Broly: canonizing a misconception
Broly: canonizing a misconception
There's one thing that's bothered me about Broly for a long time now. The hair color issue.
It was very heavily implied that the greenish tint is a leftover from the effects of the mind control crown, which when still active, turned Broly's hair dark cyan instead of gold when he went Super Saiyan. Some even refer to that state as "Restrained Super Saiyan" or whatever. But at the end of Movie 8, Broly's hair and aura revert to standard, normal gold, the effects of the crown having faded entirely. Movie 10 preserves this status, with no greenish tint ever present.
Yet all the games that have Broly have his hair greenish, sometimes exaggerating the greenish tint to the point where it looks actually green. Broly's SSj3 form in the Raging Blast series has his hair neon green, not just blonde with a green shade. Judging by the background that the movies established, it should be the other way around. SSj3 is the very opposite of "restrained", so why?
Why are the game makers elevating a notion that has clearly been discarded by the movie makers themselves? Why are they preserving something that should be gone, just to make the character more distinct? Why such a large part of the community actually thinks the greenish color is intrinsic to the LSSj transformation(s)? Why, why, why?

Re: Broly: canonizing a misconception
It's less about sticking to in-universe reasoning and more desperately wanting to create something that's different and unique looking while still looking exactly like what came before it so they can sell you nostalgia while it's in the guise of a new product.

Because it is and soon you will see it... not even talking that there was never said or hinted the green tint of LSSJ has to do with the mind control device.Saturnine wrote:There's one thing that's bothered me about Broly for a long time now. The hair color issue.

! How did you figure out Female Broly's singular and only purpose?!? But really I like to imagine that Toei never wanted her to be a female, but Toriyama just did it for the lol'sVegettoEX wrote:It's less about sticking to in-universe reasoning and more desperately wanting to create something that's different and unique looking while still looking exactly like what came before it so they can sell you nostalgia while it's in the guise of a new product.

I think this may be the first time I've encountered a Mike post that's openly cynical about an element of Super I actually found kind of delightful.VegettoEX wrote:It's less about sticking to in-universe reasoning and more desperately wanting to create something that's different and unique looking while still looking exactly like what came before it so they can sell you nostalgia while it's in the guise of a new product.

(In concept, at least.)
Re: Broly: canonizing a misconception
I agree with you. And the transformation looks a lot better when yellow, and in the movies it never really looked that green.
It's like they are trying to retroactively retcon the form's color tricking us to believe it was always this green while in fact it wasn't. Or I'm colorblind.

Re: Broly: canonizing a misconception
I look at it this way: Broly is a character who outshines a fair number of (excellent) villains in the movies but is made the joke of the entire movie franchise when turned to Bio-Broly. Given the fact that canon can be loosely seen and interpreted with these films I think you'd say Broly's latter two movies' lack similar merit to the first film and if Toriyama was behind the female LSS we see, I feel like we are getting the least controversial version of a character who is widely loved. Broly and Black Goku are my favorite villains in Dragon Ball (even if Broly is more anti-hero in some respects).

Not to derail the topic entirely, but the man blew up a planet while it's inhabitants watched helplessly and literally called himself the devil. He's not comparable to Wolverine on a bad day, bub.Shad73 wrote:even if Broly is more anti-hero in some respects.
I used to ride that "mind control theory" too, but ever since the games kept running with the Diet Mountain Dew flavor of hair (for the sake of... uniqueness? They kept all of his attacks green too, so maybe they just really wanted him to be green), I just gave up. When Super Saiyan 3 Broly happened it was basically official: Broly is the maximum marketing warrior. Consistency doesn't matter. He's just Broly. He screams and greens all over everybody.
The fact that we get a NEW CHARACTER with his likeness actually excites me. I'm hoping her backstory is something much more carefully crafted and that she'll become a fantastic addition to the cast... instead of a one-off "girl Broly." I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, though.
If they somehow work a "Kakarotto" chant into her script, that would be hilarious and awful at the same time.

Lol, don't worry, I wasn't going with the mind-control theory. My definition of 'anti-hero' in this case would've more or less been that he is simply exacting primal humanoid fury, so his actions are proto-good/evil.Lunaar wrote:Not to derail the topic entirely, but the man blew up a planet while it's inhabitants watched helplessly and literally called himself the devil. Toei can persuade what he writes about considering the Future Trunks arc started with a suggestion. Also it coincides with the dragonball room understanding Broly's popularity in the west.TheMikado wrote:What if... Toriyama was the one who WANTED Broly. Re: Broly: canonizing a misconception
Broly's hair is probably green in the games to make him more distinctive, though I feel he's already distinctive enough. Nobody's as ripped as he is and nobody else loses their irises when they go SSJ.
