chosen in part because of his original stories, his faithfulness to existing characters, and his ability to remember details Toriyama might not. Toyble's AF includes an evil Shin-jin as well as a multi-Saiyan ritual; two things that were deemed acceptable enough to be included in Super. He balances seriousness and humor well. He somehow made me care interested in filler material, GT characters, and Broli.
In summary, Toyotaro is awesome and we're lucky to have him. Nobody comes close to Toriyama, but as far as I'm concerned, Toyotaro has proven he's the next best thing.

The only thing I like more about Jiji is the flowy hair. His art style is worse in every other way imo. I know he's representative of Saiyan Saga art style but I prefer the Boo arc's art style.

Can I ask why? Or rather, how, because I can't think of a single aspect of the Boo Arc that warrants calling it a better style. Even if it was, while Toyotaro's art resembles it more than Jijii's, Toyo certainly isn't basing his style off of that part of the series.kinisking wrote:The only thing I like more about Jiji is the flowy hair. But I'm not even concerned with that last part, because it's incomprehensible that someone could prefer the Boo Arc style, it's the very embodiment of okayishness.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super (Manga)" Official Discussion Thread
Saying the boo arc art style is okay seems a bit hyperbolic to me if you like the saiyan saga art style. Although it's different, I don't think it's THAT different. Actually, I might take that back. But still, if I was a newcomer to the series I'd appreciate both art styles. The boo saga art style has a more angular touch which I prefer. I don't like how everything is so round in the saiyan saga.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:Can I ask why?
