"Dragon Ball Super" FUNimation Dub Official Discussion Thread
Re: "Dragon Ball Super" FUNimation Dub Official Discussion Thread
I actually like SSRose Black, he sounds like a condescending prick which seems pretty fitting if you ask me.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

I think all this proves is that voices in the dub will always be terrible for new characters where they don't have time to settle into their roles.
Unfortunately for us the dub of the Zamasu arc is likely going to be well under way soon (if it isn't already), so they won't have much time to practice

A part of me thinks that James Marsters' vocal sensibilities would be more suited to Hit than Zamasu, because of how old and low energy he is. But, that's just me.

Am I the only one who's still under the impression that the 2 Black voices we've gotten so far are them just testing the waters? Personally, his Rose voice was a step in the right direction from the normal Black voice, but still not as great as it could be. You don't need a British accent to sound like an arrogant prick, you just need the right words. While I don't hate the accent, it doesn't seem like it should be his default unless it's the same for Zamasu as well, whether it's HIS default accent as well, or in a similar situation where he gains it after a bit. I don't know. I just think a smarmy Goku voice is the right way to go, no accent required.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

Even if it is testing the waters, it's still the general direction he's going in. I mean you don't expect the finished product to sound completely different, Sean Schemmel can only do an evil Goku voice in so few ways.

This proves nothing whatsoever. They are recording with zero context, they are literally reading lines. They aren't dubbing directly from the Japanese, if anything history has proven the opposite. Beerus the exact same over-reactions happened but when it came to dubbing the actual movie Douglas had actual context to work with and was able to draw from Yamadera performance, same with Schemmel's SSG everyone was crying it was too "heroic" come the actual movie it was anything but. You are also acting like the Japanese VA didn't have time to settle, Nozawa and Miki certainly did, it wasn't until the second half of arc that they started showing their worth.precita wrote:I think all this proves is that voices in the dub will always be terrible for new characters where they don't have time to settle into their roles.

This is exactly with Ayres as Freeza too, a small clip played and everyone went crazy just like here, a few months later? Literally everyone ate their shoe.
Watch Marsters will KILL it, and so will Schemmel I can say that with 110% certainty, Sabat is a phenomenal director.
It definitely is, Sabat did say it is still works afterall. I agree it is a step in the right direction, I'd say 10 steps forward and 15 steps being the goal, they have the right idea I am sure once he hears Nozawa it'll be there.Scsigs wrote:Am I the only one who's still under the impression that the 2 Black voices we've gotten so far are them just testing the waters? As neither a fan of the dub and one of Schemmel's hardest detractors, I find his Rose voice to be pretty good, especially for a video game. Haven't heard everything, just some of the raws other people posted on YouTube, but what I heard was more than fine. Sure, adding a British accent to sound evil is kinda cliche, but that's also one thing I can see being dropped when the actual dub hits and the guy starts to feel more at home with the character.
Base Black is still horrendous, but he will probably not go in that direction anymore after the backlash it got/gets and proper context is attributed to the character.
Zamasu is early to say. He sounds a bit too deep and with his portrayal in the anime, I think that might clash with the character during some moments, but if Schemmel's voice is undercooked (when the guy has been doing DB for years), it's certain that Marster's is even more so.
It certainly isn't bad, but having foresight into how things play out later and how they're animated (to suit Miki's performance) makes it look like it will be hard to tune it the right way. Direction will be key here.
Not that I really care, I won't actually watch the show and I play XV on japanese anyway, but I think that only makes my positive two cents even more worthwhile.

You know, I sent Sabat a tweet after he talked about James Marsters some time ago. I told him since he was working with James again why not perhaps cast him as Hit in the English Dub? I too think his voice would of been good for Hit. Too bad he isn't :/

As I've stated in the Xenoverse 2 thread, there's something just off about Sean's SSJR Goku Black. It sounds very insincere and formal, and that fits for Goku Black way better than whatever the hell we got with Sean's Goku Black in his base form, but also just feels... off.

I'm pretty sure with base Black it wasn't Zamasu but actually Solid Snake that used the the Super Dragonball's to switch bodies. In a seriousness I am hoping this will be a similar situation as with Chris Ayres when we heard his first few lines.Lord Beerus wrote:As I've stated in the Xenoverse 2 thread, there's something just off about Sean's SSJR Goku Black. Hit's a run of the mil character that barely speaks and isn't in the show much, really doesn't matter who voices him tbh.DainIronfoot wrote:ConfusedPhantom wrote:A part of me thinks that James Marsters' vocal sensibilities would be more suited to Hit than Zamasu, because of how old and low energy he is. It doesn't fit him if Zamasu has an American accent.ekrolo2 wrote:I actually like SSRose Black, he sounds like a condescending prick which seems pretty fitting if you ask me.
Zamasu is terrible, too, he sounds like an announcer from the 50s.

What English dub voices do you like? I'm just talkin about DB in general. I'm asking because you seem to dislike some. Well, atleast some of FUNi's voices.Doctor. wrote: It doesn't fit him if Zamasu has an American accent.

There are plenty I like. Clarke's Cell, Ayres' Freeza, Martin's Boo, Strait's Kuririn, Vale's earlier work as Trunks, some examples.Bansho64 wrote:What English dub voices do you like? I've always felt that Sabat's modern Vegeta is just late Z-era Horikawa with less range. I don't hate it or anything, quite the opposite, but it's comparatively weak.Bansho64 wrote:Oh ok, that's great. You don't like Goku or Vegeta?Doctor. wrote: There are plenty I like. Sabat's Vegeta is fine, he has gotten more talented as time went on but his voice has gotten considerably more generic compared to his Z Boo arc days. I don't think any of the actors who have portrayed Goku thus far fit the character. Though if I had to pick a favorite, I guess Kelamis would be it, even if Schemmel is the more talented actor.Bansho64 wrote:Oh ok, that's great. More generic? I find his Z voice in Boo Saga to be generic than his Kai voice. It just screams: "I'm a big bad tough guy because I have a gruff voice!"Doctor. wrote:Sabat's Vegeta is fine, he has gotten more talented as time went on but his voice has gotten considerably more generic compared to his Z Boo arc days. I find his current voice bland, he just sounds like a normal guy, both Vegeta and Piccolo.8000 Saiyan wrote:More generic? I find his Z voice in Boo Saga to be generic than his Kai voice.
