You make not personally like what has been done, but that doesn't make it inherently bad.
Crushed blacks are an objectively bad thing for picture quality, there's literally no room for debate there.
Objectivity does not exist in this situation.
It's pure arrogance to claim that objectivity exists in art.
Whether people
think the filter is too much in certain places, and whether people
like or
dislike the filter period is all opinion based.
a very late reply (been busy animating a bohemoth of a short) but I must say: there may not be "objectivity" but as
Anime snob comments, there are gold standards, otherwise things like the
QUALITY van could never be called bad. or if you want live action examples, Birdemic, and The Room. You cant just say "it's art there is no bad" the filter while it may look alright to some, is very overdone and cheap. it obliterates all image quality to be had and fails to fascilitate on new colors.
That's because this isn't art anymore, this is technical. There are a lot of technical rules to follow from the rule of thirds, to the 180 degree rule. and while theyse can be broken, there has to be a strong understanding of what to break, otherwise the patch job is very noticeable. It's not arrogant to say that we're much more aware of the technical aspects behind these things than most people - seriously how many people still think Naoki tate "cant draw" , or call stills "animation", or say stuff like "MOVIE QUALITY ANIMATION" from a screenshot. Take a look at the PVs on YouTube, they're filled to the brim with that stuff, and none of the scenes in the PVs really move that much. meanwhile people in these forums discuss directors, their styles, corrections, the staff behind it all, etc.
