Could Funi pull off DBZ character songs?
Do you think Funimation will ever release Dragonball Z character songs? Such as Chris Sabat belting out “Cooking Hell” or Chi Chi's voice actor doing her little karaoke song with Gohan. Do you think they could pull the songs off well and would you buy the CD's if they were released? One good thing I could say about 4kids is that they incorporated there own original character songs with there dubbed anime. For example they made there own variation of the Pokerap and to take it a step further during the Orange island saga they had a segment called “Pikachu’s Jukebox” where they featured songs like “Viridian city” or “Double trouble” based off of the anime. In the case of Double Trouble they even had Jessie and James voice actors sing the song. You can see another example of this when they released the “Music to Duel By” album for the Yugioh anime where they featured songs like “Face Up Face Down” which included Pegasus singing about his tournament.
So in other words if 4Kids can pull off character songs with there own voice actors why cant Funimation? I’m honestly surprised they haven’t attempted to make these songs be it there original creation or translations of the Japanese songs. I know I would buy the CD’s out of morbid curiosity not to mention hearing Chris Sabat’s Vegeta sing would be a laugh riot in my opinion. I apologize if I got the terminology on what type of songs these are wrong.

There actually is a clip on YouTube where Mr. Sabat uses his Vegeta voice to sing "Momma said Knock You Out" at a con. You could tell he was doing it as a joke because he didn't know some of the words (had to ask the audience).
It was funny, but he could never surpass Mr. Horikawa's Cooking Song.
I'm not sure any of the dub VA's could defeat Mr. Horikawa in singing.

Absolutely not, I will have to dig through Youtube to try and find that video though it sounds rather amusing. I have a strong feeling that they will do something like make a CD if nothing else it will have the Japanese BGM on it. They are always milking the series for all it's worth.Chuquita wrote:There actually is a clip on YouTube where Mr. Sabat uses his Vegeta voice to sing "Momma said Knock You Out" at a con. Well, he didn't exactly sing it, but this would probably give us a good idea of how these character songs would end up.

Thanks Mr.Troy, that was absolutely hilarious. I would have liked to hear him sing seriously but that voice almost seems impossible to sing in.Castor Troy wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsC4NOWQepkChuquita wrote:There actually is a clip on YouTube where Mr. Sabat uses his Vegeta voice to sing "Momma said Knock You Out" at a con. I wouldn't hold my breath for it. Aside from their Faulconer music soundtracks, the only other show in their catalogue that FUNi's made a soundtrack for is Fullmetal Alchemist. When FUNimation licenses anime, they usually don't get into releasing soundtracks or OVAs or anything that isn't the show itself. I've always wondered why they never do it, since I know there's a huge demand, but I've heard that when it comes to licensing and distributing anime soundtracks, rights can get pretty sticky. But then again, Geneon releases a soundtrack for almost every damn show they own, so I don't know.NeptuneKai wrote:I have a strong feeling that they will do something like make a CD if nothing else it will have the Japanese BGM on it. Yeah, but Musashi (Jessie) and Kojiro (James) are much different in the sense that American fans can actually picture them singing, since those two characters are always very over-the-top and they even sing in the Pokemon anime.NeptuneKai wrote:One good thing I could say about 4kids is that they incorporated there own original character songs with there dubbed anime. I think the main difference between 4KIDS' Pokemon and FUNi's DBZ is that creating character songs doesn't really go along with what FUNimation had in mind for DBZ in America. FUNi's been trying to promote the "OMG XTREME!!!" aspect of DBZ since day one, and I think they never recorded character songs with their English voice actors because that would go against what they were trying to turn the franchise into. They've always tried to give all the characters a "These guys don't have time to sing cuz they're too busy kickin' some alien bad guy ass! Oh yeah!" kind fo vibe. Nowadays, every casual American Dragon Ball fan has that same mentality and the idea of the cast singing in-character probably wouldn't really appeal to a wide audience.
I think English character songs would be fun (if not embarrassingly hilarious), but I don't think FUNi would do it because it isn't DBZ to them.
I'd love to see them release some sort of soundtrack, though, be it original music, Japanese character songs, or anything.

Pokemon was also aimed at a younger audience than DBZ so that may also have to do with it. But sounding similar to how the guys above mentioned regarding Funi's view, while I loved the original English songs made for Pokemon and Sailor Moon, I can't picture DBZ having anything other than instrumentals imo.

Box and Sonic bring up good points so kudos on you two. I suppose it would be somewhat of a stretch to have the new marketing campaign be"Dragonball Z, the fighters that kick ass and take names bring you something awesome from the inner depths of H.F.I.L....Vegeta's cooking."

Now singing in character may be not so great, but some of the English DBZ cast aren't bad singers. Vic Mignogna, Meredith McCoy, and Stephanie Nadolny have nice singing voices.Sun_Wukong wrote:Yeah same here. Man, that just gave me the mental image of Brolli singing opera. XD
Though, a "musical" episode could be entertaining.
I'm sure Stephanie Nadolny's natural singing voice is nice, but if I tried to sing in her early Gohan voice, with that thick rasp he had, I think my throat would close up and explode. She might be able to pull it off in her Goku/current Gohan voice, though.Super Sonic wrote: Vic Mignogna, Meredith McCoy, and Stephanie Nadolny have nice singing voices.
I think it would be interesting, but I'm too afraid of things like Misty's Song. And it's hard enough to scream in some of these character voices. Singing might be even harder.

Ok, I'm drifting off topic here... But I must say, that song was TERRIBLE. (Heck, they didn't even get Rachael Lillis to do it!)Ozma15 wrote:I think it would be interesting, but I'm too afraid of things like Misty's Song.
Many of 4Kids' other Pokemon character songs are great though, such as Double Trouble (Team Rocket), Two Perfect Girls (Brock) and even Song of Jigglypuff (Although, Jiggly itself was mostly backup vocals in that) and I REALLY like the dubbed versions of songs like Roketto-dan yo eien ni (Team Rocket Forever), Nyaasu no Paati (Meowth's Party) and Takeshi no Paradaisu (Brock's Paradise) that appeared in episodes.
Getting back on topic... Dub character songs for Dragonball would be interesting to say the least... I mean, despite being no Horikawa, I'm sure Sabat singing the Vegeta cooking song would be hilarious regardless of the end product. XD

With Ms. Nadolny, she sang one of the YYH endings, but I forget which one.
With the actors singing in character, I can see it more as a behind the scenes joke more than being serious.

Didn't Tiffany Volmer already sing as Bulma in the I'll Give You Romance DB ending??Sun_Wukong wrote:The thought of listening to Tiffany Volmer sing as Bulma scares me.
