What happened to Zamasu?

Well, no, not exactly. Zamasu one year into his own future hasn't become Black yet because he only becomes Black that one year later. The one year period between the activation of the Super DBs is a period where nothing happens.

I think I need to reason this one out:

Events from Zamasu's perspective:

He kills Gowasu, steals the Potara and time ring, jumps forward one year, gathers the Dragon Balls, obtains Goku's body, then kills him on Earth before leaving for a parallel timeline.

Events from an omniscient historical perspective:

Zamasu kills Gowasu, steals the Potata and time ring, and then disappears for a year. A year later, he reappears to gather the Dragon Balls, makes his wish, etc., and then disappears again.

So, yeah. No overlap with two Zamasus, since as far as we know he doesn't return to his native era after using the Dragon Balls.

Wasn't arguing with you. Just had to get a handle on how that all worked out. I guess saying he "replaces" his future self in this case is more or less correct; but it's due to the circumstances rather than a mechanic of the time ring. If he'd gone back to the past after his wish and chilled for another year, there'd be a brief overlap with one Zamasu hanging around in the Kaioshin realm, and another gathering the SDBs.

Yeah, Zamasu doesn't exist anywhere at all, not in his timeline or any other, for an entire year. Time is weird. Nut I guess if you stopped time at the exact moment Goku teleports, for instance, you wouldn't be able to find him anywhere at all, either.

That stopped being weird the moment you think how this series has confirmed the universe has multiple languages, yet the aliens still use Japanese as the universal language despite the fact that the Earthlings can speak it even though they've never had any interaction with extraterrestrials.

You could hand wave an explanation by stating by making that alien's crashlanded on the planet and taught the human's the main galactic language. Or prehaps a long time ago a bunch of alien's picked up some human's and taught the others the language, or something. I really don't know.
