What does Gohan call Buu at the end of episode 263?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

What does Gohan call Buu at the end of episode 263?

Post by Kak » Sun Jul 01, 2007 1:18 am

It sounds something like like "wusunoro", and the subtitles I have translate it as "retard". Is that an appropriate translation? At first I thought it was really extreme and out of place, but then I thought about it and considering how Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks react to it, it seems like it would have to translate into something extreme like that. I just found it laugh out loud funny reading it because I think of "retard" as such a childish insult that you would hear from a 12 year old, kind of like "faggot".

I know there's a few people here that are pretty knowledgeable about this stuff, what do you guys think?

What he says is "Usunoro" 「ウスノロ」 or 「薄のろ」.

I'd probably translate it as something like "dumbass", but "retard" is also appropriate, especially considering the extreme reaction.

Just to clarify, the dictionary translates it as "half-wit; fool; simpleton".

(For the manga it's found at the end of chapter 497).

I was laughing when I saw the word "retard" appear as well. "Dumbass" sounds more realistic in Dragon Ball, but let's think about this. Not only is this an extreme reaction, but Majin Buu isn't exactly the brightest thing out there. Perhaps Gohan meant to use the word "retard" because of Buu's speech/appearance?

Or maybe it was just an extreme reaction...:P

Gohan is usually mild-mannered... that's why they reacted that way. Even with Cell he was trying to be nice for a while.

This is episode 248 in the dub, right? A Whole New Gohan. If so, then he insults Buu at the end of the episode in the japanese version? In the dub, he just says "Hi, nice day".

In the Viz manga, it's "Slowpoke." Doesn't quite warrant such an extreme reaction, if you ask me.

Heh, in the danish translation, it's "You idiot".

But eh, I'd say the group is more shocked because Gohan is outclassing Buu in such an extreme manner than because of what he said.

In the Japanese version, they're all really shocked and have their mouths wide open because of the name Gohan calls Buu. Trunks says "H- he called him that!?" .

Yes, but then the episode ends... Right at the start of the next episode, before Buu, Piccolo, Goten and Trunks react at all, Gohan then asks "What's the matter booboo?", which the characters subsequently react to.

No, they're shocked because Gohan is playing with Majin-Boo, that's all. "Usunoro" isn't that "shocking" an insult in itself.

Well not according to my subtitles:
In the Japanese version, they're all really shocked and have their mouths wide open because of the name Gohan calls Buu. Trunks says "H- he called him that!?" .
That happens at the very beginning of episode 264.

I understand that. I'm just saying I disagree with your subtitles.
