Poses for ki-based attacks

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Poses for ki-based attacks

Post by Pickle_Jar » Sat Jan 21, 2017 1:09 am

All right, so, we know just about every ki-based attack usually involves specific poses, right?

You know Piccolo is gonna deliver a Makankosappo by his pose.

You know Goku is about to throw a Kamehameha by his pose.

You know Vegeta is about to do a Final Flash by his pose.

You know Paikuhan(Pikkon to some) is about to do Thunder Flash Attack by the movements he makes first. (I love the power up for that move btw :D )

Ever wonder why? Obviously the real life answer is "it looks cool and makes each person's attacks unique!" That's great and all, but I believe it serves an in-universe purpose too.

My guess is they shape their bodies to concentrate and mold their ki as they build it up for an attack. It's like using different sprinkler attachments on a hose to get various water spray patterns. I like to think ki follows the path of least resistance like wind or water. Attack postures or movements create resistance until it's released on an opponent, and I'm guessing a fighter will intuitively know when an attack is "ready" to fire.

Of course, these postures can be modified if necessary-- like Gohan's one-armed Kamehameha against Cell.

I even think the ridiculous amounts of screaming that goes into powering up certain attacks actually serves the purpose of keeping one's ki under control until it's time to release it.

What do you think of this theory?

Each and every pose helps the specific attack's potency..
In real martial arts, we use different forms for even simple things like kicking and punching, all those poses are though out and developed to get the maximum desired effect form The attack..
It's also a norm to scream when doing a powerful attack, that helps in increasing the attacks power and scaring your opponent, if he isn't conditioned that is..

The amount of increase by screaming is actually quite substantial, but technically it's not screaming per say, we breathe out real fast and In sync with our attacks, a puch for example..

If it's internal energy ( ki is the extreme version ) harnessing, it's important to remain quite though, calm body and mind is required to perform using the internal energy..
Which ia not what goku does, so that maybe is something Saiyan biology related

Off topic, but from how you're describing this... Do you know martial arts!?!? That's really cool, what's your belt?

Very true, but I've seen everyone scream to power up. Some are a bit louder about it than others. :D

I'm not a martial artist, but I know the "kiai" is important for focusing. Perhaps the power up yells and screams are supposed to be scary. I saw a dub somewhere on Youtube that wasn't in English, but the yell was so hilariously bad that I almost died of embarrassment for the voice actor.
