The 25th Tenkaichi Budokai officially takes place on May 7th, Age 774. Majin Buu is defeated and killed two days later, on May 9th, Age 774. His reincarnation into Uub can take place no earlier than May 9th, Age 774. In other words, at the earliest, Uub can be born on May 9th, Age 774.
In Chapter 519, at the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai, which officially takes place on May 7th, Age 784, he is stated to be 10 years old. This means that his tenth birthday has already passed. If we're allowing for the greatest degree of convenience, we could say that he turned 10 years old on May 7th, Age 784. The only problem is that this would require him to be born on May 7th, Age 774, two days prior to the earliest point where he could be born.
Did I miss something and this isn't actually a plothole? If it is indeed a plothole, what is your preferred in-universe explanation?
Two that popped into my head while writing this:
∙ Uub was in fact born a short time after May 9th, Age 774, but he put down his age down as 10 because he was closer to 10 than 9
∙ Babies in the Dragon World aren't born with souls, but rather they later attach to inftants a short time after their birth

Another way this can work is if they're counting years of age in a "I've been alive during this many years" way rather than a "add one year when you reach your birthdate again" way. So basically, since he's already in the 10th year since his birth year, he's counted as being ten years old even if it isn't quite his birthday yet. Aside from some oddball situations (like when people are born very early or very late in the year) counting age makes more sense this way than going by exact day of birth anyway... it's not like two days magically makes someone any different than they were before just by virtue of the birthdate coming around again, after all!
And yeah, even in real life there have been cultures where it was believed that the soul didn't enter the body until several days or a week after birth. Dragonball's universe could work this way. I'm not sure what the Buddhist take on "when body meets soul" is, but if there's a waiting period after birth in Buddhism that seems a likely answer here considering the Buddhist "we have many different hells, plus reincarnation" thing is basically how Dragonball's Hell seems to work and the filler depictions of Hell drew on a lot of Buddhist Hell ideas, too.

Ah, right! I do prefer that explanation to the others I had. I'm now curious as well what Buddhism's take is on the "soul meeting the body" thing.Pantalones wrote:Another way this can work is if they're counting years of age in a "I've been alive during this many years" way rather than a "add one year when you reach your birthdate again" way. Koreans count their years as if newborns are 1 year old, so the counting could be a cultural thing.Pantalones wrote:Another way this can work is if they're counting years of age in a "I've been alive during this many years" way rather than a "add one year when you reach your birthdate again" way. In DB incarnation seems to happen in early pregnacy if not in conception (DB: Piccolo, DBS: Pan)

Ah, yeah, I completely forgot about Super Saiyan Fetus Pan. Whoops.
(I'd say Piccolo was an unusual case though considering that Daimao somehow force-reincarnated his own soul into the egg he just spit up, complete with memories and such still intact, rather than his soul passing on normally and then going through the usual process.)
