Swearing in the dub...
Swearing in the dub...
OK, so I noticed that thenewly released Funimation Boxsets include curse words every now and then.
I wonder if anyone knows whether or not the Pseudo-swears such as blast, darn, heck, gosh and crud will be removed from the newer seasons and replaced with more believeable sounding words.
Another question I have is just how much swearing is in the Uncut Funimation DVDs that were released before all the Ultimate Uncut stuff came into play.
Thanks guys

Ultimate Uncut episodes: "Damn/Dammit", "Hell" (in both literal and figurative contexts), "Piss/Pissed" (in the "piss off" context), and "Bastard" are all obviously used numerous times; enough that I don't care to count.
DBZ series (not counting Ultimate Uncut eps): One "Ass" - Said by Hercule in a Fusion Saga episode. "Hell", in the literal context, is also said when needed references to the underworld occur.
DBZ movies:
DBZ movie 7 - Two Ass(es), one Damn.
DBZ movie 9 - One Hell (figurative context).
DBZ movie 12 - Various Hell uses in the literal context.
The Ocean versions of DBZ movies 1-3 also have various swears properly translated, which were unfortunately stripped away in the FUNimation 2005-06 redubs. An Easter-egg "Damn" is in the Curse of the Blood Rubies movie as well, snuck in by Oolong's VA as he falls from Yamcha's desert wall. There's a few others in original DragonBall's dub as well, one instance being a man Tien searches for a Dragonball asking "Dragonball, what the hell is that?"
GT: At least one "Dammit" by Bebi-Vegeta as he's reverting from Golden-Oozaru, as well as various uses of "Hell" in the literal context in the Super 17 saga and last episode.
Hopefully all that helps.

I can recall one use of "Damn" in the FUNi redub of movie 2. When the Genki-dama strikes Dr. Uiro, he exclaims "Damn you, Goku!" right before he explodes. Can't remember anything about movie 3, but yeah, movie 1 was completely stripped of all the swears.Conan the SSJ wrote:The Ocean versions of DBZ movies 1-3 also have various swears properly translated, which were unfortunately stripped away in the FUNimation 2005-06 redubs.
But based on what FUNi has redubbed in the season sets so far, I think they'll insert a few swear words into their revised scripts, but not many. FUNimation seems to be concentrating less on fixing dub errors and more on revising parts of the script that people don't care about at all. We might hear some swears by Vegeta, Kuririn, or Piccolo, but I doubt they'll give Goku or Gohan anything like that to say.

Ah, my mistake. To be honest, I couldn't even really sit through all of movie 2's redub, the music treatment was just SOOO fucking HORRIBLE in every sense of the word, not to mention one glimpse at Sean Schemmel's icebreaking "Kayoken" in comparison to Mr. Kelamis' fantastic version makes me wanna kick Schemmel in the balls for doing that scene such pathetic justice. Also, the music that replaces "I love Piccolo-san" literally made me come two seconds from barfing had I not stopped the DVD. It was just such a fucking horrible random, Spanish-type retarded piece of music that had NO place...just like every other sound of BGM in this redub Nathan Johnson randomly placed "This here, that there, now I'm all finished in only two seconds; a-hyuk!". My God, I wonder if EX/Mike would actually sit through this movie's redub and not bash his skull into a wall if someone paid him a Ben Franklin. >>;;MagicBox wrote:I can recall one use of "Damn" in the FUNi redub of movie 2. Sorry for the rant! Must be the whole issue that I like the Pioneer/Ocean dub of movie 2 even more than the Japanese version that gets me so worked up about how FUNi's redub sucks. ;p

I believe it's the episode where Vegetto defuses inside Buu, episode 273 (edit-version count 258), or it may be 274 (259). After Vegeta and "Kakarrot" screw around Buu's insides, Buu has to take an enormous #2 and changes a boulder into a (ready for this?) porter-toilet. He does his business while Hercule and Dende lurk outside it, evidently ready to make an attack. Buu's "fumes" knock them out rather comically, once Hercule wakes up from it, he proudly proclaims "Where is he, that toxic ass can't finish me!"SonEric84 wrote:Conan the SSJ wrote:DBZ series (not counting Ultimate Uncut eps): One "Ass" - Said by Mr. Satan in a Fusion Saga episode.
Do you happen to know which episode that's in? I watched the whole saga not too long ago and I don't remember hearing that.

Thanks, I'll have to go back and watch for that. By "edited" I'm assuming you meant dub episode count as opposed to japanese?

Pikkon: "Darn you, you stupid stinking barrier! Blacked out wall, I hate you!! Trash heap!!!" Along those lines.knuckle9 wrote:How was the scene in Movie 12 handled with all the swaering and insults?
FUNi have absolutely no reason to redub the movies. The ONLY movie we should expect a redub out of is original DB movie 1, Curse of the Blood Rubies, and even that has to wait for the issue with Lion's Gate to be settled. If anything, we'll probably get detail-decreased box-sets with FUNi's new wide-screen brand and the option for the dubs w/t Japanese BGM, dunno if there'd be even minor line redubbing like in Season 1's release. Anyway, even if new sets for the movies do come out under FUNi's "Remastered, no compromises, original film masters, skateboards!!" brand, I'm just sticking to my original DVDs.knuckle9 wrote:So are we expecting the movies to be redubbed as well and released as part of the boxsets.
Hopefully they will, so they can fix some of the insanely annoying goofy pseudo swear words, and perhaps include a "Dub with Japanese music" feature which I'm really fond of personally

If it was in the context of referring to a donkey, then it'd be "jackass". Buu just took a shit that had fumes capable of knocking both Hercule and Dende unconscious and Hercule afterwards refers to "toxic", obviously meaning he's referring to either Buu's posterior or Buu himself. C'mon, this is the uncut version, why wouldn't FUNi take a little chance with the writing? Maybe if it were a 4Kids dub, it'd be an obvious donkey context.Godo wrote:In the Mr.Satan part, when Buu goes to the toilet...
Seriously, "ass" can't be much of a swearword? You may think of the butt, but doesn't "ass" mean donkey too? So it should be the same as Freeza calling someone a monkey.
So I think they meant donkey.

Now that the redubbing is complete and Funimation is just doing "selective redubbing" for some characters, I'm not sure if there are going to be a whole lot more script changes. Any scenes where redubbed characters are talking to non redubbed characters will likely have to stay pretty much the same so the conversations will still make sense. But it's possible that they might change lines where redubbed characters like Vegeta say 'darn' or 'heck' to stronger equivalents, though I don't recall them adding any swears for him in the redubbed season 3 episodes (the biggest difference I noticed is that they dropped his "Mr. Hotpants" line to Krillin).
There's no telling when the selective redubbing is going to end....I think they're just trying to get through the period where the voices were the roughest, and may stop doing it by the end of the Freeza saga (there's no evidence for this, but I'm just thinking of how much effort they want to put into these sets, given the shoddiness).

They dropped "Mr. Hotpants"?!
I adored that cheesy line. It sounded so wrong coming from Vegeta yet amusing at the same time.
This is exactly why I think they should have one "original" dub soundtrack in addition to the "revised" one and the Japanese original.
On hiatus.

Since we are on this subject. In the Super Android 13 movie, #13 starts off by using the word ass. After about saying it twice he started using butt. Did Funimation have some sort of ass quota or something?
