I think Japan would pull off the looks, but they would need a decent budget. Japan is known for having bad CG most of the time. I hear that Shin Godzilla had bad CG and people felt like it look lackluster compare to the 2014 American film.

Some sort of co-production with Hollywood money & Japanese input & overall creative direction. I mean something like No More Heroes or other Platinum Games games, except in video games' case, Japan has the backbone of Nintendo & Sony's 80s-90s endeavors to be sufficient without a Western sponsor.
I think it's possible hypothetically, but it'd definitely not be suited to a "serious" take, definitely something that didnt take itself too seriously. I'm having visions of Scott Pilgrim vs the World right now.

This is essentially the same as saying "English voice actors can't do moe, they're so bad at it!". It's just the style that puts people off. It is clearly not "realistic" acting, but it's not like it's bad for what it's trying to do. It isn't as if Japanese people are magically bad actors as some sort of collective.Bullza wrote:Good god no. Their movies usually look like trash because they simply don't have the budget to produce anything worthwhile.
The Japanese actors are also infamously well known for being terrible at acting for the most part.

That's actually a musical, Sailor Moon did had live action tv show in Tokusatsu style, and it was pretty good, character driven story, based on 1st season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE-TbQF9AEs

I don't think it would be good, doesn't matter who makes it.
More faithful? Sure.
Good? I have little faith that it would work out.

With all due respect to all people who did really good job adapting Dragon Ball to live-action - it does not work for me. Dragon Ball story and world are heavily bound with characteristic Toriyama art style. Classic cel animation does the best job here.
Every live-action Dragon Ball material I watched failed to create characteristic Dragon Ball atmosphere, despite having really good special effects, costumes, well picked actors and professional quality of production.
I would rather want Japan to make some new Dragon Ball material using classic cel animation and hire Kikuchi to compose new score with the good old style + some rearrangements of the greatest original leitmotifs, if needed.
The one can dream...

To be fair every adapation has either been no budget or misses the point.
Like Dragon Ball Evolution there was no reason to miss as many points as they did

Re: Would you like to see Japan do a live-action DB feature?
I've enjoyed quite a few Japanese live action film adaptations of anime and manga, with several of them being Shonen Jump properties like Dragon Ball. So I'm willing to give a Japanese live action film a shot. My main concern for such a project though would be whether they'll manage the visuals well enough with the budget. Most of the Japanese films I've seen are much more grounded within reality, so I wonder if they could really recreate the world of Dragon Ball?
Heck, I wouldn't mind seeing another western film a few years down the line, there's plenty of lessons to be learned from how Evolution turned out and we're reaching a point where people who actually grew up with the show will be making their way into the industry as opposed to folks just wanting to cash in.

NOֱֱֱֱ!!!! The reason Dragon Ball works is because it's drawn, people won't feel attached to any flesh & blood person portraying Goku and co. on screen.

The Rurouni Kenshin live adaptations were superbly done, but I don't think such a thing is possible with Dragon Ball. Rurouni Kenshin was doable because the art style is more realistic, relatively speaking, and it's set in an actual historical era that can be accurately represented on-screen. The same can't be said for Dragon Ball, whose characters and world are far too outlandish and cartoony to be adapted well to live-action, at least imo.

With new players in the game looking to make money in the new marketplace like China, it could be possible. Use Chinese money but American/UK talent. Looks like it's going that way anyway. Outfits are looking for favourable IPs to exploit so I figure the Japanese market is somewhat untapped. Sure better than everyone wearing blond wigs and blue eyed contacts and faking they are European or American. Or screwing up things like the live Attack on Titan or Patlabor movies...

Well most of DBE's box office gross came from China since Fox mostly market that movie in China. Chow Yun-Fat was pick as Roshi because he is a big name actor in China from what I was told.

It would need a massive budget, and a director and writer with a love for the franchise, or at least one who is willing to do their research and be respectful of the source material.
