Re: "Dragon Ball Super" FUNimation Dub Official Discussion Thread
Except when you're talking about balancing Goku's personality out a bit by them changing a line to, "I wanna train to still be able to protect you guys as well as be the strongest" (Paraphrasing, but you get the point). Then stop the train because SOMEONE here is triggered by a slight line change.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

I wonder if FUNimation will try change Goku's moronic and selfish tone into a somewhat "hero" again. Not what I would like to see personally, but would be somewhat interesting.Scsigs wrote:Except when you're talking about balancing Goku's personality out a bit by them changing a line to, "I wanna train to still be able to protect you guys as well as be the strongest"

From what I've see of both Kai, the last 2 movies, & this series, that's not oo much the case. They're keeping it fairly within his original characterization.Noah wrote:I wonder if FUNimation will try change Goku's moronic and selfish tone into a somewhat "hero" again. I don't know about them, more of Sean Schemmel blowing a gasket at how Goku's characterization has been exaggerated by Toei. Yeah, Goku's a bit selfish in his quest to become the strongest he can be, but he's not as Super's portraying him. The series is getting near DBZ Abridged levels, & that series purposely ramps up Goku's selfishness for the sake of comedy.Noah wrote:I can expect they having a hard time with Super!Goku characterization later on, but I hope notScsigs wrote:From what I've see of both Kai, the last 2 movies, & this series, that's not oo much the case. If BlazBlue is anything to go by, I wouldn't mind if Michelle Ruff doubled her voice work to dub him, too.Hellspawn28 wrote:I wonder who should voice Zeno? Brina Palencia seems like a good choice for the role if you ask me.

I for one would be more than okay if Funi tweaked some of the worse lines. Especially the kiss scene, because that's so intetionally vague and misleadingNoah wrote:I can expect they having a hard time with Super!Goku characterization later on, but I hope notScsigs wrote:From what I've see of both Kai, the last 2 movies, & this series, that's not oo much the case. It's actually pretty hard to make Goku "less dumb" since most of his "dumb" moments draw reactions from other characters. They've pretty 1:1 with all his selfish/"dumb" stuff so far.

Wow I forgot how terrible the fight was between Goku vs beerus but Goku vs base frieza is way worse

Being a "purist", I don't really care at all. I've already reached the point where I would always opt for the original JPN version with English subtitled if I have the choice. And not having a choice is extremely unlikely since now I can easily watch DB subbed legally or heck I can even watch it for free if I wanted to...Cure Dragon 255 wrote:But then purists would flame them from here to heaven.
I have no reason to watch the Dub at this point other than to cringe at the dub changes and try and spot any misconceptions before they spread.

Schemmel has my blessing to make Goku's character less annoying in Super

Wow, thank you. You are really open minded. I really do mean it. Most purists arent understanding like you. I mean, a dub by design is made for those who havent seen the original and or dont like the original. A dub is meant to introduce new people, its not made for those who are too in love with the original and watched a million times already. You understand that and you are awesome for that.DBZ Macky wrote:Being a "purist", I don't really care at all. Not that I say go buck wild with changes. A dub should still aim to be true to the authors original intent while also appealing to new audiences.

I guess I'll share a bit of my opinion too:
I think It's pretty hard to make a 100% accurate dub anyways, so if you can draw in more fans by changing some dialogue (which seems like a stretch when I put it that way), then more power to you, as long as you don't completely butcher the character and defining traits of someone like, say, Goku.
I can understand some alterations with the Goku & Freeza comparison from episode 5, though it does affect me a little bit. Likewise, changing "Some time has passed since" to "A few months have passed" doesn't matter much either, though it includes the risk of inconsistency.
From Z's dub, I really hated the each Kaioshin being 1,000x stronger than Freeza stuff because it caused big misconceptions about power levels, something that would, again, affect me negatively. But I can completely understand that your average viewer won't give a shit about battle powers anyways, and neither does FUNimation.
The dub has come a far way, and I can actually enjoy it a bit now, but that doesn't change the fact that the most "hardcore" of fans are those who have watched the original, or are at least aware of the important dub-changes.

And that is where the problem lies. That is wrong attitude to have, if you have no reason to watch the dub as you have stated then you have no reason, watching it because you want to "cringe at changes" is not a very good reason, some sub fans have genuine interest in the dub but if you're only interest is to cringe at changes then that is poor form. Like users who haven't commented on the dub at all and all of sudden come and been like "Sean's SS3" sucks. What is the point like what are people achieving by doing that? It seems people want some elements of the dub to be bad so they can complain and feel good about it, I honestly believe that.DBZ Macky wrote:Being a "purist", I don't really care at all. Re: "Dragon Ball Super" FUNimation Dub Official Discussion Thread
Slight detour here, but then there are the sub fans that have little to absolutely no interest in the dub that genuinely see the dub as something either unneeded, or something that shouldn't exist. I don't know if you saw the guy who, literally, called anime dubbing "cultural appropriation," despite that not even remotely being what the definition of that phrase is, but that's a person who, clearly, is very salty towards anime dubs in general for some reason & can't understand why people like them & it makes you wonder why they came to the forum where fans of the dubs come to talk about them, only to use a buzzphrase like that to describe anime dubbing, trying to get people to turn on the dubs rather than just not come here in the first place. I don't go to sub forums saying "the sub sucks," because I don't believe that. I respect the original voice cast & the fans of that version, as long as we can have a good discussion on the material.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:And that is where the problem lies. Plus, I'd be flamed to hell & back for even remotely trying to say such a thing from sub fans, plus maybe banned, or punished in some way for trying to derail the discussion. I've already been reported by some oversensitive dude for saying shit he found offensive on this forum, even though that wasn't the intent of what I said, nor was he focusing on the point of what I was trying to say, but that's besides the point.
Those kinds of things take away & distract from the overall discussion of what's trying to be said. Realistically, a dub forum should only be browsed by people legitimately interested in the dubs. The subs are always there for those who like watching the shows in their original format, but the dub is for those who want to watch the show in their native language with good voice acting & a great translation/scripting. We can discuss/debate changes & castings to hell & back for all eternity, but if your purpose is to derail conversation, then why are you here?

Its huzaifa ahmed. He was the one who said that dubbing is cultural appropiation.
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" FUNimation Dub Official Discussion Thread
Yes. I don't get the point of even trying to do that because, as I explained to him, it doesn't fall under the definition of the term, as it's not stealing from one culture for the enhancement of another, it's releasing something from one country to another for entertainment purposes. If anime dubbing were cultural appropriation, then all forms of dubbing would be, not just the dubbing for anime.Cure Dragon 255 wrote:Its huzaifa ahmed.
