Australian/Madman (R4) Dragon Ball Box Sets: Review

Post by Kula » Tue Jun 05, 2007 4:35 pm

Image

Here's some information about both of the Madman box sets for Dragon Ball. They are PAL/Region 4. They collect all 11 of the individually released DB box sets available from Madman.
Here are a few more pictures of the boxes...
Left sides
Right sides
Backs

The boxes are made of thick card, and very nice looking.

There are 2 discs to each case, and the episode summaries are printed on the inside of the sleeve.

The episodes are 4:3, uncut and have Japanese & English audio (including the 'Saga Of Goku' set). Movie 1 (included in the first set) is cut and English only.

There has been a lot of talk about poor NTSC > PAL encoding concerning these sets. I'm currently up to episode 44 and I haven't seen any problems
I've ripped a 3 minute, 100% quality clip in .vob format that I'll upload later.

The first disc of 'Fortune Teller Baba' has Japanese subtitles only for all episodes except 73, which has dub only subtitles. This mistake was present on the previous issue of this disc and hasn't been corrected.

The sets retail for around $99(Aus), but they're a little cheaper if you're buying them from outside Australia.

Collection 2
EzyDVD

Overall I'd say these sets are worth a look, considering that the US releases are around $30 each and getting harder to find.

Looks nice. Really nice, in fact.

See, FUNimation, this is what a BoxSet looks like. :)

What dub is the first movie, is it the original Ocean cast? Because I think I remember the first 13 episodes of that new set being in FUNi's redub of the episodes.
I love humans, always seeing patterns in things that aren't there.

See, FUNimation, this is what a BoxSet looks like.
The R1 DVD art is almost exactly the same. Sure, it would be nice to have a cool looking box to put them in but, we never got "The Saga Of Goku" so maybe FUNimation is just waiting on Kidmark?

Edit: Looking at the image of the back of the box, I gotta say it looks a little off. There is one set that has the older looking DragonBall art and the other is a newer drawing of Goku (with the Dragon from DBZ no less). When you put them side by side they look like two different sets. :? Thats how I usually display my DVD box sets, with the backs facing out so there is some nice art to look at.

I bought the first set back in March and I love it. I own the R1 Versions of all the sagas in the second set. I started buying them late and had trouble finding some of the earlier sets (Tournament and Red Ribbon specifically). Was just easier to buy the R4 Set. I wish Funi would have the empty boxes for sale like some of the other collections.

I have a question. I´m currently only missing 2 volumes, the tournament saga and piccolo daimaio first part. I´m wondering if all the menu music has the japanese music as funimation cds, so I can ripped them. Is it like buying funimation dvd´s ( except the madman trademark part)?

Regarding the episode without directly translated subtitles from the Baba set... Was that also a mistake on the American release?

I was lucky enough to pick up the remaining Region 1 FUNi DB sets I needed a few months at a used movie/music store.

The only set I'm missing is "The Saga of Goku", so I figure I may as well get the Region 4 release, since it doesn't like FUNi is going to release this set in the US unless they do a "remastered" boxset. Plus, my PC can play PAL DVDs as well as NTSC.

Actually, Looking at my R1 release of the Baba set, it has both the dubtitles and directly-translated subtitles.

Relating to the topic: congrats, Austrailia! You guys actually got all of DB uncut in it's entirety. :D

Eh,the credits and episode previews are missing though. =/

Anyway it's only the Saga of Goku that wasn't released in the U.S,this is due to some bull crap licensing issues.

Hey, just wondering if the DVDs are only Region 4 or if they are region 2 as well in the same way Funimation's US DVDs are regions 1,2 and 4. I think I remember seeing some of the older Madman releases as being region's 2 and 4. Hope these ones are as i do not own a multi-region player and would quite like to import these to the UK.

The discs are Region 4 only. Most DVD players can be made region free with the use of a simple code...

http://www.dvdcodes.net/

If you have a PS2, you can buy a disc for it that can temporarily change its region code.

This is great! I think I've decided that I'm only going to buy the Australian Dragon Ball DVD's from now on.

Not only are they cheaper than the ones distributed in the U.S. (where I reside), but they also have the Emperor Pilaf Arc as well.

Nothing. XD

":P" is kind of a tongue poking smiley. If I was happy about it I'd be using ":D".

(Also, Death-T eh? I'm assuming that's a reference to Seto Kaiba's Theme Park of Death?)

Um,about that... I would find it hard to beleive that the problem simply doesn't exist.Because someone posted pictures over at the FUNimation boards.I wish I could post a link... But have you seen anything yet ? And if you have, are the problems that noticable,or disturbing ? And um,what about that -short- clip ? I'd appreciate if you posted it.

I don't think he was saying that there was no problem, only that it's not as noticeable as some people make it out to be.

Hello,

I do own these sets, and I agree: it's not as noticeable as some people make it out to be !
