Drawing styles change throughout the series

Post by Aukon07 » Wed Jul 25, 2007 1:09 am

Is it just me, but did you notice throughout the series sometimes characters would be drawn differently. Like, one episodes of DBZ has their characters drawn with much detail and more shadows and sharper straight lines, while some episodes have more round lines and less details?

Some examples what I mean.

These aren't the best examples, but I hope you can see what I mean.

I noticed it in GT as well, even though they had different artists making it.

Oh, were the hell has the old thread gone? Oh well.

I think that changing the drawing styles from one of my least-favorite scenes and changing the drawing style to my favorite scene and it's crappy, it is absolutely HORRIBLE. If I had the choice to change the drawing styles to something better, I would jump at the chance, no doubt. :)

That's what I thought. At first I thought it was from GT, but it doesn't really look like the GT-era drawing style.

The source I got it from said it was an animated cel, so it's real.

That big-eyed Cell looks completely fake; or photoshopped. o_O

The fact that it is real saddens me.

It's simply a different animation team, you notice that sometimes there is really good animation, and others you're like.... "Good lord, I can draw better then that".

Sometimes the animators are simply pressed for time, so they can't linger on how the characters appear. They simply need to get the animation done by the deadline that they're given.

There's some really horribly done episodes, one of the worst ones I think is "Old Buu emerges" during the Kid Buu arc. There's a really good episode during the Majin Vegeta/ Goku fight. I forget the name, the animation is one of the best done in any episode in my opinion. I'll try to find a link...

And the vermin of the world inhabit it."

There is a HUGE thread on this a few pages back. I'm sure Desire will go dig it up and link to it within a few hours. I hope so, at least.

I've always thought that the animation style slightly changed over the time of the series. It seems like in the Buu Saga, everyone has sharper noses for some reason. :P

Well, I'm not Desire, but that doesn't mean I don't know which thread you guys are talking about. I'm pretty sure it was one of the first threads I posted in when I joined the forums .

I knew I bookmarked it for some other reason aside from the fact that I thought it was an interesting topic. The second page is especially interesting, since user Mike D (dunno if he still frequents these boards) was able to identify a good number of the different animators. Thankfully, most of the pictures are still there and haven't been replaced with the little broken icon picture.

I know there was another thread on the same topic before that that that brought the manga in for comparisons, but apparently I don't have that one bookmarked (yet)...

THE RETURN OF THE TRIANGLE CRAP GUY!!!!

I loved that thread, definitely one of the more interesting here on the forums.
Another good reason to stick with the manga.

Low grade animation is a big reason why I much prefer watching the movies. That and I can get an epic, complete story in less than an hour instead of 50-70 episodes.

I found the other other thread. Though unlike the other one, almost all of this thread's comparison screencaps are no longer viewable :(.

And just to add to this thread, I'm pretty sure there wasn't a definite rotation schedule that the animators had to adhere to, since sometimes there would be a long period of well animated episodes followed by an equally long line of crappily animated episodes.

Though in the bad animators' defense (kinda), I noticed that most of the filler with the bad animators had more interesting filler episodes than most of the filler episodes given to the better animators. Then again, I could be completely wrong on this, since I haven't watched the series in a while and I just remember thinking this when watching some filler episodes a while back.

Also, for the animation style dubbed as the "Pale Cartoony Type," I noticed that even though their overall style isn't the best, their close ups look pretty good. I distinctly remember one of the Cell Games episodes when Gohan recently turned SSJ2 that was overall crappy, but had some pretty awesome close ups of stuff like eyes and scrapes to the face.

EDIT: Is anyone aware of any other animators used in the anime aside from the six already pointed out?

Thanks for sharing the links, I enjoyed looking at the comparisons.
