Gohan returned to training so he could protect his family, why wouldn't he take part in a tournament where his entire universe's existence is on the line?

That would make sense if the consequences are said upfront but the synopsis implies not unless it's just being ambiguous for the audience sake.

Piccolo was always first choice he and Goku was just willing to let Gohan participate in the tournament if he wanted to.

I am going to say that Gohan is going to be the last recruited as he really does nit want to fight.

They did this family protection stuff with Gohan and it turned into nothing so why will Krillin be any different.

I've seen a video, Cabba makes that comment against the possessed Broly so he could be referring to the possessed ki.

No, Cabba says that he never felt such a tormented Ki before. Just that. He doesn't recognize anything. That last part is false.
