Some familiar voices to appear in the new One Piece dub...

Post by _Jrinu_ » Thu Jul 05, 2007 12:37 am

Well FUNimation has officially released the voice cast list for the crew in the new One Piece dub and of course, it's complete with some of dragonball's most "beloved" English VAs.

The Cast has been announced as
Luffy: Colleen Clinkenbeard
Nami: Luci Christian
Zoro: Chris Sabat
Usopp: Sonny Strait
Sanji: Eric Vale
Chopper: Brina Palencia
Robin: Stephanie Young

Sabat to me seemed like an obvious choice for Zoro. And I'm very much looking hearing Eric Vale do Sanji.

As for Coleen Clinkenbeard... I've never been much of a FMA fan myself, but from what I have seen, I believe she usually plays a rather serious character, which seems to me like she won't fit the role of Luffy well, but I guess that remains to be seen.
There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

I don't know if this can be discussed here. However, I laughed when I found out that Chris Sabat was going to be Zoro. Now we all know that he's gonna be used for Mihawk, Lucci, Enel, Crocodile...and probably a whole bunch more.

Here's what we might expect

I KNEW he was going to end up with Zoro. Just like I knew he was going to snag Kurogane too.

Ah well...I liked his Armstrong; made me think of "Drama Coach Piccolo".

I really hope he uses his natural speaking tone for Zoro rather than a character voice. Like the one in that audio clip or the ones where he narrates commercials.

And how ironic is it that Juuachigou's VA is Luffy in Funi's Dub while Kuririn's VA is Luffy in Toei's?
It makes me want to draw the two of them in pirate gear. X3

Looks like they're cursin' in the dub. 8)

Why can't they do that in DBZ?

These voices might work! :D

Oh I see, never played that. Does she do her own thing or try to match the voice? I wonder why the change.

Robin - Stephanie Young: Odds are, you guys haven't heard her in anything. She's semi-new to the FUNimation voice cast, but from what little I've heard of her, she's VERY good, and her voice is incredible hot. Definitely a good choice for Robin.

Chopper - Brina Palencia: I expected Monica Rial, but I'm glad not, since that would've ended up being too generic. I asked Brina for a little "sample" of her Chopper voice, and it's HILARIOUS. I've got plenty of confidence in her.

Sanji - Eric Vale: I was expecting Chris Sabat, who's practically a direct translation of his Japanese voice, but if it's anything like the voices I've heard Eric do lately, I'm sure he's in good hands. Mike McFarland mentioned "NAMI-SWAAAAAN~!!" will be something like "OOOH, NAMI BABYYYYY~!" since the "-swan" won't make any sense in the US.

Ussop - Sonny Straight: Expected Greg Ayres, but had Sonny in the back of my mind, as did a lot of other people. Now that I think about it, he's perfect for the role. Krillin's hilarious, Hughes is hilarious. Makes sense, right? Mike also mentioned he's not gonna be "all over the place" like Jason Griffith's...um..."interpretation" of Ussop. Sonny can definitely handle the serious sides of his character, too.

Nami - Luci Christian: Expected, and was hoping for, Caitlin Glass, but Luci's great too. I was hoping for Luci to be Luffy, actually, since her voice for Wrath in FMA is my absolute favorite in the show. Either way, my guess is that her Nami voice will be something along the lines of Asuna from Negima!, who's also a red-head, ironically enough.

Zoro - Christopher Sabat: After hearing Kurogane, I think Chris'll do fine with Zoro. Oddly enough, I thought Eric (or Justin Cook) would be Zoro, while Chris was gonna be Sanji, but I guess this works just fine. Looks like his name will be "Zoro" on the uncut DVDs, but will remain "Zolo" on Cartoon Network for continuity's sake. Eh, I can deal with that.

Luffy - Colleen Clinkenbearg: Did NOT expect this one. At ALL. Colleen's done a good job in the roles I've heard from her. I figured it'd be something along the lines of Beat from Beat the Vandel Buster, but a couple people in FUNi say it's MUCH better than that, and she herself claims it'll be "awesome". For those've you who've only ever heard her as Hawkeye, she's most certainly got the range to play him. No matter what the case, I'm sure it'll be better than the 4Kids voice.

Other couple of things worth mentioning:

-They'll be releasing the Alabasta "summary" movie, which I was expecting actually. Now we'll get to hear what the Baroque Works will sound like with the FUNimation cast.

-The character names already changed by 4Kids (i.e. Chaser, Trace, etc.) will remain ON TV ONLY. The DVDs will have all the correct names for everything, including Zoro. Sweet.

-Since Viz distributed the DVDs for the first couple seasons for 4Kids, FUNimation can't release those at the time, however, it's unknown if they're even allowed to DUB them or not, so we'll see how that turns out. I'm sure no matter what the case, they'll go back and redo them eventually.

I found it actually pretty funny that Sonny and Eric just so happen to be playing characters in the show, the VAs that Mike and Merry know. Chris Sabat too.

Wow, personally I think that the voice actors are quite fit for their roles, but Colleen Clinkinbeard for Luffy...eh...can't quite put my finger on it, but it just seems so out of place in a way.

After hearing Stephanie Young and Eric Vale's portrayals in Desert Punk, I have no doubt they'll do Robin and Sanji justice. Chris Sabat...much like Chuquita, I somehow KNEW he'd get the part for Zoro. I dunno, maybe it was 3 years ago when FUNi nearly had the license and Sabat was bragging he would get the role. Brina Palencia, I've only heard her in the part of Videl in Super DBZ to the best of my knowledge, so I'm not sure how she'll fare with Chopper. Colleen Clinkenbeard as Luffy...let's pray to God he doesn't turn out like that blonde Irish kid from GT, Colleen's first role at FUNi (now, pray! ). Not sure how Luci Christian will do as Nami, but Sonny oughta be a riot with Usopp. And with that, I'm glad I got my thoughts in before Mike locked this. >.>

This is generally good news, but given the midway start they're opting for, I can't say I can support it, even if I weren't boycotting FUNimation titles.

I mean I can see that they are in a bind when it comes to eps 1-143 (which if by 13 episodes per set, would make 13 sets!), but I don't care much for this half-release, jumping about rubbish.

Erm... That's 11 sets, not 13. Anyway, it's not like they have a choice regarding the whole DVD release thing. Or, someone mentioned at the AP-forums that they could try to make Viz release the first 11 sets for them, as they hold the DVD-distribution rights for that early stuff. Ah well, where the DVDs start doesn't really matter to me. I'll just buy the DVDs in the order they're released, and keep my fansubs for everything else.

I'm not worried about Luffy. I've not heard much of Colleen Clinkenbeard, but I think she did good with Zangya.

Yeah, I'm absolutely crap at maths. Oops!

You can't exactly force something like Viz to do the DVDs for you, nor is it really well.. practical?

Absolutely hilarious (in a good way). Trust me, I'm heard it. That and you should hear her in some other stuff she's done (GO WATCH BECK).

I know she's funny as Georgie on Shin Chan. And Ms. Clinkenbeard is hilarious as Maso which is the only male voice of hers I'm familiar with.
