I'm glad we had this conversation. I never really looked at death in fictional stories the way you have until now. Now that I think about it, death scenes usually don't get to me as much as other sad scenes too. It probably is the reasons you mentioned.

They probably drank tea all day or watched Godtube. I doubt Zamasu would do...intimate things...with Black, considering Black is in a mortal body. That probably disgusts Zamasu. Besides, Future Zamasu and Black have merely a professional relationship. Zamasu himself stated that Black is not his ally or friend, just someone who shares his ideals and thus works in close contact with.

Chibi Goku meeting his Jii-chan (Grandpa Gohan) with Nozawa's soulful performance really stimulated my lacrimal glands. Goku's pure love towards his Jii-chan with his watery eyes, frantic hugs & above all else showing his Jiichan the 4-star relic DB (the SINGLE inheritance which became key to Goku's adventurous journey) were just too much to handle.....

A close second was Gohan going SSJ2 in Bojack Unbound

More than the powerup itself, Gohan's (essentially Nozawa) dialogues of his Otousan saving him, telling him to protect Chikyuu before belting out screams from the depths of hell & finally to not forgive them (Bojack & co) actually produced tears...at its sheer magnificence & spine-tingling moment.

I agree for the most part, but I've seen short videos that were emotionally compelling.

Oh, me too. I love short film. They generally have to make different moves to be affecting than something written like the Trunks special does, though, with its standard narrative approach. It's just too straight-forward a "let's try to set up this character interaction, have some action, and have the master die within thirty minutes" type of thing.

I'll also offer that it's kind of cliche. Master sacrifices himself; his lone student is sad. We understand intellectually that it's a downer, but ... There isn't anything in those scenes really pulling at the unique relationship between Gohan and Trunks as characters. It's why something as simple as Gohan's good-bye to him in Super feels more affecting. It's unexpected and unique to their relationship. That'll always feel more real and more capable of catching you off guard than an expected narrative movement like his death in the Trunks special.

DBZ doesn't really have a lot of moments that make you cry. It's emotionally gripping at times, but that's different from making you cry. Toriyama is just good at building tension and suspense even though you know how it will end. I will also say after I finished the Manga, I felt saddened, like how it's a simple story but you really grew with the cast of characters.

The most emotional pull that I've ever had from the series was when I was watching the final episode of Z on Toonami and I knew it was the end. Yeah, GT was coming, but it felt like the end of a long journey. I followed DBZ since it was in syndication. I saw every episode on Toonami over and over and over again. Z-Day, Midnight Run, Rising Sun, the Saturday run. I watched Dragon Ball on Toonami, etc. I recorded every episode on my VCR and must have watched them so many times, that the tapes must have been tissue thin. I'll never forget 9/11 happening a few episodes into the Other World Tournament arc, so I lived through the most significant and historic event in my lifetime with DBZ. Something about watching that last episode brought out some strong emotion. I didn't physically cry, but after the episode was over, it was this strange moment of silence where I almost said my goodbyes to the series. Little did I know that I'd experience so much more with the series through the games, getting the releases, watching the Japanese version, and getting into the manga.

Another emotional moment that I has was in 2005 or 2006. At that point, I collected a couple of boxed sets of Z, but stopped. I hadn't seen DBZ in a while and caught it on a Saturday (and Toonami looked really weird since the last time that I saw it). It was the episode where Tenshinhan, Kuririn, and Piccolo were looking for Cell. The episode itself wasn't anything special, but I told myself that I freaking love this series and I will finish collecting every episode of it -- and I did, many times over.

Bolding is mine for emphasis. Oh geez, me too, both with 9/11 and the series ending. I was so messed up by 9/11 that I tried comforting myself by imagining the people who died were the audience members at the Otherworld tournament. I know, it's ridiculously childish, but...it helped me wrap my head around the scope of the tragedy.

Vegeta's deaths, as said by another poster, were pretty rough. I kinda got spoiled about Piccolo sacrificing himself for Gohan, so that was more of a "oh geez that's gotta hurt" response.

The part that got me bad was Imperfect Cell blowing a hole through Piccolo's stomach. I still can't tell you how relieved I was when it turned out he survived, I really thought he was a goner there.

I haven't watched much of GT. I kind of quit it when I saw Piccolo blow up with planet Earth to prevent the Black Star Dragon Balls from getting used again because that upset me way too much.

Super nailed me when Piccolo jumped in front of Gohan to save him from Freeza. The way he just falls over lifeless with no words or anything is kinda brutal. I don't even care that he gets wished back like it's nothing, seeing my favorite characters get hurt or die in a series (even if it's multiple times!) gets to me. I'm a very emotional person.

This is gonna sound really odd, but the only aspect of the series that's ever made me cry is the music, as opposed to specific story moments. It's just so damn beautiful all around and fills me with a sense of nostalgia somehow. I didn't grow up with the original score for any of the three series', but Shunsuke Kikuchi's music on it's own can be very moving at times, and the older sound brings me back to the late 80's and early 90's. I also love the title and end theme songs that didnt come from Kikuchi. "Detekoi Tobikiri Zenkai Power!", and "Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku" are my top tear jerkers. I just feel like a kid again listening to these tracks.

I've never actually cried, but each time a series ends it brings me close. Even DB, even though DBZ happens literally right after.

Also, when the new movies and Super were announced, new canon content for the first time in nearly 20 years.
