Bad Dub rendering or Prophetic wording of what really happen

I know that the Dub prefered to use the terms "send to the next demension" or "next world" or whatever. But aren't these the correct terms for what happens to the characters in the series?

Most of the characters are either either seen or refered to be at Yema's station or HFIL or whatever. And a lot of characters are seem again dead.

So, can this really be a bad thing?

It is probably correct, but the problem is that they say "kill" in the japanese version I think.

I think the problem really stemmed from their *obvious* side-stepping of what was really happening by using these absurd phrases and paintings, essentially insulting the intelligence of anyone over the age of six that happened to be watching it.

It's correct that it's pretty much referred to as something like "The Next World" (usually あの世 ano yo, or "afterworld"). The thing is, the Japanese version also tosses around words like "death" and "kill" (and "HELL" on the shirts ) right alongside.

So do with that as you will.

I know that lot of people disagreed with how it was handled, but were they insulted by it?

Around the time that Dragonball Z hit Cartoon Network, I was really starting to get into anime or atleast reconizing that some of the animated programs that I was viewing were of Japanese origins. I forget where or when I learned that a lot of times dialog and themes may be changed to make it more approachable to a target audience. It wasn't till recently, the last year or so, while going to different forums, especially here, that I've been properly inform of the extent that it has been done. I've accepted as something that had to be done at the time to put it on accessible American television and to keep it there. I would compare it to swears, profanity and "unliked words" (for a lack of a better term) that gets beeped out of song lyrics on the radio.

Absolutely not. Like you said, they had to dance around the topic of death, and that was pretty much what they were stuck with. It's not really what I would have liked to hear, but in my eye, it made sense. If you want dub lines that are actually insulting to the intelligence, look no further than the infamous 'parachutes' line.

You know, the weird thing is, I didn't realize it was a death coverup when I first started watching the show. I thought it was an alternate way of saying "go to hell!", so I thought they were actually being edgy to be saying something along those lines This probably happened because the first stuff I saw was from the Namek saga when Vegeta was killing Freeza's goonies and telling them to go to the next dimension, and since he was a badass it seemed like a badass saying. I guess if I'd seen the earlier stuff first I might have realized that all of the good guys were also being sent to that other dimension, and therefore it couldn't mean Hell.

So... urm... am I the only person who was actually tricked into believing that death and the next dimention were separate? Though it was clear that some characters actually died, and others had this whole "to the next dimention" effect... so I considered them two separate things that were present in the series (I didn't realize until the podcast episode that the Farmer actually spoke after his death in the dub... :O). It seemed clear that people like Recoome, Raditz, Burter, Zarban, Dende, Vegeta, to name a few were actually dying, while the effects when Jheese died seemed similar enough to me to those at Yamcha's asploding to warrant considering him sent to the next dimention (my father was quick to argue otherwise despite this argument. ^^).
I don't know when I realized that to be wrong... probably around the Freeza fight since it had all been dropped.

I've always liked the "next dimension" phrasing. It's far from insulting and pretty damn obvious what they mean. Especially if you've already seen the show and therefor know that the afterlife is treated a lot like another dimension. I've always viewed it as another one of those little clever cover ups like the HFIL.

Seasons 1 and 2, up through when Goku lands on Namek. I didn't mean Saban was responsible for everything you heard in that dub, just censorship and the whole avoiding-the-topic-of-death thing.

Yeah. Saban was 100% responsible for it being Sunday when Nappa and Vegeta arived, for supplying those pilots with parachutes, and for characters to go on vacation in the next dimension when they died.

Sometime when more than one company is involved things can be not so easy to do. For example, I heard 4Kids dubbed the infamous Porygon episode of Pokemon and removed the offending flashes that made such a ruckus, but Nintendo wouldn't let them air it.

Lucky Canadians. We didn't get that at all, I think. Didn't watch the show at first until my sis and friends introduced me to it.
