Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Bang Zoom Dub Official Discussion Thread
My opinion about this dub:
Best voices:
Mr. Satan
Buu
Whis
Vegeta
Trunks
Videl
Worse voices:
Goten (It's the same voice I do when I describe an annoying person)
Beerus (Too old and it is going going to sound awkward once Beerus has his funny moments. Unless the voice actor prove me wrong in the future)
Dialogues:
They still sound too wooden. At some points the Japanese version is translated accurately, to the point of making the dialogues sound weird (like fandubbers on youtube who use japanese subtitles to make their videos) but there are also moments they just say their own stuff and ignore the original dialogues (like Roshi's debts etc). Ooooh Roshi's voice was also funny.
The actors:
I feel that the cast has potential but lacks direction. I hear mispronunciations of many names from some actors, who before had no issue. (Goku keeps mispronunciating "Hercule" but at some points he says it just fine)
I don't know if the cast is experienced in dubbing or if these people are well-known in the dubbing industry but they need a little bit more time to become the characters.
I can't say that I am a fan of this dub but also I don't think I will ignore it yet. Some voice actors (especially Vegeta and Whis) sound great and if their dialogues are adapted better, they will be able to produce quality material.
In comparison to funimation....I have to admit that at least for now there is no comparison. Funimation is far superior with the dialogues and the actors sound natural and at some points better than the original (it makes sense since they have more experience).
Oh also to make it clear, I didn't grew up with any of the dubs. At my early 20s I watched the ocean dub and then funimation's. No nostalgia here (well maybe a little bit for the superior big Green dub)

Ok, so I'm going to pose another question. Who could you all see as being Future Trunks' VA? Personally, I feel like Max Mittleman would be a great fit. I'm not sure if he is Union-only, but if he isn't I'd place money on him.

He is not. Still does plenty of non union work, One Punch Man being the most obvious.ProjectAlpha22 wrote:Ok, so I'm going to pose another question. Who could you all see as being Future Trunks' VA? Welcome to the forum, Erika! Love your voice for Videl.
I could see Ben Diskin or Yuri Lowenthal fitting Trunks pretty well.ProjectAlpha22 wrote:Ok, so I'm going to pose another question. Who could you all see as being Future Trunks' VA? Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Bang Zoom Dub Official Discussion Thread
Little late to the party, but it was very interesting to see all the varied opinions of the dub! I've grown up watching the Funimation, Ocean/Westwood, and Blue Water dub, so it was cool to stumble on another dub I never thought would happen again.
Here are my opinions on the dub which I've labeled as spoilers to save space. Unfortunately I'm not a professional voice actor or director, so I don't think my criticism will be beneficial to voice actors such as Lex Lang, especially since some of it's down to personal preference for me. So far my main gripe with the first two episodes was the delivery of lines, although this could be due to the script at times.
Episode 1 (excuse my overuse of the word "but")
Narrator - Certainly caught me off guard, but I'm not too keen on this style of narration. His delivery of the line "Super Spirit Bomb of incredible power!" and "time moves slowly onward" felt very unnatural, and the slight rasp was unnecessary. I'll always have a preference for the deeper radio voice that Doc Harris and Doc Morgan provided.
Goku - I've heard quite a few voices for Goku in my time, but Lex's falls short for me. As some have already said, it lacks the childlike mannerisms in Goku's personality. However, I feel like even if he managed to nail down Goku's personality, the overall tone of the voice doesn't quite match the character I'm seeing on screen. For me, if I heard and saw Goku for the first time from this dub, I'd probably think it feels odd and doesn't fit, similar to how I felt when I heard Peter Kelamis' Goku in the Android Saga, or Jeremiah Yurk's. There's also the fact that Goku is already such a well established character, it must be quite difficult to come in and voice him for the first time. I hope that as the series goes on, Lex will be able to develop his voice with Goku as a character to find a suitable range, as well as capturing his characteristics.
Goten - I'm not sure how old Goten is in Super, so this might not be a fair argument. Something about his voice didn't seem convincing to me as a little boy. At times it sounded great like "Soaring in!" and "Hey dad!", but when he said "Dad, today is Sunday", or lines with longer dialogue, I felt like I was listening to a voice appropriate for a little girl. The delivery of lines also didn't flow well at times like when he said "but mom is always saying that we'd be fine if you.. -Well", it was very jarring and wasn't a natural way of speaking. Regardless, I'm not a fan of any of the English speaking voices for Goten.
Chichi - I'm alright with this voice for Chichi, especially since Cynthia Cranz sounded really off in Super's Funimation dub compared to her previous work. Just the delivery of some lines need a bit of work.
Beerus - I can see this voice work for Beerus, although it was quite inconsistent at times. Again, it was simply the delivery of lines that throw me off. When he was trying to pronounce the food and then stated it was too bothersome to pronounce, it didn't flow well and wasn't natural. Perhaps a quick sigh in between could have worked better. There was also times where I felt he wasn't able to maintain the characters voice when speaking, such as when he said "dish to my liking" or "your world will be shattered". I thought the way he said "I'm not finished" and "I dare say it's a bit greasier than I prefer" was fantastic, but the way he delivered the lines where he was gritting his teeth was very poor. I'd say I'm 50/50 on this voice because it has potential to be great. Right now it feels very ordinary for a character like Beerus.
Whis - This voice seemed very similar to Ian Sinclair's take, although I feel like I very slightly prefer this one. One thing I disliked about Sinclair's version was the way he handled Whis' more flamboyant scenes where he's really happy, so I hope this version will be able to capture this to my liking.
Mr. Satan - The voice seems to be inspired by Chris Rager's take. While I'm not a fan of either voices for Mr. Satan, I feel like this voice could work. I could hear some inconsistencies where he would kind of slip into Rager's voice when speaking to Buu, like when he said "but Buu, I'm a little busy right now". I'm not a fan of his goofier rendition of the voice towards the end, though.
Buu - I really dislike both Funimation and Bang Zoom's take on Buu. It's just an unnecessary high-pitch annoyance to the ears.
Videl - This was a bit of a surprise for me since I never cared for Kara Edwards' Videl in Z (I am enjoying her voice in TFC). This voice, as well as Erica Mendez's Trunks are the only two who I felt had the best performances so far.
Gohan - I'm definitely interested to hear more. I disliked Kyle Herbert's take of Gohan in Z (same as Videl, enjoying in TFC), but this voice seems to capture the more peaceful and youthful side of Gohan.
Trunks - This was a nice surprise, and the only voice I instantly recognized. I thought Erica Mendez' voice was easily the most fluent performance in the dub so far, as well as an interesting casting choice. My main issue is I wish her voice was ever so slightly deeper, and a little different from her Ryuko voice.
Bulma - The voice sounds like it could work well to me. I really disliked the way she said "I have naturally perfect skin", but that's more of an issue with the script than the voice.
Roshi & Kibito Kai - I didn't get much of an impression off their brief appearance. I'll have to see more to judge them. That actually kind of goes for most of the cast too.
Minor/Background Characters - One thing I disliked about Ocean and Funimation Z dubs was that the minor characters often sounded too wacky, over-exaggerated, unfitting, etc. However, this wasn't the case in this dub. The chef's, paparazzi, and people at the store sounded believable as humans (and aliens). The old man at the store was an exception because his character was actually goofy at times.
Episode 2
Vegeta - I was quite disappointed with this take of Vegeta. I'm not really sure how to word my thoughts without it possibly sounding racist (which is not my intent), but I felt he took the warrior aspect of the character way too literally. I also felt the grunts and yells were not very intimidating, and the family scenes felt very awkward, not in the sense that it's supposed to be, but rather the delivery of his lines. I think someone mentioned he grew up watching Sabat's version, and I can definitely see the influence of his earlier work in Z. I've always been a huge fan of Drummond's Vegeta, and it wasn't until Z Kai where I really appreciated Sabat's Vegeta, so I'm disappointed that they didn't go for a different take of the character.
King Kai - This voice was much more pleasant to the ears than Schemmel's, who I found quite annoying at times. I don't have much to say on this voice, but I think it could work out well!
Bulma - She sounded quite convincing as a mother, and I think it works quite well for the most part.
Everyone Else - Pretty much the same opinions as episode 1.
Overall it was an interesting watch. It's a shame my two favourite characters are not my favourite voices in this dub, but I'm definitely still interested to stick around and hear more! As someone else stated, this felt more like a "high quality fandub", where Trunks and Videl were the main highlights for me in this dub. I hope to see some improvements from the other VA's on their delivery of lines and having a more consistent performance. As of right now, I much prefer the Funimation dub.

I can say from meeting Erika this definitely sounds like herErikawithak wrote:Hi guys! I made an account ummm right before the dub aired I think? Because I saw people were getting all confused about my tweet about this airing in Australia, which I guess was wrong (aw!). I'm sorry! I wanted to make an account to apologize for getting too excited and getting confused about where this dub was going to be shown, because it looked like it got all of you confused too >_< My boyfriend is from Australia so I was excited thinking his family could watch it. Oops!
Anyway it took a few days to get approved here so I ended up making a tweet apologizing for the confusion instead of posting here specifically, and so I wasn't gonna post since there's no need to now, but I decided since I'm approved I might as well drop a quick thank you for being interested in our dub! I'm so happy people want to watch it~! And errr between us this thread was the only way I could find it to watch myself... Shhhh... So um, yeah, that's all! I haven't had a chance to read any posts past those made like as episode 1 was airing but I'm just glad people are watching this version too, and I hope you guys are liking itIt's an honor to be a part of Dragon Ball, even if just sort of lol
...Oh this is Erika Harlacher btw, I didn't mention who I was... Sorry ahhh it's weird that I'm posting this but I already wrote it all out... um... anyway thank you guys for the interest! Sorry for intruding! And sorry for being dumb about where this was gonna air! Uh... okay bye! (God I'm awkward even in forum posts... >_<)

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Bang Zoom Dub Official Discussion Thread
Ok guys just finished watching episode and new voices we got to hear was
krillin - This is awesome take on him and Brian Beacock's voice fits him like a perfect glove!!!
Android 18 - don't know who voiced her but it's pretty solid take, she doesn't sound that huskey as funimation or original but it works!!!
Piccolo - Ray chase is awesome, and he used exact tone i was expecting him to use (same as jason blood from justice league dark) and i like the heck out of it!!!
Yamcha - sounds similar to funimation voice but more stereotypical surfer dude style accent but its good, no complains!!
Tien - only heard him speak 1 word but he's sounds perfect as tien!!
Oolong - Sounds exactly like funimation take lol, couldn't find out diffrence at all!!
And Goku's voice was pretty great in this episode too, Energy was high compared to previous episodes so it sounded good (i think at this point lex slowly got into character)!!!! beerus and whis were good and buu sounded less annoying too... Seriously Bangzoom is doing amazing job no complaints at all from my side!!!

It's no surprise that they cut the Roshi/Oolong scene down.

I really like Krillin and all the other new voices in this episode were pretty solid.
The Oracle Fish being referred to as male (and I'm pretty sure voiced by a man) feels odd though, has its gender actually been confirmed? Nakagawa and Rial's performances always made me think it was female.

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Bang Zoom Dub Official Discussion Thread
It is so surreal to be hearing a Kaio that's actually good. Also, I'm pretty sure he said 'Shenlong', right? I don't think I'm hearing things. Speaking of Japanese things, I was happy hear 'Oracle Fish' was used consistently whereas Funi used both Seer and Oracle Fish.
Can't say I'm feeling #18 - she sounds a little too human. I totally get that at this point in the series she's essentially 'normal', but I've always felt - at least in Japanese - that she was still much more stoic, for lack of a better term.
Kuririn's fine, I guess. I don't really have any strong feelings there, but nothing was particularly offensive. I can't say the same for Yamcha. That was just... not good.
On the subject of voices we've heard in the past: Goku's sounding a little better. I initially liked Beerus, but I've not been feeling him now that I've heard the extent of his range (it's not very good). Whis has grown on me a lot and I might actually prefer this voice - at least tonally - to Ian Sinclair's.
I doubt we'll ever see a home release of this dub, but I really hope it gets one since these cappers are totally incompetent. There's a lot of potential here to create an 'ultimate dub'. I don't want another Westwood situation where I'm forced to relive it through TV captures forever.

Over in the U.S? If so yeah they do, HxH for example started in April I think and the first set of episode were available in October to buy on home video. Unfortunately the release schedule between when a show airs and when it gets released on home video seems random for every show for eg OPM finished ages ago but a home video release hasn't been listed yet as far as I am aware.hulkedoutdude wrote:No they don't release dvd's of any anime here in India (don't know about other regions), does toonami exclusive dubs (OPM,HxH and many others) ever get blu-ray or dvd releases?Baggie_Saiyan wrote:Do they release DVD's in Asia? Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Bang Zoom Dub Official Discussion Thread
Then i think this might get dvd release soon too, seriously the regions which dbs dub airing current won't even generate 10% of view which US alone gets!!! I don't think that would be enough to make profit out after producing it... So i thought they might release home video!!!Baggie_Saiyan wrote:Over in the U.S? If so yeah they do, HxH for example started in April I think and the first set of episode were available in October to buy on home video. Unfortunately the release schedule between when a show airs and when it gets released on home video seems random for every show for eg OPM finished ages ago but a home video release hasn't been listed yet as far as I am aware.hulkedoutdude wrote:No they don't release dvd's of any anime here in India (don't know about other regions), does toonami exclusive dubs (OPM,HxH and many others) ever get blu-ray or dvd releases?Baggie_Saiyan wrote: Do they release DVD's in Asia? I figured this is only for tv and they're be no uncut dub.

I still think the script is letting down the performances so far. I noticed some speedy line reads near the beginning that forced me to rewind in order to understand what was being said, in particular was the line from Whis saying; "I'd wager we have limited edition candies in the fridge" as well as Beerus response of "limited editions!?". Both reads were too fast and incomprehensible on first viewing. I don't blame the actors for that though, I think the script was just a little more verbose there than it needed to be to fit the mouth flaps, I'm surprised the director didn't catch that during recording.
I think I prefer Funimation's Whis for this episode. Ian Sinclair's slightly deeper pitch helps give him a bit more authority in the scenes with Beerus.
Still not a fan of the Elder Kai's voice. Almost sounds like a female VA at times.
Michael McConnohie's got the wise part of King Kai down but something about his comedic delivery seems off, the jokes didn't really come across very well and I think it's mainly the fault of the script. You can tell the dialogue's not flowing as naturally as it could be. Goku's showing signs of improvement here though, I loved his delivery of "I'm such a dead maaan!, today is Bulma's birthday party and I completely forgooot!". Quite funny and sounded in character for Goku.
Loved the Oracle fish's voice, works much better than Funimation's and funnier sounding too. Also really liked hearing a bit more of Beerus' evil side here, when he threatened the fish he sounded very convincing. I'm looking forward to hearing him in later episodes.
Cool that we got to hear a bit of Goku's yelling in the flashback. Hoping he can do better during actual fight scenes, fingers crossed.
Krillin doesn't sound that far off from Sonny Strait, I can only guess they were going for another similar casting here. I do like that this voice is smoother than Strait's Krillin. Android 18 sounds closer to Colleen Clinkenbeard's version. It's much younger sounding and more feminine than Meredith McCoy which is nice. Can't say I'm a fan of the delivery though, sounds a bit overly emotional at times.
Wow, Yamcha's voice is pretty much a copy of Sabat's, he's even got the same surfer accent going. From the little I heard of Tien and Oolong they also seem to be matches of Funimation's voices. Disappointing.
Aaand Piccolo sounds like Sabat too... I guess I can't be too surprised given Kaiji Tang's Vegeta but I was hoping for something more unique than this. It's unfortunately a very dry, dull and generic voice... McNeil is still King.
Still getting used to Wendee Lee's Bulma but she did really well in this episode.
It seems this dub is using "Ki" as opposed to calling it energy, very interesting.

I'm enjoying watching the dub just as a different English taste (and take) than what we normally get. And it's very interesting to hear them use terms like 'ki', and 'god', while even our uncut dub from FUNimation prefers 'deity'.
Kinda makes me wish we could get an Ocean dub of Super as well. heh
Lex, Erika, thank you for dropping by to spend some time with us. Fans of the American voice acting community are certainly getting a kick out of having two English dubs to check out. And quite interesting that Wendee Lee was cast as Bulma, as she was actually the very first English voice of Bulma for the short-lived Harmony Gold dub of the original Dragon Ball way back in 1989.
