What's your favorite DBS "filler" so far?

Post by Gig » Tue Feb 07, 2017 10:20 am

Hello everybody!
What's your favorite DBS "filler" so far?
If you wish, you can also mention your least favorite one.

Important notes:
- Technically, DBS anime does not have real "filler" episodes because it does not have to "wait" for the manga. I just use "filler" word for simplicity. I mean episodes which are not actually part of a major arc, that do not make the plot of a saga really advance... Self-conclusive stories. I hope you get what I mean. I'm not considering simply "slow" episodes which are part of a major saga but seem "dragged out" too much (like some early episodes, or maybe even episode 77, which may be a bit slow but are part of the story of the arc).
- I'm listing fillers as one even if they consist of two or three episodes.
- I'm using my own names for the fillers. Because yes.
- "So far" means "at the moment of this writing". At the moment latest episode is 77.
- I may forget something. Unfortunately, the forum does not allow to update a post after a short time, so I may not be able to add the missing entry to this post.

Let's recap the "filler" episodes so far:

- Mr Satan VS Cat Aliens (Episode 15).
- Goku VS Monaka-Beerus (Episode 42).
- Goku loses ki control and Pan disappears (Episode 43).
- Planet Pot-au-feu: Superhuman Water & Copy-Vegeta (Episodes 44-45-46).
(Note: I often consider episodes from 42 to 46 as "Monaka Arc"... but in this case I splitted them down to individual stories).
- Goku tries to use Dragon Balls, but everyone want their own wish granted (Episode 68)
- Vegeta & Goku VS Arale -Dr Slump- (Episode 69)
- U6 VS U7 Baseball match (Episode 70)
- Hit hired to kill Goku (Episodes 71-72)
- Great Saiyaman movie & alien Watagash (Episodes 73-74)
- Goku VS Saiyaman; Goku and Krilin trained by Roshi, facing old enemies (Episodes 75-76)

I'm unsure if these may be considered "filler" with the above criteria... they are partially auto-conclusive, but there is some plot advance, but the big bad of the arc (Frieza) has not been resurrected yet:
- Krilin tests Goku's strenght, Vegeta becomes Whis' disciple (Episode 16).
- Pan is born, Goku decides to train with Whis, too (Episode 17).
- Vegeta and Goku training with Whis (Episode 18).
Maybe these three may simply be considered as "slow plot advance" episodes of the RoF arc... but choose yourself. Giving them a quick look, I think they are OK for this list.

"Honorable mentions" for the manga, for the funny "Mario Kart" scene (middle of Chapter 17) and (but I don't know if to consider it "filler") the extended Future Trunks-Dabra fight (beginning of Chapter 16).

My favorite? I'm not sure, I have to admit... maybe the Baseball one... I think it may have been even better if they made it two-part.

UPDATE: It looks like the forum still allows me to edit this post. Maybe the very first post of a thread is never auto-locked? If it's so, that's a very good feature! :D

So, I can add this: someone of you mentioned Episode 2... so I thought about it again and I think that also these initial episodes may be more or less considered "filler" with the above criteria, if you wish, due to having some "self-containing" events which were not in BoG movie (although Beerus is already shown destroying planets, so they are also part of the main arc plot).
- Goten and Trunks fight a giant snake; Goku farms and then goes to Kaio after getting money from Mr Satan. (Episode 1)
- Bulma's family on holidays, up to when Vegeta has enough and flies away from the crowd, returning to his loved training. (Episode 2)

PS: in the manga, also Goku and Vegeta training at Whis at the beginning of Chapter 5 wasn't bad... but I don't know if to consider that a "filler".

I don't have any, to be honest. Unfortunately all Dragon Ball Super fillers are boring and they don't have any particular good content. But if I have to choose one... Hum... Maybe the Kart race thing since I actually drove it once a couple of years ago and it was awesome. :)

It's a tie for me.

While the Watagash storyline finally gave Gohan something useful to do (it's not his fault the authors won't let him do anything fun), the Krillin & Goku training session was a real nostalgia trip for me. The training with Roshi in Dragon Ball was my favorite part of the entire series and this short intermission was really respectful to that.

#75. Not only my favorite in DBS, it is my favorite filler in all of Dragon Ball. It is that good. Hell, I think it is my favorite episode in all of DBS.

It had some of the best storyboarding and direction the franchise has ever seen by the very talented Nakamura Ryouta. Amazing backgrounds. The Gokuu Gohan fight got good action animation. There were also nice character moments for both Kuririn and Gokuu. If only it had Kikuchi Shunsuke music it would've been perfect cause music was the only weak point of it.

#16, #71-72 were also good, but #75 is my absolute favorite. No contest.

As a huge fan of these little side episodes we get between arcs, it's very difficult for me to choose. The Arale-chan and Baseball episodes are obviously top tier content - there's so much fun packed into every scene, I couldn't help but grin through it all. Vegeta admitting that he needs to apply gag tactics to beat Arale-chan? Yamcha saves the day and ends up in the exact meme pose we're all familiar with? This amount of subtle self-awareness is incredible and if kept in decent, bite-sized moments - they elevate the show in ways Z/GT could never do. That being said: the day we get an "Over 9000" joke in Super is the day I declare the franchise has collapsed in on itself.

Another favorite of mine is Episode 15. The Cat Aliens episode not only had a hilarious premise and hysterical visuals (Super Sai-tan will go down in history), but everything was delivered with such charm. You could tell they had fun with this episode, after what felt like it had been forever since we could feel like the show caught it's breath and flexed it's qualities.

Goku faking Satan's punch, picking up his tractor and flying away will never not make me laugh.

Pretty much every episode between the Zamasu arc and the Universe Survival arc, with the exception of the first and last ones, have been great, but the best has to be Mr Satan's episode. It's probably the funniest episode in all of Dragon Ball.

The Baseball episode.

The Hit filler was entertaining too but was let down by a shoddy ending.

Super's fillers are some of the best in the franchise history, I don't see how you can say they don't have good content. Almost all of them explore a different character, a funny gag, or have something of interest happening.

It's really tough to choose. Most of them have been pretty damn good. But If I had to pick one I guess I'd say the episode where Goku loses his powers and spends the day with Pan. At the EoZ I really loved the relationship between Goku and Pan. So seeing Goku just hanging out with his granddaughter was really heartwarming especially when pan got lost and he didn't know what to do.

I havent really thought of a favorite filler ep, none tbh, it was a chore watching them, at least some had decent animations, like ep 75, that Goku V Gohan and Goku with that turtle costume V Krillin was epic

Together with the classic driving episode of DBZ, episode 42 Goku vs Fake Monaka is my favourite filler episode that this franchise ever had.
The baseball episode is the runner-up.

As for filler arc, Hit arc takes the cake.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I'm going to start with the bad stuff here.

The Potaufeu stuff was awful. The only way to describe it is that it's super "filler-y" in a bad way, like the fake Namek stuff was super "filler-y". It just felt like bad filler, and a contrived way to bring about another fight between Goku and "Vegeta" without any consequences. It seems like Toei have learnt a lesson from this though, since they went with character-focused stories for the next gap between arcs and I feel this works much better. "Serious" filler arcs never work in Dragon Ball for me. I can't take seriously their attempts to take themselves seriously, and they fall flat even if there were some good ideas there.

Goku VS Monaka-Beerus (42) and the wish episode (68) were okay as filler as if they had to be there. I enjoyed the episodes, but it gets annoying that Beerus and Whis are showing up constantly for individual filler episodes, and if I were to drop a couple it would be these.

Everything else: amazing. Super has been great for these episodes, and these episodes have been great for Super. They aren't just entertaining interludes but they actually contribute something and I'm glad they exist, Super is a better show because of them.

The Arale episode and baseball episode were just fun, but they were really fun. The Pan episode and the three two-part character pieces highlight something that DBZ really could have benefited from in filler. Imagine if we'd had this kind of thing around the time Trunks first showed up and character dynamics were evolving a lot, but mostly off screen.

If anything, I think the Hit story could have done with being three episodes, or at least the second episode needed more work. This could have been great, but it falls short of Krillin story because the fight was kind of meh. Showing off cool techniques doesn't do much if the fight isn't actually good. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but if the new arc is going with some of the themes I think it is, this story is a great forshadowing of Goku's addiction to battle and lack of consideration getting dangerously out of control.

When it comes down to it, I'm always happy for Dragon Ball to do character building and world building. It works a lot better that dragging out fights (beyond the point where it stops being a plus) or things like fake Namek and Potaufeu.

Episode 2, 16, 18, 43, 70, 71 and 75. Episode 70 in particular is my favourite filler episode in all of Dragon Ball.

Really fun.
