Playing imports on PS2 slimline.
This topic was probably already done but I am interested in buying some of the Japanese versions of the DBZ games, so I need some help on what to get to make them playable on a PS2 slimline. I've heard people talking about this swapmagic thing and I looked it upand there's all these different versions. Does anyone know which one I need for a slim model and maybe tell me the basics of how it works and if it's harmful to the system? Thanks.

Yay! Something I'm knowledgeable in!
Well, the most recent version of SwapMagic (to the best of my knowledge, and the one I use) is 3.6. You can order that where I did, at TheGiantStore.
Now if you're using a slimline, you will have to void your warranty to be able to use SwapMagic. Before you can even get started, you need to do something that's referred to as, "The tape and tissue method". This involves opening your PS2, taping down a switch that reads that the tray is closed, and putting a wad of tissue on another by the disc tray.
A guide to this can be found here.
Now for using SwapMagic, how it works is you place it in like any other PS2 disc, and then wait for it to load. When it reaches this screen:

you open your PS2 via the eject button, throw in your import title, close the tray, and then hit X over the highlighted 'Load Program' option.
That's pretty much all there is to it. If you have any more questions about it, lemme know ^^;

Awesome, thanks a lot. The only thing that makes me a little nervous is opening up the system. I'm just afraid of breaking something...but it doesn't seem too difficult.
Edit: Actually I do have another question. Does the link you posted go to the exact one I need, because there are different ones you can choose...?

anyway I heard that there are those things called "magic keys" which are 3 pieces of metal that you put in the ps2 to evade the sensors. So there is no need to open it at all (I haven't tried myself...)
I don't know exactly how they work but I found a site that explains its installation:

Yes, the link I posted for TheGiantStore is the exact thing you need.SonEric84 wrote:Edit: Actually I do have another question. Does the link you posted go to the exact one I need, because there are different ones you can choose...?
As for the Magic Keys, the 'Tape and tissue method' is a cost-free variant of the way they work. All you really do, is press down a switch inside the PS2 that is pressed when the case is closed, and press down a switch in the bottom right of the disc tray that also is pressed. It fools the PS2 into thinking it's closed, and allows for disc swapping.

Ah, well I actually found a place that sold the swap magic 3.8 with magic keys for free. http://www.allmodchip.com/product.php?p ... t=1&page=1 Now all I need to do is find a DBZ game for a reasonable price.
Yeah go with these ones, i have these exact metal things and they work perfectly.Darknat wrote:I don't know exactly how they work but I found a site that explains its installation:

So I got the swap magic 3.8 and magic keys in the mail yesterday. I have the keys installed as instructed by the video but the problem I am having is with the swap magic itself (at least I think so.) A menu screen comes up and it says boot disc in drive or load your own program? Then I swap the disc and put the game in (I used dragon ball z legends for PS, using the swap magic CD-rom disc.) and you have to choose from three or four different sub menus (normal, special, SMBOOT, cheat coder) then under the first two is a screen that says "PAL, Default, NTSC" I've tried selecting each one and none of them make the game work, all I get is a black screen. Anyone know why? Oh, I also noticed at the bottom of the main menu screen it says "load bigger TOC disc" or something to that effect. (I don't have internet at home right now, so I don't have the screen in front of me....oi.) Anyway...help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ah crap, I was under the impression you could play PS1 imports on it as well. I suppose that's okay though because I have a gamehunter for my PS1. I thought PS2 used DVDs...how do you get a PS2 format CD?Lord Moonstone wrote:The problem, SonEric84, is that SwapMagic does NOT work with Playstation 1 discs. When it says CD version, it means CD format PS2 discs (blue-bottom).
Sorry to say, but you'll need to use a PlayStation 1 mod to play Legends. T_T

Well, certain games are CD format for PS2. When all the data can fit on a CD, why waste a DVD?SonEric84 wrote: I thought PS2 used DVDs...how do you get a PS2 format CD?
Certain titles I know :
Robot Alchemic Drive
NHL 2002
Mad Maestro
Earth Defense Force
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Orphen: Scion of Sorcery
Looking through my game collection that's what I can name. So they exist, but are just few in number, which is why there's a seperate Swap Magic for the CD versions.

Makes sense, I just assumed since PSone games were on CD that they would also work. No big deal though. I got my first import game in the mail yesterday and it loaded up just fine.
