Are they using all of their space?

Post by Anonymous Friend » Tue Jul 10, 2007 6:42 pm

With all the talk about space being wasted with characters and versions of characters that we don't need/want, I have a couple of questions for those who may have the answers.

How much space is on a Playstation 2's game disc? How much space have been used by the previous Playstation 2 Dragonball games? And for the sake of comparison, how much space is used for other games on the system?

I know I'm probably using the wrong terms or focusing at the wrong thing here (if I am please include the proper ones in your response), but what I'm trying to see here is if the development teams are giving us the best possible product in terms of what they're putting into the finished package.

It seems to me that they're aiming to make the Sparking series a franchise filled with characters, and that's all fine and well. But they seem to be missing many of the ones that most people seem to be requesting the most, as well as wanted features. And I want to know: Are they just not able to, or are they choosing not to?

Some answers for you:

A normal PS2 DVD disc has 4.7 Gigabytes. Budokai 3 Greatest Hits used 4.33 Gigabytes, and Sparking! NEO used 2.79 Gigs.

Other games I have: Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix uses 4.03 gigs, Dragon Quest VIII uses 3.89 gigs, and Resident Evil 4 uses 4.13.

So, They wasted TOO much storage for Sparking! NEO.

Edit:

And yeah, they should have done at least that to take advantage of the space. Compared to other games, Sparking! NEO did not take advantage of the DVD disc.

Can they use the dual layer discs for games? Cause those hold like 8.7 gigs, right?

As far as I know "God of War II" is one of the few PS2 games that uses dual-layered DVDs. But that's a bad sign if Spike got the hold of the idea using dual-layer because they'll probably stuff a thousand other characters that play the same instead of concentrating in other fields such as re-animating cut scenes and tweaking and expanding the game mechanic by a whole lot. I haven't played God of War II, but I bet there's a really good reason that they used a dual-layered DVD.

That helps cement my love for the Superiority of Budokai 3 over all other DBZ games save Super DBZ, though I'm guessing Super only used 3 gigs of the disc it was on. Maybe less.

I believe the first Xenosaga used a dual-layer disc (II and III used two discs, like KHII). But really, some of the best games are crammed into some pretty small spaces. ICO and RAD, two of my favorite PS2 titles, are on CD-ROM, not even DVDs.

But yeah, I'm figuring B3 used up so much space because the graphics were more detailed, the audio was better quality, all of those voice clips in the memories section, the three FMVs instead of only one, etc...

Does anyone happen to know how much space games with really high playable character lists like the recent Raw vs Smackdown or Def Jam Vendeta uses. These games have dozens and dozens of characters the are each pretty unique and also have pretty extensive creator options.

I think Super DBZ did only use 1 giga or even less than that.

Although not incredibly recent, Kido Senshi Gundam SEED: Rengo vs. ZAFT included fifty-ish playable mobile suits with the game covering 3.22 GB of the DVD disc. Despite the high character count, however, the actual gameplay is by no means complicated.

Understandable considering the lack of cutscenes and excessive characters.

Yah, there are very few ps2 games that are dual layered.
