Which do you prefer?
In the scene where Goku goes SSJ for the first time, do you prefer the Funimation dub or the original Japanese version?

Please don't just say "The Japanese version, because it's the original" or "The English version because it's in English", post why you think it's better.
It's a tough call for me. I remember when I first saw it I knew what was going to happen. I taped that episode and must've watched it 10 times afterward when it aired on Toonami. I think the dub version is better. When Goku says "I won't let you get away with this!", you've never heard Sean Schemmel sound so pissed off. And I like the music, it sounds awesome and a little sad.
The Japanese version's great too. I love how it's dead silent after Kurirrin dies, as though it gives you time to absorb the shock of what just happened. And him screaming "GOKU!" before blowing up was much more effective. There's also this great subtlety trick where his voice distorts after saying "How dare you..."
The thing is, it uses stock music that's been heard in the series before. It has a more dreadful and ominous tone than the Funimation version. But what I like least of all is when Goku opens his mouth there's a two second delay, and when he screams, it's a much deeper version of Masako Nozawa's voice. Plus the anti-climactic "ARRRAAGGH!"
I think it's one of the few times where Funimation surpassed the original.

I'm sorry but the English version to me sounds like he's taking a dump. The English VA's tend to go overboard with the grunting.
Plus Freeza's, "Pop goes the weasel?"
What the hell?
The only part I don't like about the Japanese version is how the scream's not synched up very well.
Where is that video with all the different dubs of the scream? I think I liked the Mexican and German dubs the best.
*Edit* Yeah it was the Mexican one, definately the best scream.

The japanese one is superiour because of the following reasons:
1. The music fits a lot better, because you have to consider the fact that Freeza just MURDERED Kuririn easily.
2. Goku's voiceactor is much more convincing. Seriously, how can people call that "I won't let you get away!"-line convincing? It's one of the most forced, poorly delivered lines I've seen.

I definitely think that the Japanese one is superior here. To me, the way goku's yelling in the English dub makes it sound like he's trying to go super saiya-jin, as though he knew what he was doing.
In the Japanese version he's just really really pissed off, and the anger is pulsating through him until he finally snaps. And the way the voice changes after he transforms: Just awesome.

There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

I know I saw the option to make one somewhere. I remember because I found out it was available sometime after I'd done some sort of poll for the fandub, and I was like, "hey, where was that when I needed it?"ect5150 wrote:(OT: Can't these boards allow user created polls?)

Yeah, I saw it over at the Video Games section. It just doesn't work... because VegettoEX is just to LAZY to fix it. That's right, I said LAZY.SSj Kaboom wrote:I know I saw the option to make one somewhere. The Room 29 Production's version is where it's at.
Here's the video with the many SSJ screams in it.

Sadly, I'd have to say the English Version. This is the first time that Sean sounds pissed in the entire series, and that scream definantly trumps the one in the Japanese version where it sounds like a really deep bark, more than a scream.
And the music disappoints me in the Japanese version for this scene. No insert song, just stock music? Bah.

Both versions are good. I slightly prefer the Japanese version only because of Masako Nozawa's delivery. I don't like the fact that the JPN music only uses stock music, BUT it does make scene sound darker & ominous.
I liked the fact that Falconer actually composed an original piece for that scene in the dub. (Before that piece got recycled over & over.) I'd say if Sean Schemmel ever did a re-dub of that scene (i.e, better screaming & less forced acting), I'd probably enjoy a lot more. I'm thinking something along the lines of his SSJ3 transformation in Movie 12. Yeah, baby...
Neither scenes are particularly bad, in my opinion.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
Without reading too many other replies, and actually, I think this is the first time I've seen this scene in either of these two languages. *ducks* Got into the show late and rerun schedules were never very good to me.
It's hard, the Japanese clip has Kuririn's actual death, while the English one starts with Gohan's whimpering. Whimpering which, if present in the Japanese, was not too audible. It just seemed very intrusive--yes, Gohan loves Kuririn, yes, he's five years old and upset, but it just doesn't mesh well with the scene.
And "Pop goes the weasel," versus "How about I go for the brat [read: your five year old son] next?" There shouldn't even be a question as to which of those is better.
Masako Nozawa's performance also seems just more--bereaved. But in all fairness, she's been with Goku for several years at this point. She knows all the particulars of his and Kuririn's relationship, she knows her character better, and so she has a lot more to work with than Schemmel.
Kinda sounds like they slipped Schemmel there into that Japanese clip, though...
And at the end, the Japanese Goku just sounds more desperate... it's a barely-controlled violence sort of thing, versus the English 'All right, here's what you gotta do' kind of thing, but it got cut off, so I don't know if Schemmel picked it up in the next line.
Didn't really like the music cues in either clip. The English music barely registers in my head--I honestly can't remember it after watching that particular clip, while the Japanese music sounded intrusive near the end, with the waves and water shot.

Will have to say that the differences also factor on how the characters were done and found by that time. In Japan, Ms. Nozawa had been doing Goku for about 4-5 years by then, while Mr. Schemmel had just started doing him and was still finding the character. Also remember season 3 was a rush job. Most of the English actors found their characters during season 4 in my view.

I gotta go for the English version. Schemmel sounds very convincing with the "I won't let you get away with THIS!"; he almost sounds like he's going to cry, adding more to the scene. Bruce's music is superior as well.
The Japanese version has better dialogue for Freeza in the scene, but that's about it.
Both of them go overboard with the grunting.

"Remember to believe in magic, or I'll kill you."
Japanese. Do you hear the scream? Gives me goosebumps every time.
Also, now that I think about it, the Japanese scream sounds like Schemmel's voice
. And the Mexican scream does sound amazing, however, I still think Japanese is better simply because of the difference you hear between Goku's normal voice and the screaming voice.

Japanese, because I think the emotion and expression was better portrayed in than the English version. And I liked Freeza's quick response "NANI!?!" and how it went with his facial expression. There are other points I liked but they have been already written above.
PS: What about the Ocean Dub version?
