Y'know, that always struck me as weird. Why'd they make those years so far in the past, and not in the future. And if it was an alternative universe type thing, why'd they have AD after them?

It was the late 700's I belive, and yes, the dates ended in A.D.

Journey to the West was written in the 1500s, but doesn't tell exactly when the story takes place.

As you mentioned, it's an alternate universe. "AD" might stand for something totally different from "Anno Domini". Maybe it's referencing the creation of the Dragon Balls? Or possibly the death of the previous god?
